Download or read book Rust Belt Love Song written by Megan Neville and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. In this short chapbook of poetry, Megan Neville dances with ghosts; to be more specific, in 25 pages she closely waltzes with the spector-like memories in her family home before closing the door and leaving it all behind. RUST BELT LOVE SONG is a book about overcoming societal hauntings such as midwestern expectations and the restricting views of a mother. Neville captures intricate emotions with unflinching precision and effortlessly balances the fine line between familial love and cruelty. What good is love if it does not see us? What good is a love song if it doesn't make us dance? Megan Neville's poems are unflinching in their observations of cruelty and tenderness alike. RUST BELT LOVE SONG is still music, and Neville is a worthy artist-stretching ordinary moments to show all of the wonder, pain, and yes, love that exists just under the surface.-Jos (c) Olivarez

Download or read book Light for a Cold Land written by Peter Larisey and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 1993-01-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawren Stewart Harris’ artistic career began in the first decade of our century. Well known for the nationalist-inspired landscapes that he painted between 1908 and 1932, Harris turned resolutely in 1934 to the painting of abstractions. He continued to create works that reflected his own modernist and mystical developments until the end of his life. Canadians praise Harris’ landscapes and admire him as a planner of innovative and heroic-sounding sketching trips into the North. He is also recognized as the chief organizer of the Group of Seven. A long list of younger artists he considered creative greatly benefited from Harris’ encouragement and often generous, practical help; many of them have been interviewed for this book. In the lives of some Canadians harris still functions as a gurulike guide – a role he was quite content to take on during his own lifetime – because of the spiritual content of his art and aesthetic writings and the example of his optimistic, vigorous and apparently untroubled life. But Harris’ was not an untroubled life, and Light for a Cold Land examines his personal crises and difficulties, some of which caused important changes in his art. The book also uncovers the painting styles, artistic tensions and cultural dynamics of the German milieu in which Harris received his only formal art education. His student years in Berlin profoundly influenced not only his art but also his artistic politics and his philosophy. It is ironic that in the art of this most articulate of Canadian nationalist painters, there are extensive German influences. Light for a Cold Land is the first art-historical study of Lawren Harris that attempts to explore his life and all aspects of his career. It is based on extensive work in archives, libraries, public art galleries and private collections in Canada, as well as research in Germany and interviews with members of Harris’ family and many of his friends, acquaintances, colleagues and critics.

Download or read book Very Sincerely Yours written by Kerry Winfrey and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A charming and heartwarming new romantic comedy by the acclaimed author of Waiting for Tom Hanks, Kerry Winfrey. Teddy Phillips never thought she would still be spending every day surrounded by toys at almost thirty years old. But working at a vintage toy store is pretty much all she has going on in her life after being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend. The one joy that she has kept is her not-so-guilty pleasure: Everett’s Place, a local children’s show hosted by Everett St. James, a man whom Teddy finds very soothing . . . and, okay, cute. Teddy finds the courage to write to him, feeling slightly like one of the children who write to him on his show. He always gives sound advice and seems like he has everything figured out—and he pretty much does: Everett has a great support system, wonderful friends, and his dream job. But there is still that persistent feeling in the back of his mind that something is missing. When a woman named Theodora starts writing to Everett, he is drawn to her honesty and vulnerability. They continue writing to each other, all the while living their lives without meeting. When their worlds collide, however, they must both let go of their fears and figure out what they truly want—and if the future they want includes each other.

Download or read book Symbolic Houses in Judaism written by Mimi Levy Lipis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating Jewish spatial practices by exploring the symbol of the house in Judaism, this book examines two groups of houses: ritual objects based on the iconology of the house (ritual houses) and house metaphors (the text, community and the covenant with god as house). This unique pairing is explored as place-making tools which exist in a constant state of tension between diaspora and belonging. Containing many photographs of historical and contemporary artefacts from Europe, Israel and the United States, this book maps out the intersection of architecture, Jewish studies, cultural and gender studies and opens up the discussion of distinctly Jewish objects and metaphors to discourses taking place outside explicitly Jewish contexts.

Download or read book Time and Its Object written by Paolo Fortis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the way objects and images relate to and shape notions of temporality and history. Bringing together ethnographic studies from the Lowlands of Central and South America and Melanesia, it explores the temporality inhering in images and artefacts from a comparative perspective. The chapters focus on how peoples in both regions ‘live in’ and ‘navigate’ time each through their distinctive systems of images and the processes and actions by which these come to be manifest in objects. With original theoretical and ethnographic contributions, the book is valuable reading for scholars interested in visual and material culture and in anthropological approaches to time.
Download or read book The Pointblank Directive written by L. Douglas Keeney and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where was the Luftwaffe on D-Day? Following decades of debate, 2010 saw a formerly classified history restored and in it was a new set of answers. Pointblank is the result of extensive new research that creates a richly textured portrait of perhaps the last untold story of D-Day: three uniquely talented men and why the German Air Force was unable to mount an effective combat against the invasion forces. Following a year of unremarkable bombing against German aircraft industries, General Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, commander of the U.S. Army Air Forces, placed his lifelong friend General Carl A. “Tooey” Spaatz in command of the strategic bombing forces in Europe, and his protégé, General James “Jimmy” Doolittle, command of the Eighth Air Force in England. For these fellow aviation strategists, he had one set of orders – sweep the skies clean of the Luftwaffe by June 1944. Spaatz and Doolittle couldn't do that but they could clear the skies sufficiently to gain air superiority over the D-Day beaches. The plan was called Pointblank.
