Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geometric Patterns as the Basis of Design: A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the University of California, Berkeley, May 1915 The study of design, which occupies such a prominent place in the field of art, should be made by an analytical process similar to that by which sciences are approached; namely, to first examine and understand the nature of its basic principles by reducing the design to its simple cl ements, to evaluate these various parts, and finally, to gra dually reestablish the coordination, thereby studying its structure and the separate and combined functions of its elements. The study of Geometric Patterns as the Basis of Design is such.an analysis;for geometric patterns are the fundamental principles from which issue the means for the production of all forms of pleasing and agreeable li nes, that is, for design. Download or read book Islamic Geometric Patterns written by Eric Broug and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring new patterns with detailed explanatory texts, this revised edition is an inspirational guide for craftspeople and artists alike. The marvels of Islamic patterns—the most recognizable visual expression of Islamic art and architecture—are not just a beautiful accident. The ancient practitioners of this craft used traditional methods of measurement to create dazzling geometric compositions, often based on the repetition of a single pattern. The results are magnificent in their beauty and awe-inspiring in their execution. Now, with the aid of this book, everyone can learn how to master this ancient art and create their own intricate patterns or re-create classic examples. All that is needed is a pencil, a ruler, a compass, and a steady hand. Technical tips demonstrate the geometric basics such as how to create designs from one of the foundational “family” shapes: a square, hexagon, or pentagon. This is followed by step-by-step instructions for reproducing some of the best examples of geometric patterns. Islamic Geometric Patterns contains twenty-three geometric patterns and brief histories of some of the most famous and beautiful Islamic art and architecture from around the world. This revised edition features seven new patterns from locations including: Ak Medrese in Nigde, Turkey; Chellah necropolis in Rabat, Morocco; Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, Pakistan; the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah in Agra, India; the Alcazar in Seville, Spain; Zaouia Moulay Idriss II in Fes, Morocco; and Darwish Pasha Mosque in Damascus, Syria.

Book Practical Geometric Pattern Design

Download or read book Practical Geometric Pattern Design written by Mirosław Majewski and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-10 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is third in a series of textbooks on geometric pattern design used at the Istanbul Design Center. It is intended as a tutorial book for 30 hours basic course on geometric patterns in Islamic arts. The content of this book covers some major areas of geometric pattern design. In chapter 2 we discuss how one can approach a complex geometric pattern. It is the most important part in understanding the general structure of any pattern. In chapter 3 we discuss and experiment with patterns built on triangular grids and square grids. This is the simplest group of geometric patterns and usually neglected. In chapters 4 and 5 we deal with 6 and 12 fold patterns. These are the patterns with local symmetries D6 and D12. Usually, we refer to them as hexagonal and dodecagonal patterns. In chapters 6 and 7 we discuss octagonal patterns. Here we also briefly discuss differences between eastern (Central Asia and India) and western octagonal patterns (Morocco and Spain). Finally, in chapter 8 we discuss briefly decagonal patterns, i.e. patterns with D10 local symmetries. More about decagonal patterns readers can find in two other books published by Istanbul Design Publishing in 2019.

Book excerpt: Geometric Computation: Foundations for Design describes the mathematical and computational concepts that are central to the practical application of design computation in a manner tailored to the visual designer. Uniquely pairing key topics in code and geometry, this book develops the two key faculties required by designers that seek to integrate computation into their creative practice: an understanding of the structure of code in object-oriented programming, and a proficiency in the fundamental geometric constructs that underlie much of the computational media in visual design.

Book Islamic Geometric Patterns

Download or read book Islamic Geometric Patterns written by Jay Bonner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this unique book is an in-depth examination of the polygonal technique; the primary method used by master artists of the past in creating Islamic geometric patterns. The author details the design methodology responsible for this all-but-lost art form and presents evidence for its use from the historical record, both of which are vital contributions to the understanding of this ornamental tradition. Additionally, the author examines the historical development of Islamic geometric patterns, the significance of geometric design within the broader context of Islamic ornament as a whole, the formative role that geometry plays throughout the Islamic ornamental arts (including calligraphy, the floral idiom, dome decoration, geometric patterns, and more), and the underexamined question of pattern classification. Featuring over 600 beautiful color images, Islamic Geometric Patterns: Their Historical Development and Traditional Methods of Con struction is a valuable addition to the literature of Islamic art, architecture and geometric patterns. This book is ideal for students and scholars of geometry, the history of mathematics, and the history of Islamic art, architecture, and culture. In addition, artists, designers, craftspeople, and architects will all find this book an exceptionally informative and useful asset in their fields. Jay Bonner is an architectural ornamentalist and unaffiliated scholar of Islamic geometric design. He received his MDes from the Royal College of Art in London (1983). He has contributed ornamental designs for many international architectural projects, including the expansion of both the al-Masjid al-Haram (Grand Mosque) in Mecca, and the al-Masjid an Nawabi (Prophet’s Mosque) in Medina, as well the Tomb of Sheikh Hujwiri in Lahore, and the Ismaili Centre in London – to name but a few. He is committed to the revitalization of Islamic geometric design through the teaching of traditional methodological practices. To this end, in addition to publishing, Jay Bonner has lectured and taught design seminars at many universities and conferences in North America, Europe, North Africa and Asia.

Book Geometric Symmetry in Patterns and Tilings

Download or read book Geometric Symmetry in Patterns and Tilings written by C E Horne and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-10-23 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encompasses a wide range of mathematical concepts relating to regularly repeating surface decoration from basic principles of symmetry to more complex issues of graph theory, group theory and topology. It presents a comprehensive means of classifying and constructing patterns and tilings. The classification of designs is investigated and discussed forming a broad basis upon which designers may build their own ideas. A wide range of original illustrative material is included. In a complex area previously best understood by mathematicians and crystallographers, the author develops and applies mathematical thinking to the context of regularly repeating surface-pattern design in a manner accessible to artists and designers. Design construction is covered from first principles through to methods appropriate for adaptation to large-scale screen-printing production. The book extends mathematical thinking beyond symmetry group classification. New ideas are developed involving motif orientation and positioning, including reference to a crystal structure, leading on to the classification and construction of discrete patterns and isohedral tilings.Designed to broaden the scope of surface-pattern designers by increasing their knowledge in otherwise impenetrable theory of geometry this 'designer friendly' book serves as a manual for all types of surface design including textiles, wallpapers and wrapping paper. It is also of value to crystallographers, mathematicians and architects.

Book Best Practice in Islamic Geometric Design

Download or read book Best Practice in Islamic Geometric Design written by Eric Broug and published by Broug Ateliers Ltd. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn from 1,400 years of design excellence? What rules and conventions have guaranteed consistent quality for centuries across the Islamic world? Eric Broug looks at a wide range of visual evidence and codifies these rules: he reveals the design practices of traditional builders: how to scale a composition, how to create an engaging composition, how to innovate etc. This book shows how it was done, it shows how to apply best practice now, and it shows the most common problems in contemporary Islamic geometric design, and how to avoid them.
