Book excerpt: This book offers an essential introduction to Taiwan’s geoparks, issues related to their development, and prospects for a sustainable future. It discusses how promoting geoparks can serve as a tool for a sustainable society based on the lessons learned in Taiwan. Situated in a tectonically dynamic geological setting (at the boundary of the Eurasian and the Philippine Plates) and culturally diversified geographical setting, Taiwan is an ideal candidate for showcasing its “natural wonders” in geoparks, promoting landscape conservation, and expanding the horizons of geoheritage world-wide. The book begins by illustrating the physical and human environments of Taiwan’s geoparks, helping readers understand their foundation. In turn, the second section includes chapters describing the development of all six Taiwanese geoparks, offering comprehensive information on each. Lastly, it illustrates the social development and mechanisms used to promote each geopark.

Politically, Taiwan don't have any UNESCO World Heritages now. That's shy Yehliu is certified as UNESCO GeoPark not UNESCO World Heritages. But Yehliu GeoPark is one of the beautiful and amazing heritage in Taiwan! 101 of photos, 101 of Wonderful! Book Global Geographical Heritage Geoparks and Geotourism

Download or read book Global Geographical Heritage Geoparks and Geotourism written by R.B. Singh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the geographical, geomorphological, ecological, touristic and socioeconomic aspects of natural heritage, argues for the dynamic conservation of that heritage and explains its key characteristics, promotion, conservation and management to achieve sustainable development goals. Emerging concepts such as geodiversity, geographical heritage sites, geomonuments, geoparks and geotourism are increasingly being used by conservationists. At present, the development of geoparks is a major global theme involving the application of geosciences to promote the inclusive growth of society and the protection and conservation of our unique geoheritage. Currently, there are 147 UNESCO global geoparks across 41 countries, in addition to a number of national-level geoparks. Pursuing a holistic approach towards such sites will sensitise the general public to the need for geoconservation of significant geosites and promote it through geotourism. It is a crucial issue, as various countries around the world are eager to develop their geoparks and are working for the conservation of geoheritage sites at the national level. This unique book gathers contributions from 15 countries in the form of case studies analysing the realities on of geographical heritage, geoparks and geotourism. The respective chapters address the role of geoparks as essential tools for education, recreation and nature conservation. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide for geoscientists, planners, policymakers, civil society and anyone concerned about the conservation of geoheritage sites and geoparks for a sustainable future Earth.

Book Natural History and Natural Resources through the Earth Sciences in Modern China after 1900

Download or read book Natural History and Natural Resources through the Earth Sciences in Modern China after 1900 written by Markes Johnson and published by Ethics International Press. This book was released on 2024-10-03 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of major changes in mainland China since the start of the modern era in 1900, as leaders grappled with how to harness natural resources requiring equal development in the pure and applied sciences based on fundamentals in geology. On one hand, China was put on the global stage with discovery of Peking Man fossils in the 1920s but has continued to win global acclaim for more recent discoveries of feathered dinosaurs and the earliest examples of metazoan life. At the same time, China struggled against outside exploitation to take full control of its own mineral and oil reserves -which today are increasingly imported from abroad to maintain oil and steel production through the Belt and Road initiative. The book concludes with a a discussion of what the ‘Chinese Dream’ may mean in comparison to what many in the United States consider as a birthright with the ‘American Dream’.

This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first-ever overview of and guide to the geological setting and related features of the famous, volcanically active Galapagos Islands, as well as an in-depth analysis of the setting’s relationship to the region’s unique and iconic ecology, and its conservation. Further, it provides an introduction to human settlement and activity on the islands, including the transition from subsistence to a fishing economy and more recently tourism, all in the context of increasingly restrictive conservation regulations. Importantly, the book also explores the development of the concept and practice of sustainable development across the islands as a framework for future economic development, pursuing an approach that reconciles the needs of the resident population with conservation of this fragile environment. The book is intended for a broad readership, from those engaged in geological and ecological studies, college and university educators and conservation practitioners, to more general visitors to the islands.

Book The Practice of Sustainable Tourism

Download or read book The Practice of Sustainable Tourism written by Michael Hughes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-19 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable tourism is a widely used term that has accumulated considerable attention from researchers and policy makers over the past two decades. However, there is still an apparently wide gap between theory and practice in the area. Recent scholarly research has tended to focus on niche areas of alternative tourism rather than address the broader issues and vagaries and paradoxes that appear to plague the broader notion of sustainable tourism. As such, there is a need for a new and pragmatic analysis of sustainable tourism as an overarching idea and how this manifests in practice. The Practice of Sustainable Tourism fulfils this need by offering a fresh perspective on sustainable tourism as an umbrella concept with inherent tensions. It presents a way of thinking about tourism based on the notion of finding common ground using the dialectic tradition of philosophy. Dialectics focusses on resolving opposing viewpoints by recognising they have common elements that can be combined into a rational and practical solution over time. As part of this approach, the book examines the strongly apparent tensions within alternative tourism as well as the paradox of continuing growth and other mass tourism related issues. It is divided into three parts, Part I includes chapters discussing the general concept of sustainable tourism, its history, current status and possible futures; Part II includes a range of destination case studies exploring how sustainable tourism has been applied and Part III includes perspectives from the tourism operator view. Given the international content and challenging themes, the book will be appealing internationally to students, researchers and academics in the fields of tourism, geography, sustainability and social science.

Book excerpt: The first book to focus exclusively on the subject, Geodiversity, Second Edition describes the interrelationships between geodiversity and biodiversity, the value of geodiversity to society, as well as current threats to its existence. Illustrated with global case studies throughout, the book examines traditional approaches to protecting geodiversity and the new management agenda now being implemented. The Second Edition of this successful textbook continues to build on the success of the first edition which is still the standard reference for the subject. Fully revised and updated throughout, the Second Edition now includes new material on geoparks, geotourism and implications of climate change for geoconservation. Reviews of previous edition: "Murray Gray's new book is the first widely available text to bring together and analyse some of these emerging ideas….The result is a book that should be in the library of every land manager and one that is likely to lead many practicing geoscientists and quaternarists to a new view of the importance of their field for nature conservation and environmental management.." —Journal of Quaternary Science, Vol.19, No.8, December 2004 "It is strange that it is necessary to justify the importance of geodiversity…. Murray Gray does it with brilliance, not only to convince 'non-believers', but giving inspiration to us that have worked in geoconservation for a long time." —ProGEO News, 3 & 4, 2003 "...The author provides a timely review of recent advances in the integration of geodiversity into wider conservation and planning strategies..." —Journal of Quaternary Science, Vol.19, No.8, December 2004 "...the book is well-written and follows a clear and concise outline." —Environmental Geology, Vol. 48, No. 2, July 2005
