This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geology and Ore Deposits of the Virgilina District of Virginia and North Carolina In order to insure uniformity for the district as a whole, the same geologist, Doctor Francis B. Laney, was employed by the Virginia and North Carolina Geological Surveys to make the survey in the two states under the general supervision of the State Geologists of Virginia and North Carolina. Doctor Laney was assisted in the field work in North Carolina for a part of the time by Doctor Joseph E. Pogue, of the North Carolina Geological and Economic Survey; and, in Virginia, by Mr. Joel H. Watkins, of the Virginia Geological Survey. The investigation covers an area of approximately 550 square miles, including parts of Charlotte, Halifax, and Mecklenburg counties, Virginia, and parts of Granville and Person counties, North Carolina. Chapter I gives a short but concise geographic sketch of the district, including loca tion, topography, drainage, soil, and climate, closing with a complete account of previous geologic work in the district in the form chiefly of an annotated bibliography. Chapters II and III discuss the general geology of the district and give a detailed description and classification of the rocks, their structure and metamorphism. Chapter IV comprises a detailed description of the veins and ores, in which the mineralogy of the ore and gangue minerals is fully described, and the relations of the copper-bearing sulphides to each other and the origin and deposition of the ores are dis cussed. Chapter V, entitled, The Mines and Ores of the Virgilina District, gives a full description of the individual mines and prospects. Book The Clay Deposits of the Virginia Coastal Plain Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Clay Deposits of the Virginia Coastal Plain Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ries and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Clay Deposits of the Virginia Coastal Plain The present volume forms Bulletin No. II of the series of reports issued on the economic geology of Virginia, under the cc-operation of the State Board of Agriculture and the Board of Visitors of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute. This report is based on field work carried on during the sum mer of 1905. The investigation was limited to the clays of the Coastal Plain Area or the Tidewater Belt of Virginia. Beginning with the next field season, it is expected that this work will be extended as rapidly as possible to all portions of the State and, when completed, a final volume will be issued on the clays and clay industry of the entire State. The investigation of the Virginia clays was undertaken for the purpose of determining (1) the extent, qualities, and applicability of the clays; and (2) whether the clays now being utilized could be used for making other or better products than are now being made from them. This is fully covered for the Coastal Plain clays in the summary given by Dr. Ries under Clay Working Industry of the Virginia Coastal Plain and Its Future Tendency, on pages 175 and 176 of this report, to which the reader is especially referred. In the prosecution of the field work a large number of samples of the clays were collected from the various deposits and submit ted to careful chemical and physical investigation, the results of which are given in Part II, Chapter V of this report. The Geology of the Virginia Coastal Plain, by Dr. Wm. Bullock Clark and Dr. Benjamin leroy Miller, forms Part I of the report. It is a brief summary of our present knowledge of the Vir ginia Coastal Plain stratigraphy, and was prepared to be used as a basis or guide in the correlation of the various clay deposits de scribed by Dr. Ries in Part II, Chapter V. A report, treating in considerable detail of the Virginia Coastal Plain stratigraphy, prepared under the direction of Dr. Clark, is nearly completed and will be published as a separate report by the Virginia Survey. Book Geology and Mineral Deposits of the James River Roanoke River Manganese District Virginia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geology and Mineral Deposits of the James River Roanoke River Manganese District Virginia Classic Reprint written by Gilbert H. Espenshade and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Deposits of the James River-Roanoke River Manganese District, Virginia Barite was mined between 1874 and 1935; about a dozen deposits are known. The Hewitt mine near Evington, which was closed down in 1935, was the largest producer in the state. Recorded production Of Campbell County for the period 1911 - 1935, inclusive, amounted to short tons of barite, much Of which apparently came from the Hewitt mine. The potential reserves Of barite in the district are difficult to appraise. Reserves in known deposits appear to be small, but it is possible that deposits comparable in size to the Hewitt deposit await discovery. Copper ore is reported to have been mined in the Glades, Amherst County, and along Wreck Island Creek, Appomattox County, before the Revolutionary War. Work was done later in the Glades area and also at the Old Bishop mine in Campbell County. Recorded production of copper ore from the district amounts to 15 tons, which was shipped from the Glades in 1880. Reserves of copper ore are judged to be insignificant. Stone has been quarried at numerous places over a period of many years. White and blue marbles have been used mostly for making agricultural lime, as flux in the Old iron furnaces, and in masonry construction, quartzite, green stone, and Lynchburg gneiss have been quarried mainly for railroad and high way ballast, and for construction purposes. White marble and quartzite have been quarried in recent years in two quarries operated by the State, and could be quarried from other sites on a more extensive scale. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rutile and Ilmenite Placer Deposits: Roseland District, Nelson and Amherst Counties, Virginia Figure 1. - Index map of Virginia showing the Roseland district (shown by solid area). Saprolite 1 deposits containing ilmenite were first mined along the Piney River in 1930 by the Vanadium Corp. Of America (fish, 1962, p. The properties of this company were acquired in 1944 by the American Cyanamid co. To supply ilmenite for a new pigment plant at Piney River. Currently, American Cyanamid is the only active producer of titanium minerals in the district. Ilmenite and rutile-bearing saprolite deposits within only a small part Of the area exceed 20 million tons and average percent tioz (fish, Over the entire area, actual saprolite reserves must be several orders Of magnitude greater than this figure. Considering the great abundance Of easily recoverable titanium minerals in saprolite, perhaps even higher grade deposits may have been produced by the winnowing action of streams in the area. To test this possibility, W. C. Overstreet and Norman Herz made a reconnaissance study of the district in March 1968, and 31 panned concentrates were collected from streams draining the area. Heavy liquid and magnetic separation, screen analysis, and X-ray and petrographic analyses were carried out on the panned concentrates at a us. Geological Survey laboratory in Washington, DC. Download or read book Geology of the Gold Belt in the James River Basin Virginia Classic Reprint written by Stephen Taber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of the Gold Belt in the James River Basin Virginia The field studies which form the basis of this report were made by the writer during June, July, and August, 1910, and July and part Of August, 1911. N O attempt has been made to evaluate individual mines or to determine whether they can be Operated at a profit, as that is properly the work of the consulting mining engineer and geologist; but such basic problems as the origin and distribution Of the ore deposits, and their probable variation in depth - problems which can not be solved by the examination of a Single property, Or without the expenditure Of much time and effort - have been investigated as fully as conditions would permit. Acknowledgments - The writer desires to thank Dr. Thomas L. Watson, State Geologist, under whose supervision the work was done, for the privilege of studying the area, and for his valuable advice and kindly assistance in the preparation Of this report. He also wishes to acknowledge the many kindnesses shown him by the different operators in the district, and by others who aided him in the field investigations.
