Book excerpt: [résumé en français]Cette thèse est dédiée à la gestion des objets complexes, persistants et évolutifs propres aux nouvelles applications des bases de données. Nous nous intéressons plus spécialement aux bases de données pour les environnements du génie logiciel. Notre contribution concerne la modélisation de ces objets et l'évolution ainsi que intégration des schémas des bases de donnnées qui les contiennent. Nous proposons également, des mécanismes permettant l'adaptation de ces bases de données (données et programmes) aux différents types d'évolution. Nous avons d'abord défini un modèle de données générique à typage fort et englobant les concepts communément admis dans les modèles sémantiques et le paradigme objet (agrégation, groupement, héritage etc.). Ce modèle est formalisé par des types abstraits graphes. Une étude systématique de ces types abstraits nous a permis de définir un ensemble de modifications élémentaires de schémas qui sont elles-mêmes formalisées comme des opérations associées aux types graphes. Cette approche nous a permis de définir de façon rigoureuse, la gestion des impacts des modifications de schémas.Un processus d'intégration de schémas d'objets complexes a également été proposé, il se caractérise par sa phase de comparaison de schémas qui s'effectue à l'aide d'un raisonnement hypothétique. Du point de vue de la gesiton de l'impact de l'évolution de schémas sur les bases de données existantes, nous proposons un mécanismes permettant l'adaptation des instances et de sprogrammes ainsi qu"une gestion de versions de schémas. Ce mécanisme se base sur la définition, dans certains cas automatique, de fonctions de correspondance formalisées par des homorphismes. Ces fonctions peuvent en effet, être utilisées pour réaliser la conversion des instances ou pour implanter un polymorphisme ad hoc avec crcion de types. Les propositions de cette thèse ont fait l'objet d'une implantation sur une plate-forme orientée objet (smalltalk object-works)

As part of the Foundation’s multifaceted activities—which range from seminars and an advanced training initiative for French doctoral students to joint programs with international organizations an associations—FNEGE partnered with ISEOR to sponsor a series of workshops on developing high quality intervention-research. This volume is one of the results from that endeavor. Although intervention-research helps to uncover valuable insight into organizational dynamics and performance, the challenge of capturing and disseminating that insight to both academics and practitioners is entrenched in the rigor-relevance debate. While we are witnessing increased calls for “actionable knowledge,” this ideal, unfortunately, remains a rather elusive concept as critics contend either that rigorous academic research falls well-short of relevance to the practitioner world or research that proves to be valuable to practitioners falls short of the rigor expected in academic life. This volume is intended to help bridge that divide. Drawing on the FNEGE-ISEOR intervention-research workshop, the volume contains 18 chapters that explore the intervention-research process, from initial conceptualization, to implementation, to publication. Book excerpt: ‘Organizational research methods’ (ORM) are making an ontological turn by studying the nature of Being, becoming, and the meaning of existence in the world. For example, without ontology, there is no ‘ground’ and no ‘theory’ in Grounded Theory (GT). This book explores ten ways to develop fourth wave GT that is grounded and theory. 1st wave GT commits inductive fallacy inference, 2nd wave GT bandaids it with positivistic content coding. 3rd wave GT turns to social constructivism, but this leaves out the materiality and ecology of existence. The first three waves do not address falsification or verification. There is another theme. Qualitative research methods is a discipline craft, not mere science or something that automated text analysis software can displace. Quantiative narrative analysis (QDA) is one more way to colonize and marginalize indigenous ways of knowing (IWOK). Without an ontological turn, its the death of storytelling predicted by Walter Benjamin and Gertrude Stein predicted. The good news is Western Empirical Science is beginning to listen to IWOK-Native Science experiential living story method of relations not only to other humans but to other animals, plants, to living air, water, and earth in living ecosystem of an enchanted world There is a gap in the qualitative research methodology practices and comprehensive advanced approaches causing a split between practice and theory. So called Grounded Theory (inductive positivism) . Organizational Research: Storytelling in Action is about how to conduct ten kinds of ontological Research Methods and conduct their interpretative analyses, for organization studies, in an ethically answerable way. It is aimed at people who want a more ‘advanced’ treatment than available in so-called Grounded Theory or automated narrative analysis books.

Book excerpt: In May 2014, the French research laboratory ISEOR (Socio?Economic Institute for Firms and Organizations) and the University of St. Thomas co?sponsored a second conference on the application of the Socio?Economic Approach to Management (SEAM) paradigm and methodology in the United States. SEAM is a scientific approach to consultancy that focuses on uncovering the dysfunctions and hidden costs that exist in organizations, “hidden” in the sense that they are not captured by traditional accounting methods and financial analyses. Through intervention that encompasses the entire organization – what the ISEOR team refers to as the HORIVERT approach (combining horizontal and vertical intervention) – the underlying goal is to enhance organizational performance by attacking the “TFW virus,” a vestige of the early work by Frederick Taylor, Henri Fayol, and Max Weber that has sufficiently infiltrated our thinking about management and organization to the point where are falling well short of our own potential. Those familiar with Henri Savall’s and his colleague Véronique Zardet’s earlier work on the socio-economic theory of organizations will recognize their assessments of organizational dysfunctions and hidden costs – but in a different context. In their current work, the emphasis is on the tensions created by the wider environment – the idea of tetranormalization – and how those tensions shape and influence organizational life. Drawing on a wide range of examples from the news media and popular press, Savall and Zardet paint a disturbing picture of the underlying dynamics and challenges posed by a literal avalanche of standards and norms – which are often ambiguous and conflicting – that literally encompasses all that we do. Their analytic framework is composed of four “poles” – two social dimensions and two economic dimensions – that capture social norms and quality, safety and environment standards (the social dimension), and trade-related norms and accounting and financial standards (the economic dimension). Throughout the volume, Savall and Zardet’s analysis captures the myriad ways in which these dimensions interact, shaping the “rules of the game” that dictate how organizations compete and collaborate.
