Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Life in Town and Country In one of the fervid songs which Ernst Moritz Arndt wrote to nerve his countrymen, in the time of national crisis and awakening nearly a century ago, the poet foretold the growth of a new and greater Germany, whose boundaries should be co-extensive with the German speech. "What is the German's fatherland?" he asked. The answer was that in the time which he knew to be coming there would be one fatherland for all the Germanic races, which should be neither Prussia nor Austria, neither Bavaria nor Swabia, in particular, but these and every other piece of European territory on which German was the people's language. Book excerpt: The strangest of all these begging-customs, however, is the one in vogue between Christmas and Twelfth Night. Then the children go out in couples, each boy carrying an earthenware pot, over which a bladder is stretched, with a piece of stick tied in the middle. When this stick is twirled about, a not very melodious grumbling sound proceeds from the contrivance, which is known by the name of 'Rommelpot.' By going about in this manner the children are able to collect some few pence to buy bread--or gin--for their fathers. When they stop before any one's house, they drawl out, 'Give me a cent, and I will pass on, for I have no money to buy bread.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is very good at recording wars, disasters and scandals, but does not usually record the ordinary details, such as how people went grocery shopping, everyday dramas and how the table was set for dinner. Little details like these are usually lost to the ravages of time and neglect, thought too unimportant and mundane to record. However, that is exactly what this collection of woodcuts focuses on, the scenes of the everyday lives in the town and country people in southern Germany in the early 16th century. These woodcuts provide a glimpse into the unrecorded days and lives of the people, from church festivals, shopping at the markets, wedding processions, interior scenes, and hunting trips to the Emperor coming to town, from the sacred to the profane, all in crisp black and white lines.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of A Legacy of Spies. "Haven't you realized that only appearances matter?" The British Embassy in Bonn is up in arms. Her Majesty's financially troubled government is seeking admission to Europe's Common Market just as anti-British factions are rising to power in Germany. Rioters are demanding reunification, and the last thing the Crown can afford is a scandal. Then Leo Harting—an embassy nobody—goes missing with a case full of confidential files. London sends Alan Turner to control the damage, but he soon realizes that neither side really wants Leo found—alive. Set against the threat of a German-Soviet alliance, John le Carré's A Small Town in Germany is a superb chronicle of Cold War paranoia and political compromise. With an introduction by the author.

Book The German Family Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The German Family Routledge Revivals written by Richard J. Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the history of the German family in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The contributions deal with the influence of industrialisation on family life in town and country, with rural families and communities under the impact of social and economic change, and with the role and influence of the family in the lives of men and women in the newly-emerged working class. Research on the history of the family had so far, at the point of this book’s publication in 1981, concentrated on England and France; this book adds an important comparative dimension by extending the discussion into Central Europe and bringing fresh evidence and interpretation to bear on the wider debate about the effects of industrialisation on family structure and family life as a whole. The authors approach the subject from a variety of perspectives, including social anthropology, oral history, economic history and feminist studies. This book is ideal for students of history, particularly the history of Germany.
