Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of a nation reflects the history of the country concerned. Although Switzerland is only a small nation she can look back upon a long and fascinating history. The Swiss Confederation was not brought about in any spectacular way but can best be described as the end product of prevailing common sense which welded four distinctly different ethnic groups together and safeguarded their independent cultural development. The ways and means of this achievement were complicated and intricate, and mirrored successfully solutions which the rest of Europe, facing similar problems, never mastered. In this indigenous evolution of Switzerland the reader will find the explanation why there is no history of Swiss literature but a history of the literatures of all four national languages, each of which can claim special and adequate attention by literary historians. While the literature of other countries brought the testimonies of literary achievement forward like a huge wave which began in times immemorial, reached the present and flows on into the future, one feels rather inclined to speak of four different rivers in Swiss literature, each taking its own and individual course.

Download or read book German Students War Letters written by Philipp Witkop and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-03-16 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally appearing at the same time as the pacifist novel All Quiet on the Western Front, this powerful collection provides a glimpse into the hearts and minds of an enemy that had been thoroughly demonized by the Allied press. Composed by German students who had left their university studies in order to participate in World War I, these letters reveal the struggles and hardships that all soldiers face. The stark brutality and surrealism of war are revealed as young men from Germany describe their bitter combat and occasional camaraderie with soldiers from many nations, including France, Great Britain, and Russia. Like its companion volume, War Letters of Fallen Englishmen, these letters were carefully selected for their depth of perception, the intensity of their descriptions, and their messages to future generations. "Should these letters help towards the establishment of justice and better understanding between nations," the editor reflects in his introduction, "their deaths will not have been in vain." This edition contains a new foreword by the distinguished World War I historian Jay Winter.

Book excerpt: The German Empire of 1740 was established on Christmas Day 800 when the Pope placed the imperial crown on the head of Charlemagne in Rome. From that time until far down the Middle Ages the Empire stood forth as the great power in western Europe. Conjointly with the Papacy it was the acknowledged head of Christendom. But the Empire comprised many different racial elements which could not be coalesced. A political unit in name, the Empire was never one in spirit. In the centuries which followed Charlemagne various emperors tried to mold the imperial provinces into an organic whole - Otto the Great (936-973) succeeded in part - but all were ultimately defeated either by intrigues of powerful nobles or by divergence of material interests...

Download or read book Ernst Toller and German Society written by Robert Ellis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the years of Weimar and the Third Reich, Toller was one of the more active of the "other Germany's" left-wing intellectuals. A leader of the Bavarian Soviet of 1919, he had in addition won the Kleist prize and was recognized as one of Germany's best playwrights. Indeed, during the years of the Weimar Republic, the popularity of his works was unquestioned. His first play, Die Wandlung, was soon sold out and required a second edition; his dramatic works and poems were translated into twenty-seven languages. During the 1920’s it was said that he "dominated the German and Russian theatre" and that he was the "most spectacular personality in modern German literature." It was common for contemporaries to classify him as one of the foremost German writers of the Weimar era. During the 1930s, as an exile, he popularized to foreign audiences the idea of “the other Germany”and became a leading spokesman against Hitler. However, it is Toller the social critic rather than Toller the dramatist with which thisbook is concerned, his ideas, his visions for Germany and Europe as transmitted in his works of fiction and prose. The book reflects on the responsibility an intellectual-critic has when writing about a democratic society (the Weimar Republic) that is unsuccessfully balancing between survival and annihilation. Toller was furthermore a Jewish intellectual. How did his religious traditions shape his views? He was also German and this raises a whole host of specifically Germanic patterns of looking at the world. He was also a left-wing intellectual and Toller is set in the broader context of left-wing intellectuals in Weimar and the Nazi era. A related reflection is to ask: so what? What difference did it make? How much of an influence do intellectuals have in the development of society? What is the relationship between intellectuals and their readers in a troubled society?
