Book Hamburg World City of Logistics in Northern Germany

Download or read book Hamburg World City of Logistics in Northern Germany written by Gülistan Altin and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the coalescence of the world economy, logistics, as a means of networking, has acquired an ever greater significance in the world over the last 25 years. Following the strong rise of commodity prices, starting from Asia - particularly China, - even the U.S. can not inhibit this essential development, because for the most part, it is precisely the result of this growth. In particular, it may be concluded that German exports, upon which Germany's economy is based, have benefited from that. Through the enlargement of the EU, Germany is even more central to the transport hub in Europe. Meanwhile, Germany is the largest foreign trade partner of the ten EU newcomers, which are for the German Economy today more important than the U.S. Hamburg in particular can and will benefit from it. As a hub of north Germany, Hamburg was able, despite many problems, to realise huge projects. Thus, for example, the ‘Altenwerder’ Container Terminal was built, and the airport expansion and modernization and the creation of its routes has gone ahead, the fourth. Elbtunneltube has been opened; and in spite of a dispute about the extension of the runway, an agreement concerning the Airbus factory in Finkenwerder has been signed . But what exactly makes Hamburg now a "World City of Logistics" and the "hub of the North "? Below, because of the large scale of these projects, as well as the limited scope of this paper, this work will just address briefly Hamburg’s harbour, and deal with the impact on the future of Hamburg as a logistical hub.

Book Logistics Clusters

Download or read book Logistics Clusters written by Yossi Sheffi and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How logistics clusters can create jobs while providing companies with competitive advantage. Why is Memphis home to hundreds of motor carrier terminals and distribution centers? Why does the tiny island-nation of Singapore handle a fifth of the world's maritime containers and half the world's annual supply of crude oil? Which jobs can replace lost manufacturing jobs in advanced economies? Some of the answers to these questions are rooted in the phenomenon of logistics clusters—geographically concentrated sets of logistics-related business activities. In this book, supply chain management expert Yossi Sheffi explains why Memphis, Singapore, Chicago, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, and scores of other locations have been successful in developing such clusters while others have not. Sheffi outlines the characteristic “positive feedback loop” of logistics clusters development and what differentiates them from other industrial clusters; how logistics clusters “add value” by generating other industrial activities; why firms should locate their distribution and value-added activities in logistics clusters; and the proper role of government support, in the form of investment, regulation, and trade policy. Sheffi also argues for the most important advantage offered by logistics clusters in today's recession-plagued economy: jobs, many of them open to low-skilled workers, that are concentrated locally and not “offshorable.” These logistics clusters offer what is rare in today's economy: authentic success stories. For this reason, numerous regional and central governments as well as scores of real estate developers are investing in the development of such clusters. Book excerpt: Germany is often referred as the logistics world champion. How to become a world champion? Quite simply, you have to be in the right place at the right time. This means primarily communication, time management, quick thinking and the body language of the opposite person to read. Is it really that simple? What happens behind the scenes? Rarely do you get the conversations and things that are going on in the cabin or in the background. Here already! For many, listening at the door is as exciting as the game itself. Here is the door in front of you, step in. Transparency creates acceptance! That is my motto. From this point of view, I look at nooks and crannies where logistics are designed. In my knowledge book, I show new ways that offer well-dosed enlightenment. Ideally, you can use your own experience to project it onto your environment. In this sense, the title "Business Sparring Logistics" is to be understood as a quintessence. She asks to talk! An exchange of blows is also within the realm of possibility. Come on! If you see a need for conversation? As a sparring partner, I'm just one click away: https: //logistik-service-agentur.com/ A view behind the scenes invites you to create transparency from its unvarnished side. Here about logistics in Germany. This reveals what it is all about: communication and precision, hard work and passion, but also faux pas and smirk. In addition, insights can be gained: How ready for use are the digital instruments? How can the body language of the counterpart in the digital transformation still be read? How do project managers and logisticians interact when there are tens of thousands of connections to communication. How do you all feel the right steps? In a cosy reading corner, you can experience up close with this knowledge book how the everyday life of projects and logisticians in Germany is shaping up. Where is your reading corner? In the office lounge or at home, between home office and refrigerator? How to record logistics at home can be found in the "Time out" sections. This is only for your time management. The World Bank, which calculates the world ranking, focuses on six factors: customs clearance, infrastructure, service quality, the price of international shipments, the ability to track shipments, and the frequency with which goods reach their destination on time. Germany is the largest logistics market in Europe. Nothing can be done without logistics management. New work, communication, language, body language, fast and slow thinking are on board. How does this work when events like Brexit & Co come around the corner? Is "me first" thinking already an epidemic? Is it the rapidly fluctuating fever curves of global trade policy? Maybe it's the many "frenemies". The very people who are "friend" and "enemy". In German we use friend enemy or ironically Partei Party friend. They travel in climate protection, as yellow vests or in car-free inner cities. Count the "Frenemies" in the book. Finally, a note from the american top manager, Lee Iacocca, who is quoted as saying that too many managers are too slow in their decision-making, especially those with too much academic education. It is completely natural to want all the facts and to rely on investigations. But at some point you have to take the plunge into the unknown. Firstly, because even the right decision is wrong if it is made too late. Secondly, because in most cases there is no such thing as certainty. Today, they venture into the unknown to learn my thoughts on logistics management. Certainties on logistics are controversial, such as the issue of decision-making without data. If Iacocca is right, we wonder here whether this also applies to logistics and what certainty exists.

