Book Weimar Cinema Embodiment and Historicity

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its retrieval and (re)construction, the past has become interwoven with the images and structure of cinema. Not only have mass media—especially film and television—shaped the content of memories and histories, but they have also shaped their very form. Combining historicization with close readings of German director Ernst Lubitsch's historical films, this book focuses on an early turning point in this development, exploring how the medium of film shaped modern historical experience and understanding—how it moved embodied audiences through moving images.

Book The Design of the University

Download or read book The Design of the University written by Heinz-Dieter Meyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the reason for the American university’s global preeminence? How did the American university succeed where the development of the German university, from which it took so much, stalled? In this closely-argued book, Meyer suggests that the key to the American university’s success is its institutional design of self-government. Where other university systems are dependent on the patronage of state, church, or market, the American university is the first to achieve true autonomy, which it attained through an intricate system of engagements with societal actors and institutions that simultaneously act as amplifiers of its impact and as checks on the university’s ever-present corrosive tendencies. Built on a searching analysis of the design thinking of Wilhelm von Humboldt and Adam Smith and closely tracing the learning process by which Americans adapted the German model, The Design of the University dismisses efforts to copy superficial features of the American university in order to achieve world-class rank. Calling attention to the design details of the university and the particulars of its institutional environment, this volume identifies the practices and choices that produced the gold standard for today’s world class higher education.

Book Interwar Salzburg

Download or read book Interwar Salzburg written by Robert von Dassanowsky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2024-02-08 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long-overdue reassessment of post-1918 Salzburg as a distinct Austrian cultural hub that experimented in moving beyond war and empire into a modern, self-consciously inclusive, and international center for European culture. For over 300 years, Salzburg had its own legacy as a city-state at an international crossroads, less stratified than Europe's colonial capitals and seeking a political identity based in civic participation with its own economy and politics. After World War I, Salzburg became a refuge. Its urban and bucolic spaces staged encounters that had been brutally cut apart by the war; its deep-seated traditions of citizenship, art, and education guided its path. In Interwar Salzburg, contributors from around the globe recover an evolving but now lost vanguard of European culture, fostering not only new identities in visual and performing arts, film, music, and literature, but also a festival culture aimed at cultivating an inclusive public (not an international elite) and a civic culture sharing public institutions, sports, tourism, and a diverse spectrum of cultural identities serving a new European ideal.

Book The Devil s General and Germany Jekyll and Hyde

Download or read book The Devil s General and Germany Jekyll and Hyde written by Carl Zuckmayer and published by Continuum. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both works in this volume - a play by Carl Zuckmayer (1896-1977) and an unusual contemporary study of Nazi Germany by Sebastian Haffner (1907-99) - bear testimony to the disturbing events that were to change German history in the aftermath of World War I. The abridged translation of The Devil's General, which was approved by Zuckmayer himself, is about a World War I flier who commits suicide as he comes to realize the unintended havoc he has wrought in his obsession to fly. Sebastian Haffner, whose real name was Raimund Pretzel (which was changed with the publication of Germany: Jekyll and Hyde), remained a controversial journalist all his life, working for both left-wing and right-wing journals. The work excerpted here was written in 1940 when Haffner, reared in a liberal tradition, was in a British detention camp as an enemy alien.

Book Three Contemporary German Novellas Friedrich Christian Delius Peter Schneider and Martin Walser

Download or read book Three Contemporary German Novellas Friedrich Christian Delius Peter Schneider and Martin Walser written by A. Leslie Willson and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 2001 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Runaway Horse by Martin Walser revolves around two friends, long separated, who meet on vacation. One is an idle teacher; the other an optimistic go-getter. The teacher discovers that one cannot avoid dealing head-on with life any better than one can reason with a runaway horse. Peter Schneider's Lenz, which takes its title from the melancholy novella by Georg Bnchner, is about the life of a young intellectual in 1960s East Germany. This is its first publication in English. The Sunday I Became World Champion, by F. C. Delius, portrays a postwar German village through the eyes of a preacher's son--a boy whose stutter is helped by the success of the national soccer team.
