Download or read book Fukushi Ito In the space and in the time written by Fukushi Ito and published by Altralinea Edizioni . This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Private Bankers in the Italian 19th Century written by Luciano Maffi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the role of private bankers who were pivotal in modernizing the economic and financial system of Italy in the XIX century. To achieve this they needed to interact with the international haute banque to organize and place the public loans and the large investments associated with the joint-stock companies. The theme of reputation, which is currently at the centre of the historiographical debate, is fundamental for the study of the private banker figures, whose professional success is linked to the limitless trust accorded to them by their circle of personal contacts. Historiography has studied the role of Italian bankers in the trade, credit and international finance during the modern age (XVI-XVIII centuries), but it has not analysed the banking system in the XIX century and its national and international relations. The case study of Banca Parodi of Genova fills the historiographical gap concerning the role of private bankers and banking institutions in Italy, highlighting the network between the Parodi family and the international haute banque; one of the most emblematic cases is the Rothschild family. The book presents a re-elaborates series of unpublished data, placing them at the disposal of the scientific community and analyses the role of private bankers in the development of Italian banking institutions in the XIX century to launch a scientific debate.

Book excerpt: * Takes an interdisciplinary approach to interpreting global civil society * Contributors are some of the leading theoreticians in the field * A sound handbook for activism The term "global civil society" has become a catchphrase of our times. But efforts to define and interpret what global civil society actually is have led to ambiguity and dispute. This major work of scholarship and advocacy pierces through the generalizations and debates. It presents cogent examples of groups within civil society--from the Seattle and Genoa protesters to transnational grassroots movements, such as Slum/Shack Dwellers International--that are creatively meeting the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly interconnected world. The contributors offer clarity and the hope that another world is possible--one in which civil society’s global networks can effectively create a free, fair, and just global order. Scholars, students, and anyone interested in understanding new forces influencing contemporary world politics will want to have this book on their shelves.

Download or read book A Book of Psalms from Eleventh century Byzantium written by Barbara Crostini and published by Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana. This book was released on 2016 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This collection of essays offers new and deeper perspectives on a relatively little-studied manuscript of the Greek Psalter at the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, codex Vaticanus graecus 752. As the title suggests, the perspective of the editors is an inter-disciplinary one. Thus, the volume covers three broad areas: the material aspects concerning the manuscript, the textual contents consisting of Psalms and their catena commentary, and the over two hundred images that illustrate the psalms. Barbara Crostini has been mainly responsible for Parts I-II, and Glenn Peers for Part III, and the writing of this introduction follows this basic division of tasks. Ultimately, however, the editors would like to see these parts not as divided, but as mutually integrated, each providing clues to the major unresolved issues of provenance and production of this codex. Thus, it is capturing the complexity of the interrelationship between these elements in the creation and use of the manuscript that remains our ideal aim.Consider Vat. gr. 752 as a particular edition of the sacred page. As such, it came about and first lived in a specific context. Grasping this reality, though a past and necessarily elusive one, is surely the historian's task, and his/her attempt at doing so is both limited and sharpened by the tools at his/her disposal. The first part of this volume is an attempt to address this historical context."--

Download or read book Latins Greeks and Muslims Encounters in the Eastern Mediterranean 10th 15th Centuries written by David Jacoby and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade, shipping, military conquest, migration and settlement in the eastern Mediterranean of the 10th-15th centuries generated multiple encounters between states, social and 'national' groups, and individuals belonging to Latin Christianity, Byzantium and the Islamic world. The nature of these encounters varied widely, depending on whether they were the result of cooperation, rivalry or clashes between states, the outcome of Latin conquest, which altered the social and legal status of indigenous subjects, or the result of economic activity. They had wide-ranging social and economic repercussions, and shaped both individual and collective perceptions and attitudes. These often differed, depending upon 'nationality', standing within the dominant or subject social strata, or purely economic considerations. In any event, at the individual level common economic interests transcended collective 'national' and cultural boundaries, except in times of crisis. The studies in this latest collection by David Jacoby explore the multiple facets of these eastern Mediterranean encounters and their impact upon individual economic activities, with special attention to the 'other', outsiders in foreign environments, foreign privileged versus indigenous traders, the link between governmental intervention, 'naturalization', and fiscal status, as well as the interaction between markets and peasants.
Download or read book Revolutionary Desire in Italian Cinema written by Luana Ciavola and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2011 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary Desire in Italian Cinema is the first book to draw on psychoanalytical concepts and film theories to examine the critical tendency of Italian cinema and the way in which auteur Italian filmmakers have expressed their counter-ideological thought and criticism against Italian society. The book examines how by being committed to Italian social reality, Italian cinema expresses a desire for revolt against the status quo and the dominant ideological order. Taking as case studies Bernardo Bertolucci’s Prima della rivoluzione, Marco Bellocchio’s I pugni in tasca, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Porcile, Nanni Moretti’s Ecce Bombo and La messa è finita, the book relies on socio-historiographical theories through which Luana Ciavola discusses how plot and characters create a sense of revolt against the both social order and values such as family, religion and bourgeois ethics. The book confirms the central role of Italian cinema in a historical and political context, insofar as it includes a substantial background which highlights aspects of Italian history never considered before in a study on Italian cinema. Revolutionary Desire in Italian Cinema is aimed at academics, researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students and all lovers of Italian cinema.
Download or read book A Window on the Italian Female Modernist Subjectivity written by Rossella M. Riccobono and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays surveys some of the artistic productions by female figures who stood at the forefront of Italian modernity in the fields of literature, photography, and even the theatre, in order to explore how artistic engagement in women informed their views on, and reactions to the challenges of a changing society and a ‘disinhibiting’ intellectual landscape. However, one other objective takes on a central role in this volume: that of opening a window on the re-definition of the subjectivity of the self that occurred during an intriguing and still not fully studied period of artistic and societal changes. In particular, the present volume aims to define a female Italian Modernism which can be seen as complementary, and not necessarily in opposition, to its male counterpart.

Download or read book Guilds Markets and Work Regulations in Italy 16th 19th Centuries written by Alberto Guenzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to provide a conspectus of current research on the history of guilds and corporations in Italy in the period from the Renaissance to the end of the 19th century. Particular aims are to examine the relationship between guilds, manufacturing, entrepreneurship, and economic development, and their impact on urban society and social welfare. The work derives from a major project set up in 1994; the results were discussed at a conference in Rome in September 1997, and formed the basis for a further presentation by Professor Carlo Poni at the 12th International Economic History Conference in Seville. The papers are grouped into three sections, dealing with the guild system in urban areas, case studies of individual guilds and conflicts, and their role in mutual aid and assistance. Specially translated for this volume, they trace for the English-speaking world a rich picture of the history of the Italian guild system in the modern era, and its movement from magnificence to decline.

Download or read book Forcing the Factory of the Future written by Bryn Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-06-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is computerised production transforming work roles, as recent debates about flexible specialisation and post-Fordist manufacturing suggest? This book focuses on the key case of metalworking batch production in Britain, Italy, Japan and the USA. Looking at technological, political and social developments from a comparative perspective, it suggests that comprehensive factory principles never fully replaced workshop organisation. Drawing on empirical case studies of flexible manufacturing systems, Bryn Jones offers a new distinction between the bureaucratic bias of Taylorism and the product standardisation approach of Fordism, and questions whether computerised production is transcending Fordism. Instead of the often predicted models of deskilled, centrally controlled work, or a decentralised craft renaissance, he shows a greater likelihood of national variations between factory and workshop principles continuing into the contemporary age of computerisation.