Book The Science of War

Download or read book The Science of War written by Michael E. O'Hanlon and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-21 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military is one of the largest and most complex organizations in the world. How it spends its money, chooses tactics, and allocates its resources have enormous implications for national defense and the economy. The Science of War is the only comprehensive textbook on how to analyze and understand these and other essential problems in modern defense policy. Michael O'Hanlon provides undergraduate and graduate students with an accessible yet rigorous introduction to the subject. Drawing on a broad range of sources and his own considerable expertise as a defense analyst and teacher, he describes the analytic techniques the military uses in every crucial area of military science. O'Hanlon explains how the military budget works, how the military assesses and deploys new technology, develops strategy and fights wars, handles the logistics of stationing and moving troops and equipment around the world, and models and evaluates battlefield outcomes. His modeling techniques have been tested in Iraq and Afghanistan, including the methods he used to predict higher-than-anticipated troop fatalities in Iraq--controversial predictions that have since been vindicated. The Science of War is the definitive resource on warfare in the twenty-first century. Gives the best introduction to defense analysis available Covers defense budgeting Shows how to model and predict outcomes in war Explains military logistics, including overseas basing Examines key issues in military technology, including missile defense, space warfare, and nuclear-weapons testing Based on the author's graduate-level courses at Princeton, Columbia, and Georgetown universities

Book Global e commerce

Download or read book Global e commerce written by Kenneth L. Kraemer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-08-17 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are the Internet and e-commerce truly revolutionizing business practice? This book explodes the transformation myth by demonstrating that the Internet and e-commerce are in fact being adapted by firms to reinforce their existing relationships with customers, suppliers, and business partners. Detailed case studies of eight countries show that, rather than creating a borderless global economy, e-commerce strongly reflects existing local patterns of commerce, business, and consumer preference, and its impact therefore varies greatly by country. Paradoxically, while e-commerce is increasing the efficiency, effectiveness, and competitiveness of firms, it is also increasing the complexity of their environments as they have to deal with more business partners and also face greater competition from other firms. This incisive analysis of the diffusion and impact of e-business provides academic researchers, graduates, and MBA students with a solid basis for understanding its likely evolution.

Book Core Europe and Greater Eurasia

Download or read book Core Europe and Greater Eurasia written by Peter W. Schulze and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, interstate wars are fairly rare--but when they happen, they tend to be more complicated than in the past, combining regional causes with the involvement of external actors as well. This book looks at that problem in the wake of the post-Soviet withdrawal of Russia from involvement in Eastern Europe and the destabilization of regimes in Africa, the Middle East, and the Near East. What do these changes mean for the possibility of establishing peace and security in Europe's future? What role will the growth of nationalism and populism play in those efforts? And what forms should the relationship between Europe and Russia take? Core Europe and Greater Eurasia addresses these questions and many more, assessing our current moment and looking ahead.

Download or read book Integrated Spatial and Transport Infrastructure Development written by Hansjörg Drewello and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenge of growth in transport, especially in freight transport, and scarce resources in money, landscape and local opposition against new infrastructure investment require new solutions from transport policy. This book deals with these issues taking as an example the transport corridor Rotterdam-Genoa, one of the most heavily used in Europe. In 2010 the INTERREG project Code24 with partners from five European countries started with the aim to develop a transnational strategy to strengthen and to develop the corridor. The main objective was to accelerate and jointly develop the transport capacity of the entire corridor by ensuring optimal economic benefits and spatial integration while reducing negative impacts on the environment at local and regional level. These issues are highlighted in the book from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account spatial, economic, environmental and political aspects.
