Six outstanding teaching strategies and teaching/learning projects throughout bring this framework life.

Book Preparing for Citizenship

Download or read book Preparing for Citizenship written by William Backus Guitteau and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preparing for Citizenship: An Elementary d104book in Civics At the close of each chapter in the text, the teacher will find questions and topics for further study and investigation. The more simple investigations only should be undertaken in classes composed of the younger pupils. Care should be exercised, also, in selecting only questions of especial interest to the particular community; for example, rural schools will naturally omit many questions pertaining to urban conditions, and vice versa. As a rule, it will be best to assign one question to each pupil, or to a group of pupils, to be reported on at a future date. The teacher should suggest sources of information for pupils to make use of in their investigations. Often the parents, or older brothers and sisters, can give the necessary help; or, again, it may be advisable to consult local officials for information concerning their work. Members of the class should be encouraged to visit township, county, and municipal offices; and local officials should he invited to come before the class and describe the business of their departments. Added interest may be secured by organizing the class into a town meeting, or as a city council, State legislature, or branch of Congress. A bulletin board in the classroom for newspaper clippings pertaining to governmental affairs will prove interesting and helpful. Book The Civic Education of American Youth

Download or read book The Civic Education of American Youth written by Policy Research Project on Civic Education Policies and Practices and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civic education plays an essential role in strengthening the democratic society, preparing informed citizens, and promoting their participation in the civic life of their communities. This project explores state K-12 civic education policies and related requirements nationwide, as well as factors that shape K-12 civic education policies and practices in school districts and schools. The first two chapters of this report provide the national and state contexts for content standards in core subject areas, including civics; review state constitutional provisions and statutes that promote civic education; and examine how social studies standards, assessment, teacher certification, and other state policies build on these provisions and statutes. Recognizing the centrality of state standards, chapters 3 through 5 examine the extent to which the civics content in state standards promotes civic dispositions, civic intellectual skills, and civic knowledge, respectively. Chapters 6 through 11 examine several influences on civic education at the district level: standards; instructional materials; assessment; professional development; extracurricular and co-curricular activities; and individuals, organizations, and funding. Chapter 12 provides recommendations for developing sustainable state and school district civics commitments that ensure systematic attention to civic education in grades K-12. Key findings from the project report are included, as are extensive chapter notes, and 47 tables of data. Seven appendices contain additional information. (BT)
