Book Going For 55

Download or read book Going For 55 written by Christopher Jack and published by Polaris. This book was released on 2021-09-12 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insider’s history of the Rangers Football Club’s almost-decade-long climb back to the top of Scottish football and their fifty-fifth league title. In February 2012, Rangers faced an uncertain future and fans feared for their club as a Scottish institution was plunged into crisis. Just months later, Rangers would start out on what those supporters christened “The Journey” as they attempted to make their way back to the top of the game from the Third Division. The years that followed were amongst the most tumultuous and controversial in the club’s illustrious history as financial results became as important and noteworthy as football ones. Through it all, Rangers supporters followed near and far. In May 2021, Rangers completed their journey as Steven Gerrard’s side were crowned Premiership champions. Going for 55 tells the story of the campaign, giving insight and offering analysis into how Gerrard revolutionised the club and restored Rangers to their place at the top of Scottish football. With interviews from the money men who funded the rebuilding job, the staff and players that made the dream a reality and those in the press that saw history being made, this is a sporting tale like no other.

Book Coordination and Growth

Download or read book Coordination and Growth written by Simon Klaas Kuipers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination and Growth: Essays in Honour of Simon K. Kuipers, addresses a rich variety of coordination issues in macroeconomics. It contains detailed studies in economic policy, monetary economics, and growth theory and uses various methodologies to address the coordination issue: from a pure theoretical to an empirical econometric approach. It is stressed that modern macroeconomics should focus on coordination issues. Imperfections of various kinds are likely to lead to coordination failures, which can lead to large welfare losses. Macroeconomists should address the causes and implications of imperfections and failures. In this book attempts are made to increase our knowledge in this field. The book is a tribute to one of the leading Dutch macroeconomists, Simon K. Kuipers. Simon Kuipers shows a major interest in the theory of capital (following e.g. Harrod), growth theory (following Solow), monetary theory (following Tobin), and disequilibrium theory (following Malinvaud and Benassy). The lines of thought have in common that they use frictions to explain the functioning of a market economy. The nature of the frictions varies from pure quantity rationing, like in the Malinvaud analysis, to imperfect substitution of various capital goods (like in the vintage models or assets (in the general monetary equilibrium models proposed by Tobin). Kuipers is not only interested in pure theoretical contributions, he also stimulates econometric work in line with the Dutch tradition initiated by Tinbergen. His applied work relates to policy analysis and policy prescriptions in many fields, ranging from monetary economics to distortions in the labour market. Kuipers can be classified as a true Keynesian, although he admires neoclassical theory for its rigour and compactness. Better still, he is an eclectic economist with an open eye for the different schools of thought in macroeconomics.

Book The Changing Contract across Generations

Download or read book The Changing Contract across Generations written by Vern L. Bengtson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generational conflict has attracted considerable attention in the media and within academic circles during the past decade. At the center of this collection of papers analyzing various facets of that conflict lie complex issues of generational equity - issues that will remain important for the framing of public policy during the 1990s, What do the young and the middle-aged owe the elderly? In discharging that debt, to what extent are they able to provide for their own old age in a climate of changing notions of welfare? What light do the longer perspectives of history shed on these issues? What role do kinship, gender, and economic status play? The papers commissioned by Bengtson and Achenbaum are intended to give greater analytic rigor to current debates. The volume is interdisciplinary not only by theoretical intent but by the practical imperatives of gerontology. More than a dozen sociologists, economists, historians, demographers, and policy analysts discuss the meanings and ambiguities that are inherent in terms such as "generation," "equity," "compact," "contract," and "conflict," in order to assess how relations between the age groups seem to vary from one sociohistorical context to the next. This distinguished group of contributors raises comparative issues throughout, assessing variations in generational ties by gender, race, class, and geographic location. Several project the extent to which recent changes in the political economy, public philosophy, and demographic structure of most "modern" societies presage greater conflicts, or greater consensus, in family members' relationships and social ties.

Book Greening Business

Download or read book Greening Business written by Ian Worthington and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental protection has increasingly become a business issue at both the strategic and operational level for businesses of all sizes and across all continents. Greening Business is a comprehensive and highly contemporary analysis of the business/natural environment interface. Supported by numerous examples of current environmental practices in industry and commerce, the book examines why, when, and how businesses have responded to the growing pressures from governments, citizens, and other stakeholders to improve on their environmental performance. Focusing on the firm as the primary unit of analysis, the book examines the major drivers of corporate ecological responsiveness and critically investigates the nature and range of business responses in both theory and practice. It offers a detailed analysis of the contested business case for corporate greening, using insights from current strategy and management theory, including the resource-based view of the firm, and discusses the ways in which a firm can incorporate its concern for environmental protection into its day-to-day operations and decisions and through its strategic posture. It concludes with a discussion of the notion of the ecologically sustainable enterprise.

Book excerpt: In science, concepts such as organism, evolution and life, are used almost every day. Every scientist knows the general meaning of such concepts. At the same time, nature is complex, and for this reason, it is difficult to draw stringent lines around classes of things. Scientists therefore accept the use of so called 'working definitions' for many concepts. It is frequently advocated that working on definitions has little use for practical research. This book explores a different viewpoint, in which definitions are compared with tools. If your toolbox contains too few tools, tools that are worn down, or tools that don't fit, it becomes difficult to carry out even the most easy maintenance or repair job. Experts know: suitable tools make the work easier. The aim of this book is to examine much-used concepts in science as if these are tools in a scientific toolbox. Do the current definitions represent quality tools? To explore this question, this book uses a recently developed hierarchy theory, the operator theory, as a reference. This theory is explained in the first chapter. Whenever the analyses suggest to do so, the ScienceBites offer directions for improvement of current definitions. 'These delicious bites of science will inspire readers to devour much more scientific knowledge, and to reflect on the importance for humanity of progress in the sciences.' Prof. Dr Herman Philipse Utrecht University 'In this "golden age of biology" SCIENCEBITES provides a much needed critical reflection on its core terms' Prof. Dr Bart Gremmen Wageningen University & Research 'This is one of the most fascinating books I have read recently. Do not be deceived by the brevity of the chapters. Each gave me food for thought during many days.' Dr Peter Roessingh University of Amsterdam
