Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book Cretaceous and Eocene Decapod Crustaceans from Southern Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada

Download or read book Cretaceous and Eocene Decapod Crustaceans from Southern Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada written by Carrie Ellen Schweitzer and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large collection of fossil decapod crustaceans from Cretaceous and Eocene rocks of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, has yielded a remarkably diverse fauna. The Cretaceous decapod fauna, including previously described and new taxa, contains 17 genera in 14 families, represented by as many as 22 species. The Eocene fauna is less robust, with 7 species and 6 genera in 6 families. This publication includes one new family; three new genera; eight new species; and nine new combinations.

Book Geology of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Geology of the Pacific Northwest written by William N. Orr and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geologic history of the Pacific Northwest is as unique as the region itself. Completely reorganized and revised, the Third Edition of Geology of the Pacific Northwest brings the area’s volcanism, earthquakes, tsunamis, and geologic environmental issues into sharp focus. William and Elizabeth Orr provide a singular perspective and explore the Pacific Northwest writ large, including Southeast Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and northern California. Descriptive and detailed photographs of the formations and terranes of each subregion are included, along with color plates that illuminate and expose the fundamental processes that shaped Pacific Northwest geology. The text reveals the geological origins, geographic features, phenomena, and natural resources of areas throughout the region. As urban development continues to expand in the tectonically active Pacific Northwest, environmental concerns and geologic hazards will grow more and more important. The authors’ central theme that continental plate tectonics are the fundamental processes of Northwest geologic history leads to deeper understanding of the region’s geology and new insights in volcanic eruption prediction, disaster preparedness, and the environmental effects of mining.

Book Petroleum Resource Potential of Sedimentary Basins on the Pacific Margin of Canada

Download or read book Petroleum Resource Potential of Sedimentary Basins on the Pacific Margin of Canada written by P. K. Hannigan and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report assesses the oil & gas resource potential in the Cenozoic and Mesozoic strata of the three major sedimentary basins of the Pacific margin of Canada: the Tofino, Queen Charlotte, and Georgia basins. Ten conceptual petroleum plays are defined on the basis of various geological controls, with most plays identified from stratigraphic considerations. Once defined, the ten plays are each statistically analyzed to estimate their hydrocarbon resource potential. Total potential & field sizes quoted in the report are all median value estimates of in-place hydrocarbon volumes.

Book Mineralogy and Geology of Natural Zeolites

Download or read book Mineralogy and Geology of Natural Zeolites written by Fred A. Mumpton and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 4 of Reviews in Mineralogy was prepared to serve as notes for a short course on the Mineralogy and Geology of Natural Zeolites held in Seattle, Washington, November 4-6, 1977. The title of the short course reads Natural Zeolites; however, the subject matter treated in the course and reviewed here deals primarily with those zeolites that occur in sedimentary rocks and which have formed by authigenic or burial diagenetic processes. Unfortunately, only limited coverage has been given to the classical occurrences of zeolites--the megascopic crystals in the vugs and cavities of basalts and other basic igneous rocks. Our only justification is that since the late 1950s, almost all major efforts on zeolites have been directed towards the "sedimentary" occurrences, and it is these occurrences of zeolites in sedimentary rocks that are still unfamiliar to many geologists and mineralogists. It is our intention that this short course and these notes will play a small role in alleviating this unfamiliarity.
