Book A Writer s Diary Volume 2

Download or read book A Writer s Diary Volume 2 written by Fyodor Dostoevsky and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 1997-07-20 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the complete collection of writings that has been called Dostoevsky's boldest experiment with literary form; it is a uniquely encyclopedic forum of fictional and nonfictional genres. The Diary's radical format was matched by the extreme range of its contents. In a single frame it incorporated an astonishing variety of material: short stories; humorous sketches; reports on sensational crimes; historical predictions; portraits of famous people; autobiographical pieces; and plans for stories, some of which were never written while others appeared in the Diary itself.

Book Russian Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus Central Asia and Afghanistan Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Russian Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus Central Asia and Afghanistan Illustrated Edition written by Dr. Robert F. Baumann and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 12 maps and 4 tables] In recent years, the U.S. Army has paid increasing attention to the conduct of unconventional warfare. However, the base of historical experience available for study has been largely American and overwhelmingly Western. In Russian-Soviet Unconventional Wars in the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Afghanistan, Dr. Robert F. Baumann makes a significant contribution to the expansion of that base with a well-researched analysis of four important episodes from the Russian-Soviet experience with unconventional wars. Primarily employing Russian sources, including important archival documents only recently declassified and made available to Western scholars, Dr. Baumann provides an insightful look at the Russian conquest of the Caucasian mountaineers (1801-59), the subjugation of Central Asia (1839-81), the reconquest of Central Asia by the Red Army (1918-33), and the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979-89). The history of these wars—especially as it relates to the battle tactics, force structure, and strategy employed in them—offers important new perspectives on elements of continuity and change in combat over two centuries. This is the first study to provide an in-depth examination of the evolution of the Russian and Soviet unconventional experience on the predominantly Muslim southern periphery of the former empire. There, the Russians encountered fierce resistance by peoples whose cultures and views of war differed sharply from their own. Consequently, this Leavenworth Paper addresses not only issues germane to combat but to a wide spectrum of civic and propaganda operations as well.

Book Memory and Commemoration across Central Asia

Download or read book Memory and Commemoration across Central Asia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory and Commemoration across Central Asia: Texts, Traditions and Practices, 10th-21st Centuries is a collection of fourteen studies by a group of scholars active in the field of Central Asian Studies, presenting new research into various aspects of the rich cultural heritage of Central Asia (including Afghanistan). By mapping and exploring the interaction between political, ideological, literary and artistic production in Central Asia, the contributors offer a wide range of perspectives on the practice and usage of historical and religious commemoration in different contexts and timeframes. Making use of different approaches – historical, literary, anthropological, or critical heritage studies, the contributors show how memory functions as a fundamental constituent of identity formation in both past and present, and how this has informed perceptions in and outside Central Asia today.

Book Russia and the Russians

Download or read book Russia and the Russians written by Edmund Noble and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia, in the popular yiew of it, is regarded as a far-away country of but remote interest for all save a few of the western nations with whom it maintains more or less close political relations. We ourselves are apt to think of it, when we give it a thought, in terms of one or other of those conventional judgments which the world at large passes upon communities that from time to time compel its attention, but which it never thoroughly understands. Nor does travel always enlighten us as to the value for our culture processes of a knowledge of this long isolated empire in the European northeast. Extend our journey through Russia as we will, we seem ever to find ourselves in few and poorly developed urban communities, with their increasing proletariat, where poverty, intemperance, and sanitary neglect go hand in hand, and where the distance between the impecunious classes and the rich seems to grow greater year by year; in an empire of peasants where the land yields but a sorry subsistence to the people who cultivate it, -- people in whose minds superstition has more or less usurped the place left vacant by education -- and amid a general population of over a hundred million souls who continue to be held by a church-supported autocracy in a condition of political serfdom. - p. 1-2.
