Download or read book Venus II written by Steven W. Bougher and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 1377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final orbit of Venus by the Magellan spacecraft in October 1994 brought to a close an exciting period of Venus reconnaissance and exploration. The scientific studies resulting from data collected by the Magellan, Galileo, and Pioneer missions are unprecedented in their detail for any planet except Earth. Venus II re-evaluates initial assessments of Venus in light of these and other spacecraft missions and ground-based observations conducted over the past 30 years. More than a hundred contributors summarize our current knowledge of the planet, consider points of disagreement in interpretation, and identify priorities for future research. Topics addressed include geology, surface processes, volcanism, tectonism, impact cratering, geodynamics, upper and lower atmospheres, and solar wind environment. The diversity of the coverage reflects the interdisciplinary nature of Venus science and the breadth of knowledge that has contributed to it. A CD-ROM developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory accompanies the book and incorporates text, graphics, video, software, and various digital products from selected contributors to the text. A multimedia interface allows users to navigate the text and the extensive databases included on the disk. Venus II is the most authoritative single volume available on the second planet. Its contents will not only help shape the goals of future Venus missions but will also enhance our understanding of current Mars explorations.

Book Venus Geology Geochemistry and Geophysics

Download or read book Venus Geology Geochemistry and Geophysics written by Valeriĭ Leonidovich Barsukov and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of more than twenty missions to the planet Venus over the past thirty years, Soviet scientists have amassed a huge database of information on our sister planet. This volume presents major research results in geology, geochemistry, and geophysics from the perspective of comparative planetology, comparing primarily Venus and Earth. The most recent Soviet missions, Venera 15 and 16, provided radar images of the northern hemisphere that have enabled Soviet and U.S. scientists to produce a geologic map of Venus and to interpret the evolution of the planet. The section on geology synthesizes the findings from these missions in a form not to be found in individual scientific articles. The detailed discussions of various surface features, the inclusion of radar images and sketched geological maps for many examples, the thorough tabulation of specific features, and the valuable appendices all constitute important source material which would otherwise be difficult to assemble for most western scientists.

Book The Twin Sister Planets Venus and Earth

Download or read book The Twin Sister Planets Venus and Earth written by Robert J. Malcuit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how it came to be that Venus and Earth, while very similar in chemical composition, zonation, size and heliocentric distance from the Sun, are very different in surface environmental conditions. It is argued here that these differences can be accounted for by planetoid capture processes and the subsequent evolution of the planet-satellite system. Venus captured a one-half moon-mass planetoid early in its history in the retrograde direction and underwent its “fatal attraction scenario” with its satellite (Adonis). Earth, on the other hand, captured a moon-mass planetoid (Luna) early in its history in prograde orbit and underwent a benign estrangement scenario with its captured satellite.

Book Exploring Venus as a Terrestrial Planet

Download or read book Exploring Venus as a Terrestrial Planet written by Larry W. Esposito and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 176. With the search for extra-solar planets in full gear, it has become essential to gain a more detailed understanding of the evolution of the other earth-like planets in our own solar system. Space missions to Venus, including the Soviet Veneras, Pioneer Venus, and Magellan, provided a wealth of information about this planet' enigmatic surface and atmosphere, but left many fundamental questions about its origin and evolution unanswered. This book discusses how the study of Venus will aid our understanding of terrestrial and extra-solar planet evolution, with particular reference to surface and interior processes, atmospheric circulation, chemistry, and aeronomy. Incorporating results from the recent European Venus Express mission, Exploring Venus as a Terrestrial Planet examines the open questions and relates them to Earth and other terrestrial planets. The goal is to stimulate thinking about those broader issues as the new Venus data arrive.

Book Geologic Map of the Aino Planitia Quadrangle V 46 Venus

Download or read book Geologic Map of the Aino Planitia Quadrangle V 46 Venus written by Ellen Renee Stofan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aino Planitia is a lowland region in the southern hemisphere of Venus and is southwest of Thetis Regio in western Aphrodite Terra. It is dominated by low-lying plains units that are characterized by northeast-trending wrinkle ridges and numerous small volcanic edifices, including shields, domes, and cones. The quadrangle contains a major volcano, Kunapipi Mons, and portions of Juno Chasma. A northern extension of the Lada Terra highland is in the southwestern portion of the map. Eight coronae are mapped in the quadrangle, the largest of which is the 500-km-diameter Copia Corona.

Book Volcanism and Tectonism Across the Inner Solar System

Download or read book Volcanism and Tectonism Across the Inner Solar System written by T. Platz and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanism and tectonism are the dominant endogenic means by which planetary surfaces change. This book aims to encompass the broad range in character of volcanism, tectonism, faulting and associated interactions observed on planetary bodies across the inner solar system - a region that includes Mercury, Venus, Earth, the Moon, Mars and asteroids. The diversity and breadth of landforms produced by volcanic and tectonic processes is enormous, and varies across the inner solar system bodies. As a result, the selection of prevailing landforms and their underlying formational processes that are described and highlighted in this volume are but a primer to the expansive field of planetary volcanism and tectonism. This Special Publication features 22 research articles about volcanic and tectonic processes manifest across the inner solar system.
