Book The Geochemistry and Geophysics of the Antarctic Mantle

Download or read book The Geochemistry and Geophysics of the Antarctic Mantle written by A.P. Martin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Memoir is the first dedicated to the Antarctic mantle. It is a cross-disciplinary reference work combining geochemistry and geophysics to characterize Antarctic mantle properties. Through observations and modelling the mantle structures, compositions and dynamics are characterized at regional and continental scales by subject experts. The Memoir reviews all known occurrences of sub-continental mantle xenoliths in igneous rocks. These studies are presented by region as southern or northern Victoria Land, Marie Byrd Land, the Antarctic Peninsula, East Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic Islands. Sub-oceanic mantle in tectonically emplaced and abyssal settings is also considered where known. This is complemented by a continental-scale mantle xenolith overview, mantle characteristics from igneous rocks and a quantitative mantle fabric study. State-of-the-art, continental-scale geophysical overviews of the Antarctic mantle are presented by discipline as seismology, gravity and magnetics, magnetotellurics, rheology, glacial isostatic adjustment, mantle convection and palaeotopography. This Memoir will be the reference for all researchers interested in the Antarctic mantle and its role in dynamics that shape the Antarctic surface and ice sheets.

Book Constraints from Mantle Xenoliths on the Geodynamic Evolution of Earth s Upper Mantle

Download or read book Constraints from Mantle Xenoliths on the Geodynamic Evolution of Earth s Upper Mantle written by Benjamin Lee Byerly and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geophysical studies identify a region of slow seismic velocity mantle beneath the central Rio Grande rift that potentially represents a region of hot asthenospheric mantle that has replaced destabilized lithosphere. We determine that the majority of mantle xenoliths from Elephant Butte on the central Rio Grande rift axis are, based on their geochemical affinity to depleted mantle, derived from asthenospheric mantle that has accreted to the base of the Proterozoic lithosphere. Using mantle heat flow models, we estimate the boundary between residual lithosphere and accreted asthenosphere to be at ~45km depth. The amount of lithosphere thinning that has occurred cannot be accounted for by rift-related extension and we therefore suggest that convective removal of a large portion of Proterozoic lithosphere has occurred. Convecting upper mantle-derived peridotites display extreme isotopic depletions that are not observed in mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB). Previous studies suggest that these isotopically ultradepleted domains represent rare refractory mantle domains that do not participate in MORB petrogenesis. We demonstrate the isotopically ultradepleted domains are not only a ubiquitous feature of convecting upper mantle, but are also capable of melting if advected beneath mid-ocean ridges. To explain the lack of MORB with ultradepleted isotopes, we suggest that MORB compositions are biased towards fertile enriched source components. Estimates of upper mantle composition based on MORB therefore overestimate the fertility of the upper mantle. The Lu-Hf system is commonly used to estimate the timing of melt depletion events in the lithospheric mantle. This is typically done with pseudoisochrons from genetically related mantle xenoliths. Most studies, however, misinterpret Lu/Hf - Hf isotopes correlations by using Cpx Lu/Hf ratios when whole rock Lu/Hf ratios are appropriate due to equilibration above the Lu-Hf closure temperature. Hafnium isotopes do not typically correlate with indicators of melt depletion, which suggests that Hf isotopes do not record ancient melting events. This is likely due to overprinting of Hf isotopes by later metasomatic events.

Book Treatise on Geochemistry

Download or read book Treatise on Geochemistry written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-10-19 with total page 14787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively updated new edition of the widely acclaimed Treatise on Geochemistry has increased its coverage beyond the wide range of geochemical subject areas in the first edition, with five new volumes which include: the history of the atmosphere, geochemistry of mineral deposits, archaeology and anthropology, organic geochemistry and analytical geochemistry. In addition, the original Volume 1 on "Meteorites, Comets, and Planets" was expanded into two separate volumes dealing with meteorites and planets, respectively. These additions increased the number of volumes in the Treatise from 9 to 15 with the index/appendices volume remaining as the last volume (Volume 16). Each of the original volumes was scrutinized by the appropriate volume editors, with respect to necessary revisions as well as additions and deletions. As a result, 27% were republished without major changes, 66% were revised and 126 new chapters were added. In a many-faceted field such as Geochemistry, explaining and understanding how one sub-field relates to another is key. Instructors will find the complete overviews with extensive cross-referencing useful additions to their course packs and students will benefit from the contextual organization of the subject matter Six new volumes added and 66% updated from 1st edition. The Editors of this work have taken every measure to include the many suggestions received from readers and ensure comprehensiveness of coverage and added value in this 2nd edition The esteemed Board of Volume Editors and Editors-in-Chief worked cohesively to ensure a uniform and consistent approach to the content, which is an amazing accomplishment for a 15-volume work (16 volumes including index volume)!

Book A Petrological and Geochemical Study of Mantle and Crustal Xenoliths from Lanzarote Canary Islands

Download or read book A Petrological and Geochemical Study of Mantle and Crustal Xenoliths from Lanzarote Canary Islands written by Caitlin Mary Traver and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to evaluate the processes by which ocean island basalt-derived mantle xenoliths are depleted and, in some cases, subsequently re-fertilized using extremely depleted mantle xenoliths from Lanzarote, Canary Islands. New petrography, mineral-chemistry and whole-rock data are reported for>40 Lanzarote xenoliths, ranging from ultra-depleted harzburgites to re-fertilized lherzolites and gabbroic crustal samples. Previous studies of mantle xenoliths from Lanzarote report whole rock and mineral chemistries for only general categories of mantle peridotites, e.g. dunites, protogranular harzburgites and lherzolites, and melt-influenced textured xenoliths. In these studies, there are few detailed textural and chemical sample-specific connections reported. This study investigates and reports on chemistries and textures of individual samples, as they prove to be intrinsically related. These samples come from a total of six separate sampling sites on Lanzarote, representing one of the most comprehensive petrological studies yet performed on xenoliths from any oceanic island. This study focuses on identifying levels of melt depletion and later melt infiltration into mantle xenoliths and to provide a framework for understanding processes acting on the mantle beneath the Canary Islands.

Book Phoscorites and Carbonatites from Mantle to Mine the Key Example of the Kola Alkaline Province

Download or read book Phoscorites and Carbonatites from Mantle to Mine the Key Example of the Kola Alkaline Province written by F. Wall and published by The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoscorites are dark, often very handsome, sometimes economically valuable, magnetite-apatite-silicate rocks, almost always associated with carbonatite. They are key to understanding the longstanding question of how carbonate and carbonate-bearing magmas rise to the crust and the Earths surface. Despite this, they have been given little attention; a search on geological literature databases will produce thousands of references to carbonatite (up to 4125 on Georef) but not more than thirty references to phoscorite. This book goes some way to redress this balance. Over recent years many European and North American scientists have studied Kola rocks in collaboration with Russian colleagues. The idea for this book came from one such project funded by the European organisation, INTAS (Grant No 97-0722). The Kola Peninsula is one of the outstanding areas in the World for the concentration and economic importance of alkaline rocks. However, Russian work on the Kola complexes is still relatively unknown and a particular aim of this book, as well as presenting current research, is to make this knowledge accessible to English language readers. A large exploration programme on Kola alkaline rocks was active from 1950 to 1990 and involved teams of geologists who studied many kilometres of drill core and carried out detailed mineralogical and petrological studies.
