Book Tropical Agroforestry

Download or read book Tropical Agroforestry written by Peter Huxley and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1999-03-22 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry is the cultivation, by farmers, of trees or other woody plants with crops or pasture. Its scientific study is attracting great interest and increasing funding because of its potential to produce sustainable agricultural systems and agroforestry is now included in most university and college courses covering land use subjects. Tropical Agroforestry is the first book that provides an analytical account of the principles, as well as the practices, of agroforestry within the context of the needs of land occupiers and, in so doing, describes the various specialist aspects that are now emerging as part of this discipline. The main objective throughout the book is to present, in a readable way, the underlying functional basis of woody/non-woody plant mixtures and to give a balanced account of how agroforestry can contribute to sustainable production from land. Understanding the biology of multipurpose trees is a key to this.

Book Trees Propagation and Conservation

Download or read book Trees Propagation and Conservation written by Ankita Varshney and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant tissue culture is an essential component of Biotechnology which has gained unbeatable recognition in plant sciences for successful micropropagation and improvement of plant species, leading to the commercial application. A number of plant species have been investigated around the globe. This book presents current research on the application of in vitro technology in the improvement of Balanites aegyptiaca Del., a medicinal plant of semi-arid tropics. The worldwide importance of forestry, summed to the lengthy generation cycles of tree species, makes unavoidable development of new technologies that complement conventional tree breeding programmes in order to obtain improved genotypes. Recently, a new set of tools has become available in the past 20 years that combined with traditional plant breeding will allow scientists to generate products that are genetically improved varieties of the future. These set of tools come under the general title of ‘Biotechnology’. The three specific biotechnological tools have been successfully used in several programmes of plant conservation, namely, tissue culture techniques for in vitro propagation, the use of molecular markers to assess the degree of variability among population and techniques of long-term conservation such as encapsulation and cryopreservation. Plant tissue culture techniques are particularly relevant and become an alternative not only for large scale propagation of individuals that are threatened, reduce production costs and increase gains to the industry, but also to provide ecological advantages as in phytoremediation or in the establishment of artificial plantings in weed infested site. The book gives a complete documentation of the results and demonstration of Balanites aegyptiaca conducted by the authors over the past 5 years. The end-to-end approach developed through plant tissue culture techniques is reflected in the book and there has been a successful transfer of technology from lab to field. The authors hope that this information would provide valuable data and also be a reference material for future research activities in this area.

Book A Multilateral System for Plant Genetic Resources

Download or read book A Multilateral System for Plant Genetic Resources written by David Cooper and published by Bioversity International. This book was released on 1994 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper argues that a comprehensive Multilateral System for plant genetic resouce for food and agriculture is required which ensures the conservation of plant genetic resources and their utilization form human benefit at a global level. Such a system would incorporate agreements on access to plant genetic resources which ensured their availability; mechanisms for the sharing of benefits derived from plant genetic resources; conservation networks and information systems, and research and plant breeding capacity which meets the needs of farmers worldwide. Such a system should be developed with the full participation of all groups involved in teh management genetic resources.

  • Pages : 492 pages

Download or read book New Vistas in Agroforestry written by P. K. R. Nair and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-06-17 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of 31 multi-authored, rigorously peer-reviewed chapters on different aspects of agroforestry, produced as a compendium on the occasion of the 1st World Congress of Agroforestry, June 2004. Its contenst include a tropical-temperate mix of topics, which is a rare feature of a publication of this nature. Several of the chapters are on topics that have not been discussed or described much in agroforestry literature. A third feature is that some of the authors, though well known in their own disciplinary areas, are somewhat new to agroforestry; the perceptions and outlooks of these scholars who are relatively uninfluenced by the past happenings in agroforestry gives a whole new dimension to agroforestry and broadens the scope of the subject. Finally, rather than just reviewing and summarizing past work, most chapters take the extra effort in attempting to outline the next steps. Agroforestry stands to gain enormously from the infusion of these new and different ideas and bold initiatives, thus making the title "New Vistas" quite justifiable.

Book Access to Plant Genetic Resources and the Equitable Sharing of Benefits

Download or read book Access to Plant Genetic Resources and the Equitable Sharing of Benefits written by International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and published by Bioversity International. This book was released on 1996 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 6th session of the FAO Commission on Plant Genetic Resources requested that IPGRI study the feasibility of possible systems for the exchange of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA)1 and the equitable sharing of benefits. The following report is the result of that study. It seeks to provide the Commission with a set of options and their implications and thus to inform international negotiationsconncerning the revision of the International Undertaking on Plant Genetic Tesources. As part of the study process a wide series of consultations was held with major stakeholder groups. A fundamental justification for conserving and characterizing PGRFA is their potential for use in the development of improved crop varieties. These improved varieties are necessary to meet the food needs of a growing population and the demands of changing agro-ecological and social conditions.

Download or read book Plant Genetic Conservation written by Nigel Maxted and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent development of ideas on biodiversity conservation was already being considered almost three-quarters of a century ago for crop plants and the wild species related to them, by the Russian geneticist N.!. Vavilov. He was undoubtedly the first scientist to understand the impor tance for humankind of conserving for utilization the genetic diversity of our ancient crop plants and their wild relatives from their centres of diversity. His collections showed various traits of adaptation to environ mental extremes and biotypes of crop diseases and pests which were unknown to most plant breeders in the first quarter of the twentieth cen tury. Later, in the 1940s-1960s scientists began to realize that the pool of genetic diversity known to Vavilov and his colleagues was beginning to disappear. Through the replacement of the old, primitive and highly diverse land races by uniform modem varieties created by plant breed ers, the crop gene pool was being eroded. The genetic diversity of wild species was equally being threatened by human activities: over-exploita tion, habitat destruction or fragmentation, competition resulting from the introduction of alien species or varieties, changes and intensification of land use, environmental pollution and possible climate change.

Book Indicators of the genetic diversity of trees State pressure benefit and response

Download or read book Indicators of the genetic diversity of trees State pressure benefit and response written by Graudal, L., Loo, J., Fady, B., Vendramin, G., Aravanopoulos, F.A., Baldinelli, G., Bennadji, Z., Ramamonjisoa, L., Changtragoon, S. and Kjær, E.D. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-01-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, prepared within the ambit of The State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources, reviews issues related to the development of indicators for tree genetic diversity. It includes a historical account of the development of science-based indicators for tree genetic diversity that embrace ecological surrogates for genetic diversity, the genealogical approach, genetic monitoring of management units, the use of molecular markers, as well as relevant experience from other organisms and policy processes. It also includes a section on relevant data, data sources, and databases. Finally, the study proposes a set of four operational indicators for monitoring tree genetic diversity. The proposed indicators could support efforts towards sustainable forest management, as well as the development of indicators for the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
