Download or read book Groundwater Monitoring Handbook for Coal and Oil Shale Development written by L.G. Everett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1985-07-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standing alone as the main authority on the subject, this handbook is the result of a multi-million dollar investigation into groundwater monitoring strategies at energy extraction sites. It gives a detailed, step-by-step description of a proven groundwater monitoring methodology which can be used at all potential pollution sites. This methodology, developed by the author and a ``blue ribbon'' team of hydrologists and hydrogeologists from all over the United States, is endorsed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as ``establishing the state-of-the-art used by industry today''.Although site-specific data are provided, the handbook is developed for general application to coal and oil shale development. All sources of potential groundwater contamination from these two energy extraction types are identified as part of the overall monitoring strategy. Sampling methods are presented, including well design, monitor well placement, sample collection methods, sampling frequency, sample preservation and handling, selection and preservation of constituents for monitoring, sample analysis, and interpretation of water quality data. A complete review is provided of drill stem steps, dual packer tests, long term pump tests, and single packer tests. In addition, hydraulic methods, the application of geophysical techniques including temperature, caliper, gamma ray, spinner, radioactive tracer, velocity, sonic, density, electric, and seisviewer logs are presented. The use of a chronological series of steps, each being fully developed and extensively referenced, means that it is particularly easy to follow for the reader wishing to establish a groundwater monitoring program at a coal or oil shale site. One of the great advantages of the handbook is that it is very detailed, with actual data provided. The handbook is a must for consulting engineers, coal and oil development companies, government and private environmental groups, institutes and universities involved in pollution studies. It will also undoubtedly be used to good advantage by teachers and students for many different types of courses including geological engineering, coal and oil shale mining, environmental geology, sanitary engineering, hydrogeology, etc.

Download or read book Ordovician Caradoc Marginal Basin Volcanism in Snowdonia north west Wales written by Malcolm Fletcher Howells and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 19th-century controversy and an absence of 100 years, the work of remapping this area of Snowdonia was begun by the Geological Survey who gave special attention to the volcanic rocks of the Ordovician succession. Using the stratigraphy established by the detailed 1:10,000 mapping as a basis, a major geochemical study of the volcanic rocks has been accomplished alongside multi-disciplinary studies of sedimentology, physical volcanology, palaeontology, structure and metamorphism. The great age of this volcanic province, subsequent tectonic events, uplift and erosion have allowed the study to encompass all stages from its birth, through its maturity into its lingering death, in a way that is denied those analyzing younger activity. This book represents an advance in our understanding of volcanic processes in marine environments, acidic ash-flow tuffs in subaerial and subaqueous settings, tectonic controls on volcanism and sedimentation and petrogenetic modelling.

Download or read book Ground Characterization and Structural Analyses for Tunnel Design written by Benjamín Celada and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical and design-oriented book focuses on ground characterization and structural calculation, as part of the active structural design methodology. With a focus on rock tunnelling it offers a comprehensive rather than a topic-based perspective, deriving sound tunnel design criteria and methods from basic principles. Ground characterization includes excavations, site investigation, and in situ stress determination, culminating in geotechnical classifications. The book then deals with various construction methods and their appropriate calculations, which range from constitutive models for the stress-strain behaviour of an excavation and tunnel support elements to a full stress–strain analysis methodology. The heavily practical approach of the book draws on the authors’ twenty years of tunnelling experience in Spain and South America. It will help any young or established professional who wants to develop a career in the underground field across both civil engineering and geology. As it incorporates the very fundamentals of tunneling design, it can be used as a support for tunneling courses or as a textbook for master’s and PhD courses. Benjamín Celada was Chief Tunnel Engineer at Hunosa and Potasas de Navarra S.A. before founding Geocontrol S.A. He has also worked for twenty years as Professor of Underground Works at the Polytechnic Mining University in Madrid, Spain. Z. T. Bieniawski directed the Rock Mechanics Department of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Pretoria, then taught at the Pennsylvania State University for twenty years.
