Book Geosciences Environment and Man

Download or read book Geosciences Environment and Man written by H. Chamley and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-08-28 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geosciences, Environment and Man has three major objectives, which determine the division in three parts of this volume: I. To consider the main natural geological processes interfering with and therefore threatening the activities of man: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, land movements, floods, wind and coastal risks; main prevention and mitigation measures against these natural hazards are presented. II. To examine the exploitation of earth's natural resources such as materials, ores and minerals, fossil fuels, water, radioactivity, and the resulting consequences on solid Earth balance and future. III. To assess the hold level reached by the activities of man on planet surface envelopes through agriculture, urbanization, industrialization, and communication; the local to global effects of human influence triggered by recent demographic growth on underground, soils, water and air characters are taken into account. Both deteriorating and beneficial aspects of Earth - the interactions of man are emphasized, as well as mitigation or restoration measures and perspectives.

Download or read book Environmental Geology written by Matthew R. Bennett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1997 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Geology: geology and the human environment provides a comprehensive introduction to the subject of environmental geology - the interaction of humans with the geological environment. As a subject, environmental geology has grown in popularity with the rise of interest in environmental issues. Despite this, environmental geology is not a new subject but a meld of three related earth science disciplines: economic geology, engineering geology and applied geomorphology, each of which has been given a new focus through the need for greater environmental management. This book is the first of its kind to recognise that the true challenge of environmental geology does not lie in rural areas or in the green issues, but in the urban environment and its resource hinterland. By the year 2000, over 3.5 billion people, over 50% of the world's population, will live in urban areas covering just 1% of the earth's surface. It is here that human interaction with the geological environment is at its most intense: it is here that the practical challenges in environmental geology lie. Urban growth fuels the demand for mineral and water resources, tests our skills as engineering geologists, produces vast volumes of waste which must be managed, and increases human vulnerability to natural hazards. All of these topics are covered within this book. Environmental geology is a practical subject, and environmental geologists have a crucial role in managing our interaction with the geological environment. This textbook demonstrates how environmental geologists can make a practical contribution to managing this interaction allowing both sustained development and environmental conservation.

Book A View of Earth Man and the Geosciences

Download or read book A View of Earth Man and the Geosciences written by Edward Murray and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers a wide range of scientific topics in developing a perspective of the ground we stand on and its importance to us and our wellbeing. It starts by charting Man's historical enquiries of the cosmos in Chapter 1 and outlines our current understanding of the Universe and planet Earth through Chapters 2 and 3. Earth is linked to and constantly interacts with not only its immediate environs comprising the planets in our corner of space and the Sun which lights up our days, but the vast Universe beyond. The Moon tugs our seas and oceans creating continuous tidal fluctuations; the Sun provides energy for life but also bombards us with solar winds of charged particles that affect our electricity supplies, communications and could potentially be detrimental to life; the Milky Way is our home within an ever changing Universe that could one day see our demise. An aim of the book is to set the role of geotechnical engineering and geology in the context of other pure and applied sciences and this entails investigating how these geosciences overlap with the sciences of astronomy, astrophysics, physics, chemistry and the environmental sciences. The early chapters set the background to the earth science topics delved into in later chapters and allow a fuller and more interesting story to be told. They put into context the nature and complexity of soils and rocks on Earth, as described in Chapter 4, and the utilization of the ground and exploitation of its natural resources in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6, the significance of ground gases and the interaction of the ground with our layered, protective atmospheric blanket, including the importance and source of greenhouse gases, is explored. The subsequent Chapter 7 on our 'Changing Planet' first looks at the influence of phenomena such as earthquakes, faults and volcanoes and then extends the discussion into further important aspects of Earth's atmosphere including the significance of ground-generated aerosol particles. Chapter 7 then explores the potentially detrimental environmental consequences of mankind's growth, as the dominant Earth species, in terms of Global Warming and contamination. Earth's water environment (the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, groundwater and atmospheric water) is not dealt with as a separate chapter but is integral and of vital importance to much of the discussions and accordingly dealt with in this way.The same science principles that apply on Earth apply in the distant reaches of space, though the physics is often far more extreme than our everyday experiences. Nevertheless, we see on our planet anomalies and complexities in behaviour that are not readily understood, but need to be reconciled with scientific principles in order to develop simplified engineering, geological and environmental predictive tools. The development of our understanding of the ground in a geotechnical context requires an interpretation of the ground's characteristics based on sound scientific principles and Chapters 8 and 9 extend the book to explore how these apply. These latter chapters outline recent research into the implications of thermodynamics in interpreting the ground's engineering characteristics, particularly for the troublesome, composite three-phase materials comprising unsaturated soils. The ground is multifaceted in both its characteristics and behaviour and a deeper understanding of the nature and character of the ground should lead to improvements in prediction of its complex physiognomy.

Book The Geosciences and Effects on Environment

Download or read book The Geosciences and Effects on Environment written by Kailash Malode and published by . This book was released on 2023-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geoscience, or earth science, encompasses various scientific studies related to the Earth's systems. It includes fields like geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy. Environmental pollution is a significant concern in geoscience, affecting human health, soil, water, and more. Mitigating pollution through the "three R's" (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) is essential. Geothermal energy extraction and surface water and groundwater resources are important topics in geoscience. Volcanic gases, tsunamis, ocean deoxygenation, and earthquakes are other phenomena studied in geoscience. Environmental sustainability and the preservation of ecosystems are crucial for future generations. The book provides insights into geological activities and their implications for preventing environmental damage and human suffering. This book explores current systems, such as hydrology, soil, air, and water resources, and their impact on human activities. It equips readers with scientific skills to address environmental questions and emphasizes critical analysis of data. The book discusses the effects of human activities and environmental change on water and soil resources, provides insights into geographical cycles, and examines land-use opportunities and limitations. It promotes environmental awareness, protection, and sustainable development. The volume contributes to understanding the impact of environmental change on geosciences and offers insights for environmental management in disaster-prone regions.
