Download or read book The Natural Environment and the Biogeochemical Cycles written by Otto Hutzinger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Chemistry is a relatively young science. Interest in this subject, however, is growing very rapidly and, although no agreement has been reached as yet about the exact content and limits of this interdisciplinary discipline, there appears to be increasing interest in seeing environmental topics which are based on chemistry embodied in this subject. One of the first objectives of Environmental Chemistry must be the study of the environment and of natural chemical processes which occur in the environment. A major purpose of this series on Environmental Chemistry, therefore, is to present a reasonably uniform view of various aspects of the chemistry of the environ ment and chemical reactions occurring in the environment. The industrial activities of man have given a new dimension to Environ mental Chemistry. We have now synthesized and described over 'five million chemical compounds and chemical industry produces about hundred and fifty million tons of synthetic chemicals annually. We ship billions of tons of oil per year and through mining operations and other geophysical modifications, large quantities of inorganic and organic materials are released from their natural deposits. Cities and metropolitan areas of up to 15 million inhabitants produce large quantities of waste in relatively small and confined areas. Much of the chemical products and waste products of modern society are released into the environment either during production, storage, transport, use or ultimate disposal. These released materials participate in natural cycles and reactions and frequently lead to interference and disturbance of natural systems.
Download or read book Geomedicine 1990 written by Jul Lag and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating work features such topics as the relationships between iodine deficiency and goiter, fluorine deficiency and caries, selenium deficiency and muscular degeneration, mercury surplus and specific nerve diseases, cadmium surplus and kidney failure. This one-of-a-kind volume reveals discoveries which may be of importance in future preventive medicine for man and animals. It shows that the comprehensive progress in chemical analyses has established a valuable basis for determining many environmental features and for the foundation of modern geomedicine. Those involved with geology, soil science, nutrition, biology, veterinary sciences, and prophylactic socio-medical sciences will find this resource indispensable.
Download or read book Manganese in Metabolism and Enzyme Function written by Vern L. Schramm and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manganese in Metabolism and Enzyme Function provides an understanding of the various biological roles of the trace levels of manganese found in mammalian systems. This text discusses the nutritional aspects of manganese in mammals. This book is organized into three sections encompassing 19 chapters. Section I discusses the effects of manganese deficiency, including abnormal pancreatic action and reduced pancreatic manganese in humans and laboratory animals. This text considers the criteria for adding manganese to infant formulas that are commercially available. Section II explores the effects of Mn(II) in protein kinases, protein phosphatases, and other enzymes. The reader is introduced to the electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopic probes of manganese function. Other chapters discuss the extrinsic tag technique used to study the bioavailability of trace elements, such as iron and zinc. Finally, Section III examines the biophysical, biochemical, and physiological properties and uses of manganese. Nutritionists, toxicologists, scientists, and researchers will find this book extremely useful.

Download or read book Inorganic Species Part 1 written by Roger Minear and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inorganic Species, Part 1 separately considers the various inorganic and organic components that occur in water. While this separation is traditional, it does provide some distinct organizational advantages. This is important because of the wide-ranging audience likely to be using these works. Both practicing professionals and students in environmentally related disciplines will find these volumes to be a useful reference source. This book comprises six chapters, and begins with a focus on the origin and nature of selected inorganic constituents in natural waters. Succeeding chapters go on to discuss redox potential, which discusses its measurement and importance in water systems; alkalinity and acidity; conductance, which is defined here as a collective measure of dissolved ions; the theory and measurement of turbidity and residue; and, finally, a summary of methods for water-quality analysis of specific species. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of geology and environmental engineering.
