One is to stimulate cooperation and coordination among the existing data centers in the area of the physical properties of well characterized alloys. The final data generated by these centers for publication should be consistent with one another where correlation or possible overlap exists. The other purpose is the collection (from publications as well as private communications), evaluation, and publication of data in some areas where special competence exists in the Alloy Physics Section. Of interest to the center are metals, semimetals, intermetallic compounds, and alloys. Excluded are those materials which have ill-defined constitutions and heat treatments. An automated system was developed to meet the bibliographic needs of the center. This system will be described as well as the specific properties of interest. The system presently contains a complete annotated file dealing with NMR Knight shift measurements. The soft X-ray spectroscopy compilation is being kept up-to-date with the same system. (Author).

With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1924 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remains the same as in the previous editions. Computer techniques were employed in the preparation and print of the Second Supple ment. The data acquisition, sorting, and further data handling were performed with the aid of aseries of computer programs developed by staft members of the former "Online Group" of the Gmelin Institute, now at Chemplex GmbH, and by the printer" Universitäts druckerei H. Stürtz AG, Würzburg ". Whereas the Handbook itself will continue to appear in printed form, the present Second Supplement of the Index is intended to be the last one issued in print. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the Gmelin Formula Index (GFI) database which is available to the scientific community via STN. This database will be updated annually to include the published Handbook volumes.

Although widely varying viewpoints are represented, all the contributors are very interested in the events in volved in the formatian of siliceaus structures and their function. Data presented deal with these questions in a variety of plant and animal systems, and at levels ranging from the evolutionary to the biochemical and ultrastructural. Innovations in electron microscopy and, indeed, the advent of electron microscopy itself, have stimulated many ultra structural studies of silica deposition, work which has deepened and widened the interest in those organisms which routinely produce "glassy skeletons. " The question of how silicon participates in biological systems in volves a spectrum of fields that indudes the chemistry of silicon per se, its biogeochemistry, biochemistry, ecology, and so forth. In this book, however, attention is focused up on the biological aspects of silicon and siliceous structures, with emphasis on the evolutian, phylogeny, morphology, and distribution of siliceaus structures, on the cellular as peets of silica deposition, and on the physiological and biochemical roles of silicon. This volume represents the first compilatian of such data. Because such a variety of subjects and fields are covered, the reader will have to glean for himself some of the comparative aspects of the data.
