  • Author : Jason Tetro
  • Publisher : Doubleday Canada
  • Release : 2013-11-05
  • ISBN : 0385678533
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book The Germ Code written by Jason Tetro and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of the human race, germs have been making us sick. Whether the ailment is a cold, the flu, diabetes, obesity or certain cancers, the likely cause is germs. Our ancient enemies have four families - bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa - and many names: Ebola, E. coli, salmonella, norovirus, gonorrhea. . . Human beings are engaged in a "war on germs," in which we develop ever-more sophisticated weapons and defensive strategies. But it is a war we can never win. Our best plan for staying as healthy is to choose our battles carefully, and try to co-exist with germs as best we can. The Germ Code is a wise, witty and wonderfully readable guide to our relationship with these infinitesimal but infinitely powerful creatures. Microbiologist Jason Tetro takes us outside the lab and shows the enormous influence of germs upon humanity's past, present and future. He unlocks the mysteries of "the germ code" to reveal how these organisms have exploited our every activity and colonized every corner of the earth. From his own research and personal experience, Tetro relates how the most recent flu pandemic happened, how others may have been averted and how more may come about if we aren't careful. He also explains that not every germ is our foe, and offers advice on harnessing the power of good germs to stay healthy and make our planet a better place. The Germ Code is a fascinating journey through an unseen world, an essential manual to living in harmony with germs and a life-enhancing (as well as life-saving!) good read.

Book Cognitive Foundations for Improving Mathematical Learning

Download or read book Cognitive Foundations for Improving Mathematical Learning written by David C. Geary and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth volume in the Mathematical Cognition and Learning series focuses on informal learning environments and other parental influences on numerical cognitive development and formal instructional interventions for improving mathematics learning and performance. The chapters cover the use of numerical play and games for improving foundational number knowledge as well as school math performance, the link between early math abilities and the approximate number system, and how families can help improve the early development of math skills. The book goes on to examine learning trajectories in early mathematics, the role of mathematical language in acquiring numeracy skills, evidence-based assessments of early math skills, approaches for intensifying early mathematics interventions, the use of analogies in mathematics instruction, schema-based diagrams for teaching ratios and proportions, the role of cognitive processes in treating mathematical learning difficulties, and addresses issues associated with intervention fadeout.

Book Points and Curves in the Monster Tower

Download or read book Points and Curves in the Monster Tower written by Richard Montgomery and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cartan introduced the method of prolongation which can be applied either to manifolds with distributions (Pfaffian systems) or integral curves to these distributions. Repeated application of prolongation to the plane endowed with its tangent bundle yields the Monster tower, a sequence of manifolds, each a circle bundle over the previous one, each endowed with a rank $2$ distribution. In an earlier paper (2001), the authors proved that the problem of classifying points in the Monster tower up to symmetry is the same as the problem of classifying Goursat distribution flags up to local diffeomorphism. The first level of the Monster tower is a three-dimensional contact manifold and its integral curves are Legendrian curves. The philosophy driving the current work is that all questions regarding the Monster tower (and hence regarding Goursat distribution germs) can be reduced to problems regarding Legendrian curve singularities.

His mission is simple; eradicate pain and misery. From his landing spot in a city park, Ogos watches the world go by; creating a zone of peace and comfort around him that touches everyone who steps into his cool shade. A group of park-goers adore the tree that never wilts, and they find themselves consistently drawn to Ogos, who has the power to cure their minds and their bodies. It seems that Ogos can cure everything, from homelessness to illness. But there is one thing that Ogos does not have the power to change, and that is his own isolation, for as a tree, he cannot experience the same life as his newfound friends. On this new, imperfect planet, how can Ogos make a difference and be truly happy? So, he found a way to become human. This is a story about kindness, about selflessness, and togetherness in a world that insists on the opposite.
