Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Tyrrell's Letters To many the name of George Tyrrell is SO familiar that any account of his life may seem superfluous - to many, but not to all. Furthermore, the years of stress through which the world has lately passed have dulled the memory of many events that stood out conspicuously in times when thought was not at a discount and action all that signified. The story of the, Modernist movement was hardly ended before the Great War began a crisis during which deeper and more abiding interests were inevitably suspended in favour of ques tions materially urgent and imperative. But [even were Modernism generally remembered, Modernism is far from being all in the life of Tyrrell. Indeed it may be said that Modernism did a certain amount of injustice to his memory, in so far as it overshadowed other sides of his work and his character. He was a Modernist, and he gave a portion of his life to the prosecution of that movement but he was other things besides -he was a man of unusual spiritual insight of moral acumen of keen human sympathy and psychological Skill of literary power and percep tion; of abounding humour and fun. He had been a missioner and a confessor before he was a writer; he was the friend of many for whom his orthodoxy or unorthodoxy had little importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autobiography and Life of George Tyrrell, Vol. 2 of 2 Before we take up the narrative which George Tyrrell too soon abandoned, it may be well to supplement the portrait which he gave us in the first volume by a further description of the man himself, as known to his friends, and as known also to his enemies or critics. Such description is chiefly authoritative as drawn from his own utterances, of which there are plenty available as frankly self-revealing as those of the autobiography. They may, indeed, possess even higher authority in the matter of portraiture than those of the former document, being instantaneous photographs and not records of the past. From very opposite quarters a good deal of advice has been tendered to the compiler of this life by those chiefly interested in one or other aspect of the work and character of its subject. There are Catholics whose only desire is to justify him to their co-religionists, as there are anti-clericals for whom his chief importance lies in the use that can be made of his name and writings in their particular campaign; there are those who care only for his constructive, and those who care chiefly for his destructive work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of George Long Her statement proved true and the companion volume is now in my hands through the kindness of Mrs. Emma Breckinridge, of Grove Hill, Botetourt County, Virginia. Mrs. Breckinridge is a sister of Mr. John Gilmer and a daughter of Peachy Gilmer, the eld est brother of the subject of this sketch. This second volume is even more invaluable than the first as it contains all of Gilmer's own letters to Mr. Jefferson, etc., and also throws many valuable side lights upon the internal history of Virginia for the period from 1815 to 1825.
