It was written with respect of The Interior Castle, the monumental work written by Teresa of Avila, whose writing is the wellspring that has quenched the thirst of many. It is the foundation from which all other sources have flowedtranslations, meditations, and now this brief book that offers insight from seven reflections. The reflections and landmarks are made by the author on the mansions of The Interior Castle for those who seek to engage in the transformational process of their spiritual pilgrimages. Glimpses are thus caught of the souls journey throughout the interior mansions. Facets of the journey are reflected to engage within the wisdom of Teresas writing that can never be replicated. The intention is for the soul journeyer to grow in the wholeness of mind, body, and soul, as well as in ones own humanness as he or she engages with the rawness of the soul to refine that rawness, to become authentic, and to realize his or her full potential in that search for the divine one within.

Book Conversations with Allen Ginsberg

Download or read book Conversations with Allen Ginsberg written by David Stephen Calonne and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2019-06-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997) was one of the most famous American poets of the twentieth century. Yet, his career is distinguished by not only his strong contributions to literature but also social justice. Conversations with Allen Ginsberg collects interviews from 1962 to 1997 that chart Ginsberg’s intellectual, spiritual, and political evolution. Ginsberg’s mother, Naomi, was afflicted by mental illness, and Ginsberg’s childhood was marked by his difficult relationship with her; however, he also gained from her a sense of the necessity to fight against social injustice that would mark his political commitments. While a student at Columbia University, Ginsberg would meet Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Gregory Corso, and the Beat Generation was born. Ginsberg researched deeply the social issues he cared about, and this becomes clear with each interview. Ginsberg discusses all manner of topics including censorship laws, the legalization of marijuana, and gay rights. A particularly interesting aspect of the book is the inclusion of interviews that explore Ginsberg’s interests in Buddhist philosophy and his intensive reading in a variety of spiritual traditions. Conversations with Allen Ginsberg also explores the poet’s relationship with Bob Dylan and the Beatles, and the final interviews concentrate on his various musical projects involving the adapting of poems by William Blake as well as settings of his own poetry. This is an essential collection for all those interested in Beat literature and twentieth-century American culture.

Book Living Architecture Living Cities

Download or read book Living Architecture Living Cities written by Christopher Day and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-08 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s widely accepted that our environment is in crisis. Less widely recognized is that three quarters of environmental damage is due to cities – the places where most of us live. As this powerful new book elucidates, global sustainability is therefore directly dependent on urban design. In Living Architecture, Living Cities Christopher Day and Julie Gwilliam move beyond the current emphasis on technological change. They argue that eco-technology allows us to continue broadly as before and only defers the impending disaster. In reality, most negative environmental impacts are due to how we live and the things we buy. Such personal choices often result from dissatisfaction with our surroundings. As perceived environment has a direct effect on attitudes and motivations, improving this can achieve more sustainable lifestyles more effectively than drastic building change – with its notorious performance-gap limitations. As it’s in places that our inner feelings and material reality interact, perceived environment is place-based. Ultimately, however, as the root cause of unsustainability is attitude, real change requires moving from the current focus on buildings and technology to an emphasis on the non-material. Featuring over 400 high quality illustrations, this is essential reading for anyone who believes in the value and power of good design. Christopher Day’s philosophy will continue to inspire students with an interest in sustainable architecture, urban planning and related fields.

Book Your Soul s Compass

Download or read book Your Soul s Compass written by Joan Z. Borysenko, Ph.D. and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on spiritual wisdom from sacred texts across a variety of religious traditions, this is an “elegant, simple, and practical guide to get in touch with your higher self” (Deepak Chopra, author of The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success) Why am I here? What does a life worth living look like? What is the higher intelligence trying to express through me? In this time of global change and uncertainty, of spiritual indirection, Americans are asking these age-old questions with renewed curiosity. There’s a thirst for meaning and purpose—a dawning realization that happiness isn’t a commodity that can be bought with a gold card. Fulfillment and joy arise naturally from creative and compassionate action—from the understanding that all life is interconnected and guided by a higher intelligence. Our personal choices make a difference, and when they are spiritually inspired even the smallest action serves a larger whole. Sacred texts ranging from the Torah to the New Testament, the Tao Te Ching to the Buddhist scriptures, the Vedantas to the Koran, speak of making life-enhancing choices where a force greater than the individual flows through us and informs our thoughts and actions. In this book we’ll focus on the three classic aspects of living such a spiritually guided life: (1) alignment: maintaining a direct and personal connection to the Source of our Being; (2) discernment: distinguishing the movement of Spirit in our lives from our own wants, fears and social conditioning; and (3) action: making our best, most inspired contribution to the evolution of life.

Book The Spirit of Understanding

Download or read book The Spirit of Understanding written by Margaret J. Howell and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winning contestants on University Challenge could not identify lines from one of the best-known English poems, Keats Ode to Autumn, and seemed unconcerned about their ignorance. This book provides an engaging retrospect for readers who have forgotten, or who have never had much chance to study, their own literature and history. In presenting a kind of cross-section of this abundant inheritance, it supplies ample selective quotes, and suggests an antidote to the strange sickness of modernity, which seems to have forgotten that memory is the mother of the muses. Literature, one of the bulwarks of defence against unwarranted authority, has been attacked, distorted, and eliminated from curricula because its traditional teachings, handed on for generations, oppose a determined modernist agenda. The age demands conformity ; the poets are independent. The traditional writings banished from shelves and the popular imagination educate the soul, inculcating such qualities as fortitude, one of the forgotten virtues. Criticism of and from the media, the self-appointed commentators who make up the narratives of the day, has been undertaken by analysts as diverse as Noam Chomsky and William Buckley. Some of their works are listed in the bibliography. Myths and heroic tales that inform western literature and adjust our perspective come principally from the Greeks, especially from Homer, and from Vergil, who told the great tale of Troy that fulfilled the dreams of Rome. Homer delighted in the natural world, in beautifully made arms, cups, tapestries, all bathed in a pitiless light. The old Anglo Saxon poets who also wrote in the epic tradition felt particularly the mightiness of evil, the transience of life, and the power of the word to shape the world, and to hold themselves in remembrance. The Middle Ages achieved the greatest dream of all, uniting the mythical with the practical, painting great panoramas of life, meditating upon the unseen, and the Elizabethan age rediscovered heroism and the power of personality. After the free discourse and argument of the seventeenth century, with its resulting wars and fragmentation, a more cohesive nation emerged, one that came to believe in reason and mans own mind ; while the Romantic poets who followed show, sometimes disastrously, the wildness of individualism, of diversity apart from social integration and a common faith. The long Victorian afternoon and golden evening of the nineteenth century saw an expansion of these tendencies and a renewing of faith, but there has been no significant new development from the revolution and romanticism of a century earlier. Rather the movement has played itself out with post modernism.
