Book The Physical Geography of South America

Download or read book The Physical Geography of South America written by Thomas T. Veblen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Geography of South America, the eighth volume in the Oxford Regional Environments series, presents an enduring statement on the physical and biogeographic conditions of this remarkable continent and their relationships to human activity. It fills a void in recent environmental literature by assembling a team of specialists from within and beyond South America in order to provide an integrated, cross-disciplinary body of knowledge about this mostly tropical continent, together with its high mountains and temperate southern cone. The authors systematically cover the main components of the South American environment - tectonism, climate, glaciation, natural landscape changes, rivers, vegetation, animals, and soils. The book then presents more specific treatments of regions with special attributes from the tropical forests of the Amazon basin to the Atacama Desert and Patagonian steppe, and from the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Pacific coasts to the high Andes. Additionally, the continents environments are given a human face by evaluating the roles played by people over time, from pre-European and European colonial impacts to the effects of modern agriculture and urbanization, and from interactions with El Niño events to prognoses for the future environments of the continent.

Book The Geography of South America

Download or read book The Geography of South America written by Thomas A. Rumney and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South America is an area of fascination and study for geographers and other scholars from around the world, and its land and people have played important roles in the discovery and distribution of civilizations, resources, and nations for millennia. The region has long stimulated a large amount of research across the many subdisciplines of geography, and Thomas A. Rumney collects, organizes, and presents as many scholarly publications as possible in The Geography of South America: A Scholarly Guide and Bibliography. Every South American nation is included: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Beginning with an overview of the region as a whole, successive chapters, one per nation, are divided by specific subdisciplines of geography: cultural, social, economic, historical, physical and environmental, political, and urban. Each section is then divided by document type: atlases, books, book chapters, articles from scholarly journals, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. Although the majority of entries focus on English-language works, selected entries written in Spanish, French, German, and other languages are also included (with the entry titles translated into English and noted accordingly).

Download or read book South America written by Isaiah Bowman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South America: A Geography Reader South America, even more than Africa, has for years been the Dark Continent to the average teacher. Its geographic literature is meager, and much of it is in Spanish, Portuguese, and German. Where can the teacher go for a lively description of the long desert of Atacama? Until the English edition of Brazil by Pierre Denis was. published (1911), where could be found a real explanation of the geographic provinces of that country? To-day the best work on the Argentine is in French; and the best brief description of the high plateaus of Bolivia and Peru is in German. It is impossible for the busy teacher in the public schools to gather from the best books, even if lists of them were available, the material for good work on the geography of South America. The aim of this little book is to put into convenient form for elementary students some of the material I have gathered during the past ten years of study and travel. It is not a handbook. It does not pretend to cover all parts of the continent in the same detail. I have chosen those subjects that appear to me to be most interesting or most important in the present state of knowledge of South America. No one who writes a book worth reading applies a foot rule to his subject. I conceive that an excellent geography of any continent might be written for children which dealt only with houses or dress or villages or roads. No one carries, or indeed could carry, into his maturer years a well-proportioned knowledge of grammar-school subjects. That some knowledge should stick and that it should be sound and important - these are the chief considerations.
