Book Natural History of the Columbia River Gorge

Download or read book Natural History of the Columbia River Gorge written by Robert Hogfoss and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area encompasses 292,500 acres in an 85-mile run of the Columbia River, beginning at the Sandy River about 17 miles east of Portland, Oregon, extending just beyond the Deschutes River to the east. It is bounded on either side of the river by more than fifty peaks and high points, giving it a fjord-like appearance. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the natural history of the Columbia River Gorge, focusing on its geology, hydrology, geomorphology, weather, plants, animals and people. The beginning of each chapter includes recommended reading, and additional information and references are included throughout the text and in chapter notes. The book is intended to be supplemented with use of the field guides for those who want to learn more about the Gorge’s geology and how to identify its birds, plants and animals. The text helps readers understand how the Gorge was formed, what makes it special, and how people have lived there over time.

Book The Columbia River Flood Basalt Province

Download or read book The Columbia River Flood Basalt Province written by Stephen P. Reidel and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Miocene Columbia River flood basalt province covers ~210,000 km2 of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, and forms part of a larger volcanic region that also includes contemporaneous silicic centers in northern Nevada, the basaltic and time-transgressive rhyolitic volcanic fields of the Snake River Plain and Yellowstone plateau, and the High Lava Plains of central Oregon. The Columbia River flood basalt province is accessible and well exposed, making it one of the best-studied flood basalt provinces worldwide, and it serves as a model for understanding the stratigraphic development and petrogenesis of large igneous provinces through time. This volume details our current knowledge of the stratigraphy and physical volcanology; extent, volume, and age of the lava flows; the tectonic setting and history of the province; the petrogenesis of the lavas; and hydrogeology of the basalt aquifers.

These trips investigate a wide variety of geological and geographical terrains, from the dry steppe of the channeled scablands and Columbia River basalt group to the east, across the glaciated and forested Cascade arc and Coast Mountains, to the geologically complex islands in the west. This guidebook may be unique in that four of the trips utilize boats to reach remote field areas and are therefore rarely visited by geologists.
