Until the English edition of Brazil by Pierre Denis was. published (1911), where could be found a real explanation of the geographic provinces of that country? To-day the best work on the Argentine is in French; and the best brief description of the high plateaus of Bolivia and Peru is in German. It is impossible for the busy teacher in the public schools to gather from the best books, even if lists of them were available, the material for good work on the geography of South America. The aim of this little book is to put into convenient form for elementary students some of the material I have gathered during the past ten years of study and travel. It is not a handbook. It does not pretend to cover all parts of the continent in the same detail. I have chosen those subjects that appear to me to be most interesting or most important in the present state of knowledge of South America. No one who writes a book worth reading applies a foot rule to his subject.
