Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology With this keynote in mind, the attempt is made throughout the book to keep to matters that have a direct bearing on geologic history. The authors consider it a mistake to use the limited space in an ele mentary text for the exposition of scientific matters not directly a part of geology, however interesting they may be in themselves. For this reason the discussion of weather, of which at best only a smattering can be given in a geologic text, has been abandoned. Similarly a detailed discussion of the mechanics of glacier motion, which has inherent inter est but is not essential to an understanding of land sculpture by glaciers, is dispensed with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology, Vol. 1: Physical Geology The Science of Geology, though barely yet a century old, covers already so wide a field, and takes in such a diversity of subjects, that few, if any, men can hope thoroughly to master the whole of it. Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphical Geology, Terrestrial Cosmogony, Palaeontology, and other lines of research, though they may fairly be looked upon as subdivisions of Geology, are fast becoming separate Sciences. But while it has become almost an absolute necessity for most Geologists to concentrate their attention on some one department of the science and be content with a less perfect grasp of the rest, there is yet a certain basis or groundwork, with which every one who meddles with Geology, whatever be the branch to which he specially devotes himself, must be acquainted if his work is to be sound. For want of a knowledge of this groundwork the Petrologist, looking merely to chemical and mineralogical composition, classes together rocks which differ totally in their origin or manner of occurrence the Palaeontologist pure and simple is apt to force into an unnatural connection, on account of similarity in fossils, formations which physical evidence shows ought to be kept widely apart; the Field Geologist is content with tracing boundaries on his map, and forgets to ask himself how his lines were produced and what they mean. Book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Manual of Geology Vol 1 of 2 written by John Phillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 1 of 2: Theoretical and Practical From the days when Geology began to develop into an exact science, the student has been encountered by guides in the form of books, of two kinds; one promising to "lead him the sweetest and easiest way;" the other demonstrating that "of things good and beautiful, the Gods give nothing to men without great toil." The earlier writers gathered facts from too wide a field to demonstrate the steps of geological evolution. In the words of Professor Suess: "It is an exceedingly difficult task to teach a science well, which grows as rapidly as ours. The difficulty is not caused by the enormous yearly increase of new observations, because this may be overcome by patience, and by a diligent study of every good memoir. But I find that many of our best men go wrong in hanging to details, and losing sight of the grand features of science, or in proclaiming popular theories, and forgetting the painful arts of observation amidst the applause of a short-sighted crowd." The difficulty of teaching has also been the difficulty of text-book writing. And among the few works which have aspired to achieve a noble ideal, probably the most honoured place must be given to the Manual of Professor John Phillips. As the nephew of William Smith, he knew the history and growth of geological ideas as well as facts; and as a public teacher was not unmindful of the aspects of geology which are of vital importance in unfolding thought and imagination for the learner. Al though the pages after the first two hundred differ slightly in the present edition, they are not so much altered as to render it difficult to refer to them. I subjoin a list of the most important points on which I have introduced new information in the present edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Geology, Vol. 3 Now, what is the meaning of these great types of structure; why are there four, and no more or no less; and what is their rank in the scale of perfection of animal life To answer these questions, we must remember that the structure is but the expression of the life-functions for which the organs are made; and a closer examination will convince us that each archetype has a predominant life-function which determines its special form and the character of its physiological life. It will be seen, also, that each archetype corresponds to one of the fundamental functions of life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Geology, Vol. 1 Circumstances have made it necessary to publish the earlier chapters of this work separately, while the later portion is still appearing in the pages of the Quarry. To those who may read the following pages I would, therefore, point out that these preliminary chapters scarcely give an adequate idea of the scope of the completed work. The scarcity of books dealing with the practical side of geology has been long feI lay no claim to any originality, and have freely used all available sources of information as to the facts recorded in this volume. A more complete acknowledgment of these sources will be published at the conclusion of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Geology, Vol. 1: For Use in Universities Colleges, Schools of Science, Etc;, And for the General Reader Geology is essentially an historical science in that it continually seeks to determine the origin of things and the changes which they have experienced. The documents upon which the history is based are written in the rocks of the earth itself and the forms Of its surface features; they present a series Of incontrovertible records, and, if we would read this history, it is our part to learn to decipher the records correctly. Much of this has been done, but much also remains to be done; it is the aim of this work to present a general account of what has been accomplished. Many writers define Geology as a history Of the earth and its inhabitants, as Shown by the record in the rocks. Download or read book A Comprehensive Geology Vol 1 written by Amadeus William Grabau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 886 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comprehensive Geology, Vol. 1: General Geology The study of elastic rocks per se, treated in Chapter XVIII, may again be carried on in the laboratory during the simultaneous treat ment of the forces which produce them and the phenomena of weather ing, erosion, transportation, and deposition (chapters XV - XVII) in the classroom and field. Although I do not Suggest that these subjects be entirely ignored during the earlier part of the course, where the teacher may point out phenomena of weathering, stream and wave erosion, etc., especially during field exercises, I believe that systematic study is most satisfactorily deferred until non-clastic rocks, igneous phenom ena, and other forces which produce material from which clastic rocks may in the first place be derived, have been considered. Other teachers may not agree with me and they may find it desirable to transpose the chapters. I have endeavored so to arrange the chapters that little if anything will be lost in effectiveness by their transposition, and to this end I have given repeated cross references. Therefore if the teacher so desires, he may pass from Chapter III directly to Chapter XV, taking up the intervening chapters In any order he deems fit. I believe, however, that most teachers will agree with me that the broader subject of the sculpturing of the lands (chapters XXII - XXIII, the essentially physiographic chapters) are best treated after, not only the formation and original structural characters of the earth's crust, but also its deformations have been studied. Although metamorphism by Igneous contact has been treated in connection with the igneous phenomena, where it belongs, the main subject of metamorphism and metamorphic rocks (chapter XX) follows the treatment of deforma tions (chapter XIX) and may likewise be treated largely as a labo ratory text.
