Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Natural Resources of Rutherford County, Tennessee The survey upon which the present report is based was made in in summer of 1915 for the Tennessee Geological Survey and the Department of Agriculture of the University of Tennessee. The survey was conducted by the writer in association with Mr. H. N. Coryell, of Indiana University, to whom he is especially indebted for efficient assistance. The mapping of the areal geology of that part of the county included in the Woodbury quadrangle, an area of 62 square miles, was done by Dr. E. 0. Ulrich and Dr. R. S. Bassler, of the U. S. Geological Survey, in the summer of 1908. The base map for the parts of the county included in the Murfreesboro, Woodbury, Hollow Springs, and Nashville quadrangles was surveyed by the U. S. Geological Survey. The remainder of the county was surveyed, for the base map, by Mr. Fred Maloney and Mr. G. M. Ferris, of Knoxville, Tenn., in the summer of 1915. Acknowledgment is also due to the late Dr. A. H. Purdue, State Geologist of Tennessee, for his hearty co-operation; to Dr. E. O. Ulrich for his services in the identification of the geologic formations, and to Mr. C. A. Malott for valuable assistance in the interpretation of the physiographic history of the county. The purposes of the survey were: (1) to determine the natural resources of the county; (2) to gather data for a detailed study of the geology; and (3) to furnish a basis for the study of the soil, in an endeavor to increase its productivity and to reclaim waste land. The soil survey is not yet completed. A report on the paleontology of the Stones River group is being prepared by Mr. H. N. Coryell.
