Book excerpt: This is Nietzsche's critique of contemporary German society, culture, and philosophical engagement, juxtaposed with the philosophical ethos of Arthur Schopenhauer. This unpublished preface, intended for an unfinished book, articulates a lament for what is perceived as the degradation of German culture and education, attributing this decline to a general malaise and superficiality in intellectual and everyday life. Nietzsche begins by depicting modern Germany as a place overwhelmed by a desperate pursuit of happiness and greatness that paradoxically leads to cultural and intellectual mediocrity. This pursuit is portrayed as so dominant and destructive that it requires almost a leap of faith ("credo quia absurdum est") to believe in the possibility of genuine cultural renewal in this context. The critique extends to the German academic and cultural scene, which is described as philistine, historically obsessed but superficial, and ultimately disconnected from the genuine philosophical pursuit exemplified by Schopenhauer. Much of the text is devoted to dissecting the failings of what he calls "the educated man" in Germany. This figure is criticized for a historical consciousness that bypasses the profound and the sublime, opting instead for a comfort in mundane historical detail that shields him from deeper engagement with philosophical or existential truths. This approach to history and culture is seen as emblematic of a broader societal avoidance of the profound challenges and radical ideas presented by thinkers such as Schopenhauer. This manuscript, unpublished in Nietzsche's life, was first published in German in 1901 under the title "Nachgelassene Fragmente" by his sister, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, along with other scholars. They were then re-published in various formats after that -including in a series titled "Gesammelte Werke" (Collected Works), later reorganized and expanded into the "Gesamtausgabe" (Complete Edition), which included comprehensive collections of Nietzsche's notebooks and other writings from various periods of his life. This new 2024 translation from the original German, Latin and Greek manuscript contains a new Afterword by the translator, a timeline of Nietzsche's life and works, an index with descriptions of his core concepts and summaries of his complete body of works. This translation is designed to allow the armchair philosopher to engage deeply with Nietzsche's works without having to be a full-time Academic. The language is modern and clean, with simplified sentence structures and diction to make Nietzsche's complex language and arguments as accessible as possible. This Reader's Edition also contains extra material that amplifies the manuscript with autobiographical, historical and linguistic context. This is the first interpretive study of shared themes and dialogues between late nineteenth-century and twentieth-century experts on classical antiquity and philosophers. Assessing how modern philosophers have incorporated ancient resources with the context of German philosophy, chapters in this volume are devoted to philosophical giants such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Wilhelm Dilthey, Walter Benjamin, Martin Heidegger, Hannah Arendt, Hans Jonas, Hans Blumenberg, and Peter Sloterdijk. Among the ancient Stoics, the focus is on Seneca, Epictetus, and doxography, but reference will also be made to texts that have so far been neglected by non-specialists. Often references to Stoic texts are playful, making it hard for non-specialists to reconstruct their understanding of the sources; by illuminating and enhancing the philosophical significance of these receptions, this book argues that they can change our understanding of Greek and Roman Stoic doctrines and authors, twentieth-century continental philosophy, and the themes which coordinate their ongoing dialogues. Some of these themes are surprising for Stoicism, such as the poetics of tragic drama and the anthropological foundations of hermeneutics. Others are already central to Stoic reception, such as the constitution of the subject in relation to various ethical, ecological, and metaphysical powers and processes; among these are contemplation and knowledge; identity and plurality; temporality, facticity, and fate; and personal, social, and planetary forms of self-cultivation and self-appropriation. Addressing the need for a synoptic vision of related continental readings of Stoicism, this book brings ancient texts into new dialogues with up-to-date scholarship, facilitating increased understanding, critical evaluation, and creative innovation within the continental response to Stoicism.

Book excerpt: This book investigates Hegel’s interpretation of the mystical philosophy of Jakob Böhme (1575-1624), considered in the context of the reception of Böhme in the 18th and 19th centuries, and of Hegel’s own understanding of mysticism as a philosophical approach. The three sections of this book present: the historical background of Hegel’s encounter with Böhme’s writings; the development of two different conceptions of mysticism in Hegel’s work; and finally Hegel’s approach to Böhme’s philosophy, discussing in detail the references to Böhme both in published writings and manuscripts. According to Hegel, Böhme is “the first German philosopher”. The reason for placing Böhme at the very beginning of German philosophy is that Hegel considers him to be a profound thinker, despite his rudimentary education. Hegel’s fascination with Böhme mainly concerns the mystic’s understanding of the symbiotic relation between God and his opposite, the Devil: he considers this to be the true speculative core of Böhme’s thought. By interpreting Böhme, Hegel intends to free the speculative content of his thought from the limitations of the inadequate, barbarous form in which the mystic expressed it, and also to liberate Böhme from the prejudices surrounding his writings, placing him firmly in the territory of philosophy and detaching him from the obscurity of esotericism. Combining historical reconstructions and philosophical argumentation, this book guides the reader through an important phase in German philosophy, and ultimately into an inquiry about the relationship between mysticism and philosophy itself.
