Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geography of Africa The facts recorded have been derived from a variety of sources, including the accounts of the best-known travellers, and papers published in scientific and other periodicals, both - English and foreign. Of works relating to Africa as a whole and general books of reference the following, in par ticular, have been consulted: Mr. A. H. Keane's Africa, in the new issue of Stanford's Compendium; Dr. W. Sievers's Afrika, published by the Leipzig Bibliographical Institute; Mr. Keltie's Partition of Africa, and Statesman's Year-book for 1896; Mr. A. Silva White's Development of Africa, with the series of maps by Mr. Ravenstein; Mr. G. G. Chisholm's Handbook of Commercial Geography, and Longman's Gazetteer; and Mr. Keane's Ethnology in the Cambridge Geographical Series; while for the chapter on the Sahara M. Schirmer's work on that region has been of great assistance, and for South Africa, Professor Wallace's Farming Industries of Cape Colony. Professor Supan's sketch of A Century of Exploration, published in Petermann's Mitteilungen for 1888, also deserves special mention. Much care has been taken to avoid inaccuracies, and it is hoped that any which may have crept in are not serious. Information regarding such will be welcomed. Book The Arabick Interest of the Natural Philosophers in Seventeenth Century England

Download or read book The Arabick Interest of the Natural Philosophers in Seventeenth Century England written by G. A. Russell and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1994 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 'Arabick' Interest of the Natural Philosophers in Seventeenth-Century England" deals with the remarkably widespread interest in Arabic in seventeenth-century England among Biblical scholars and theologians, natural philosophers and Fellows of the Royal Society, and others. It led to the institutionalisation of Arabic studies at Oxford and Cambridge Universities where Arabic chairs were set up, and immense manuscript collections were established and utilised. Fourteen historians examine the extent and sources of this Arabic interest in areas ranging from religion, astronomy, mathematics, medicine, philosophy, philology, and alchemy to botany. Arabic is shown to have been a significant component of the rise of Protestant intellectual tradition and the evolution of secular scholarship at universities.

Book Steven Spielberg and Philosophy

Download or read book Steven Spielberg and Philosophy written by Dean A. Kowalski and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This lively collection of essays on the ideas underpinning his films enriches and enlarges our understanding of Spielberg’s complex body of work.” —Joseph McBride, author of Steven Spielberg: A Biography Few directors have had as powerful an influence on the film industry and the movie-going public as Steven Spielberg. Whatever the subject—dinosaurs, war, extra-terrestrials, slavery, the Holocaust, or terrorism—one clear and consistent touchstone is present in all of Spielberg’s films: an interest in the human condition. In movies ranging from Jaws to Schindler’s List to Amistad to Jurassic Park, he has brought to life some of the most popular heroes—and most despised villains—of all time. In Steven Spielberg and Philosophy, Dean A. Kowalski and some of the nation’s most respected philosophers investigate Spielberg’s art to illuminate the nature of humanity. The book explores rich themes such as cinematic realism, fictional belief, terrorism, family ethics, consciousness, virtue and moral character, human rights, and religion in Spielberg’s work. Avid moviegoers and deep thinkers will discover plenty to enjoy in this collection.
