Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook details 100 walking routes around Ben Nevis and Glen Coe, centred in 10 areas including Fort William and Glen Nevis, the Aonachs, the Mamores, Kinlochleven, Glen Coe, Glen Etive, Black Mount and Ben Cruachan. Routes are graded according to difficulty, and range between short, easy strolls and long, challenging walks with overnight bothy stays. The region's 44 Munro summits are covered, including 2 easy scrambles and the formidable traverse of Aonach Eagach's iconic jagged ridge. Alongside step-by-step route descriptions and mapping, the guide presents practical advice on transport, access, safety and where to stay plus background information on the area's fascinating geology. Many of the routes reflect the author's belief that the best rewards often lie off the popular tourist trails. Yet the highlights are all there: Buachaille Etive Mor, Aonach Eagach, the Mamores, the Grey Corries, Bidean nam Bian, Ben Starav, Carn Mor Dearg and of course, the mighty Ben Nevis. The book - like Glen Coe itself - encourages exploration and includes a helpful 'summit summary' to show different options and assist with route-planning.

Book Landscapes and Landforms of Scotland

Download or read book Landscapes and Landforms of Scotland written by Colin K. Ballantyne and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an appealing and informative overview of the outstanding landforms and landscapes of Scotland. Scotland is internationally renowned for the diversity of its geology, landforms and landscapes. The rock record spans most of geological time, from the Archaean to the Palaeogene, and represents the outcome of tectonic plate movements, associated geological processes, and sea-level and climate changes. Scotland incorporates primeval gneiss landscapes, the deeply eroded roots of the Caledonian mountain chain, landscapes of extensional tectonics and rifting, and eroded remnants of volcanic complexes that were active when the North Atlantic Ocean opened during the Palaeogene. The present relief reflects uplift and deep weathering during the Cenozoic, strongly modified during successive episodes of Pleistocene glaciation. This striking geodiversity is captured in this book through 29 chapters devoted to the evolution of Scotland’s scenery and locations of outstanding geomorphological significance, including ancient palaeosurfaces, landscapes of glacial erosion and deposition, evidence of postglacial landscape modification by landslides, rivers and wind, and coastal geomorphology. Dedicated chapters focus on Ice Age Scotland and the associated landscapes, which range from alpine-type mountains and areas of selective glacial erosion to ice-moulded and drift-covered lowlands, and incorporate accounts of internationally renowned sites such as the ‘Parallel Roads’ of Glen Roy, the Cairngorm Mountains and the inselbergs of Assynt. Other chapters consider the record of postglacial rock-slope failures, such as the famous landslides of Trotternish on Skye, and the record of fluvial changes since deglaciation. The sea-level history of Scotland is addressed in terms of its raised and submerged shorelines, while several chapters discuss the contrasting coastal landscapes, which range from the spectacular sea cliffs of Shetland and Orkney to the beaches and dunes of eastern Scotland. The role of geoconservation in preserving Scotland’s outstanding geomorphological heritage is outlined in the final chapter. The book offers an up-to-date and richly illustrated reference guide for geomorphologists, other Earth scientists, geographers, conservationists, and all those interested in geology, physical geography, geomorphology, geotourism, geoheritage and environmental protection.

Book excerpt: The best mountain, crag, sea cliff and sport climbing in Scotland. From the Foreword by Hamish MacInnes . "If you have an ambition to do all the climbs in these two Scottish Rock guides I think you'd better schedule time off in your next life. This labour of Gary's has been of gargantuan proportions. Those of you who use the guides will benefit by his dedication and the sheer choice offered; if you divide the retail price of these by the number of good routes you'll realise this is a bargain. Volume 1 covers a proliferation of Scottish crags up to the natural demarcation of the Great Glen. They are easier to access than most in Volume 2 and present infinite variety. I have been a long-time advocate of selected climbs and the use of photographs to illustrate both climbs and action. I'm glad that this principle has been used throughout these two volumes. It gives you a push to get up and do things. The list seems endless and if you succeed in doing half of them you'll be a much better climber and know a lot more about Scotland - have a good decade!"

Book excerpt: Introductory work on geological maps by Gertrude Elles (1872-1960), one of Britain's first professional female geologists and university lecturers. In the introduction, Elles writes that this volume is "based mainly upon the notes for a course of lectures and practical work given to many successive generations of Girton and Newnham students. I was asked to put the subject matter into the form of a book in order that it might be available for other students of Geology."

Book Igneous Rocks A Classification and Glossary of Terms

Download or read book Igneous Rocks A Classification and Glossary of Terms written by R. W. Le Maitre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-13 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of field and microscope studies, and more recent quantitative geochemical analyses have resulted in a vast, and sometimes overwhelming, array of nomenclature and terminology associated with igneous rocks. This book presents a complete classification of igneous rocks based on all the recommendations of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) Subcommission on the Systematics of Igneous Rocks. The glossary of igneous terms has been fully updated since the first edition and now includes 1637 entries, of which 316 are recommended by the Subcommission. Incorporating a comprehensive bibliography of source references for all the terms included in the glossary, this book is an indispensable reference guide for all geologists studying igneous rocks, either in the field or the laboratory. It presents a standardised and widely accepted naming scheme that will allow geologists to interpret terminology in the primary literature and provide formal names for rock samples based on petrographic analyses. It is also supported by a website with downloadable code for chemical classifications.
