Book excerpt: Unusually high temperatures in 1998 in the Mackenzie Delta and Yukon coast regions prompted an investigation of the short-term response of permafrost to this warming. This paper describes an investigation that compared ice wedge characteristics from Richards Island and the Yukon coast with those from previous studies. Field observations from active-layer monitoring in the Richards Island and Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula area, and historical trends in air temperatures, are also interpreted relative to data from 1998.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a determination of the evolution characteristics of a set of shale pore-structure components (storage porosity, connecting porosity, flow path size, and flow path density) with compaction. The pore-structure component data are derived from bulk petrophysical data (permeability, porosity, and formation factor as a function of increased pressure) reported for seven shale & mudstone samples. Basic pore-structure models and theory are also presented.

Book excerpt: Initial assessment and visual communication of the salient features of large sets of geochronological age data are commonly achieved with binned frequency histograms or probability density distributions. This paper describes the mathematical basis of traditional binned frequency histograms and probability density distributions, then compares & contrasts the advantages & limitations of both methods for displaying absolute age data. Important points related to the use of these diagrams as the principal means of communication of such data are noted.

Book excerpt: Presents results of 1999 field studies focusing on the structure & stratigraphy within the Wallace Lake greenstone belt of east central Manitoba. The stratigraphic results involve redefinition of some of the sequences previously described in the belt and the introduction of new stratigraphic nomenclature. The nature of the contact between stratigraphic assemblages, and the internal stratigraphy of these assemblages, is then presented. This is followed by a discussion of the stratigraphic position of various komatiitic units found in the belt. The final sections describe the geochemistry of the volcanic rocks and the structural history of the greenstone belt.

Book excerpt: This paper reports on a part of the study of the Goldcorp high-grade zone at the Red Lake gold mine, northern Ontario that carried out fluid inclusion microthermometric analyses on a few key samples representing different stages of gold mineralization. The purpose of the study is to provide an initial idea regarding the fluid characteristics before, during, & after the gold mineralization in order to better understand how the deposit was formed and to contribute to the ongoing debate on its genesis. Fluid inclusions were studied from three different mineral phases: pre-ore carbonate, syn-ore quartz, and post-ore euhedral quartz & associated carbonate. The paper reviews the regional & local geologic setting, the petrography of the samples studied, and the study methods employed, and interprets the microthermometric data with discussion of fluid immiscibility, temperature-pressure conditions of carbonate vein formation & silicification, temperature-pressure conditions of euhedral quartz formation, and the evolution of fluid composition.

Book excerpt: The Quilchena fossil site in the Okanagan Highlands of south central British Columbia is a rich repository of Eocene plant, insect, & fish fossils. Reliable age assignment of this site is critical in order to reconstruct the biogeographic, climatic, & evolutionary relationships between the flora & fauna of the Okanagan Highlands and those of other Tertiary sites around the world. Previous radiometric age determinations have been variable and inconclusive. This paper presents new data using uranium-lead dating of zircons from a thick tephra combined with argon-argon dating of sanidine crystals from the same bed. The age determined can be securely ascribed to the Quilchena fossils, since the dated tephra was deposited within the fossil-bearing shale & mudstone sequences.
