La geometría constituye una de las más antiguas ciencias, ocupándose inicialmente del estudio de las figuras geométricas en el plano o el espacio (puntos, rectas, planos, curvas, superficies, etc). Pero la geometría ha evolucionado y se ha desarrollado de una manera extraordinaria, especialmente a partir del siglo XIX con el desarrollo de sistemas coherentes de geometría no euclídea. Otro impulso esencial vino motivado por la aparición de los computadores, lo que propició el desarrollo de la geometría algorítmica o computacional. No cabe la menor duda de que la geometría es básica para entender el Universo, como Galileo proclamaba hace ya bastantes siglos. Sin embargo, no es menos cierto que la geometría constituye, en la actualidad, una herramienta fundamental para científicos, arquitectos e ingenieros. Este texto está dirigido a los estudiantes de primer curso de cualquier grado científico-técnico y, en particular, a los que cursan cualquier Ingeniería. No se ha pretendido escribir un tratado completo sobre la geometría moderna, sino una introducción amena y comprensible a tan vasto campo. Se ha puesto especial énfasis en subrayar las aplicaciones prácticas de los distintos conceptos o destrezas estudiadas, así como en la visualización gráfica de los procedimientos geométricos que así lo permitían. La introducción de la tecnología en las clases de geometría en los distintos ámbitos educativos, no solo hace más asequible el aprendizaje de muchos conceptos, también faculta a los estudiantes a descubrir otras relaciones geométricas utilizando las herramientas tecnológicas disponibles en la actualidad. En el texto encontramos enlaces a construcciones geométricas, realizadas con GeoGebra, que el lector puede descargar y manipular libremente.

Construction in hewn stone requires the use of geometrical methods and tools to assure that individual stones, either blocks or voussoirs, fit with one another and conform to the general shape of walls, arches or vaults. During the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, such techniques and instruments were developed empirically by masons and architects. Later on, learned mathematicians and engineers introduced refinements in these procedures and this branch of knowledge, known as stereotomy, furnished much material to descriptive geometry, a science born with the French Revolution which provided the foundation for projective geometry.
