Book The Transformation of the International Order of Asia

Download or read book The Transformation of the International Order of Asia written by Shigeru Akita and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Asia the 1950s were dominated by political decolonization and the emergence of the Cold War system, and newly independent countries were able to utilize the transformed balance of power for their own economic development through economic and strategic aid programmes. This book examines the interconnections between the transfer of power and state governance in Asia, the emergence of the Cold War, and the transfer of hegemony from the UK to the US, by focusing specifically on the historical roles of international economic aid and the autonomous response from Asian nation states in the immediate post-war context. The Transformation of the International Order of Asia offers closely interwoven perspectives on international economic and political relations from the 1950s to the 1960s, with specific focus on the Colombo Plan and related aid policies of the time. It shows how the plan served different purposes: Britain’s aim to reduce India’s wartime sterling balances in London; the quest for India’s economic independence under Jawaharlal Nehru; Japan’s regional economic assertion and its endeavour to improve its international status; Britain’s publicity policy during the reorganization of British aid policies at a time of economic crisis; and more broadly, the West’s desire to counter Soviet influence in Asia. In doing so, the chapters explore how international economic aid relations became reorganized in relation to the independent development of states in Asia during the period, and crucially, the role this transformation played in the emergence of a new international order in Asia. Drawing on a wide range of international contemporary and archival source materials, this book will be welcomed by students and scholars interested in Asian, international, and economic history, politics and development studies.

Book From Revolutionary Cadres to Party Technocrats in Socialist China

Download or read book From Revolutionary Cadres to Party Technocrats in Socialist China written by Hong Yung Lee and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a wide variety of previously unavailable sources, Hong Yung Lee offers a theoretical and historical perspective on China's ruling elite, examining their politics and the bureaucratic system in which they participate. He traces the evolution of these cadres from the guerrilla fighters who first joined the communist movement and founded the new regime in 1949 to the technocratic specialists who wield power today. In the revolution, communist leaders built a peasant-based party organization whose members were largely recruited from uneducated poor peasants and hired laborers. Even after they became the founders of a new regime, their rural orientation and revolutionary experiences continued to affect the political process. Lee shows how the requirements of modernization compelled the state to replace the revolutionary cadres with bureaucratic technocrats. Selected from the postliberation generation, the new leaders are more committed to problem-solving than to socialism. Despite uncertainties in the immediate future, this elite transformation signifies an end to modern China's revolutionary era. Lee argues that it seems only a matter of time before China will have a bureaucratic-authoritarian regime led by technocrats possessing a managerial perspective and a pragmatic economic orientation. Book The Ghost Runner

Download or read book The Ghost Runner written by Bill Jones and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incredible, inspiring, and heartbreaking story of a phenomenal long-distance runner’s race against insurmountable odds and his own demons. John Tarrant was one of the best runners the world has ever seen. With a strange, loping gate and a nearly fanatical determination, he dominated the field and crushed ultra-long distance records for 40 and 100 miles. As a teenage boxer in the 1950s, Tarrant received £17 payment for a match, a pittance that would haunt him for the rest of his life by compromising his amateur athlete status. He would spend his career fighting the rule that banned him from competing, gatecrashing races, and running without a number. Dubbed “the Ghost Runner,” he would again and again defy the odds, making history without officially being recognized for his achievements. This is the captivating story of his lifelong struggle for victory, acceptance, and justice, from his difficult start as a poor child in WWII England to his fight to legitimize interracial races in Apartheid South Africa. Based on accounts from family, friends, and competitors and told with brutal honesty, Bill Jones uncovers one of the greatest untold sports stories of our time and documents the life of a man who simply would not be stopped. “Jones tells the story very well . . . restores his legend while revealing his very human frailties.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: During ""the thaw"" from Stalin's death in 1953 to the late 1960s and Khrushchev's rule, Soviet society experienced major transformations. So did films. In this first comprehensive account of the relationship between politics and cinema in this period, Josephine Woll skillfully interweaves cultural history with film analysis to explore how movies at once responded to the changes around them and helped engender them. She considers dozens of individual films within the context of Khrushchev's policies and the artistic foment they inspired.
