This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Genevieve Stebbins System of Physical Training The lessons in Part I. Are an epitome of all psychological physical culture, and, thoroughly carried out in daily life, will transform that life into a healthy and happy one. This system will be found to be progressive, going from the simple to the complex. It is a complete gymnastic system along aesthetic lines and has been elaborated by the author after many years' experience as teacher and director of physical training in the best schools of New York, com bined with a critical study of the carved works of ancient art. Bas-relief, alto-relief and the free figure, in vase, frieze, pillar, and temple, have been the models for much of the work. This, blended with a knowledge of medical gymnastics, makes the author bold enough to think that she is offering something of real value to the teacher and the pupil of physical culture. Download or read book The Cultivation of Body and Mind in Nineteenth Century American Delsartism written by Nancy Ruyter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study chronicles the American adaptation of the theory and practice of the French acting, singing, and aesthetics teacher, Francois Delsarte. Delsartism was introduced in the United States by Steele Mackaye, Delsarte's only American student. American Delsartism, with its emphasis on physical culture and expression, differed significantly from Delsarte's works in France. The system evolved from professional training for actors and orators to a means of physical culture and expression that became popular among middle and upper class American women and girls. It allowed nineteenth-century women to pay attention to their bodies, to explore their own physicality, and to perform in a socially acceptable venues. In its later manifestations, Delsartism influenced the innovative dance of such artists as Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn. Biographical information on the most notable figures in the development of American Delsartism is presented along with a discussion of the spread of Delsartism throughout the United States and to Germany. The Delsartean approach to training and expression is traced from Delsarte and Mackaye through the theory, teaching, and performance of Genevieve Stebbins, the most notable American proponent of the system. This work will appeal to scholars of dance history and of late nineteenth-century women's studies. Theater historians will appreciate the detailed account of the system as developed and taught by Steele Mackaye as training for actors. Although Delsartism has been acknowledged as relevant to the history of modern dance, scant information and research has previously been published which explores the movement in depth and discusses its importance to women's physical and cultural education in nineteenth-century America. Photographs illustrate the text and an extensive bibliography serves as a useful guide for further research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating the Body presents a history of physical education in Canada, shedding light on its major advocates, innovators, and institutions. The book traces the major developments in physical education from the early nineteenth century to the present day – both within and beyond schools – and concludes with a vision for the future. It examines the realities of Canada’s classed, gendered, and racialized society and reveals the rich history of Indigenous teachings and practices that were marginalized and erased by the residential school system. Today, with the worrying decline in physical activity levels across the population, Educating the Body is indispensable to understanding our policy options moving ahead.

Download or read book Rhetoric History and Women s Oratorical Education written by David Gold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of rhetoric have long worked to recover women's education in reading and writing, but have only recently begun to explore women's speaking practices, from the parlor to the platform to the varied types of institutions where women learned elocutionary and oratorical skills in preparation for professional and public life. This book fills an important gap in the history of rhetoric and suggests new paths for the way histories may be told in the future, tracing the shifting arc of women's oratorical training as it develops from forms of eighteenth-century rhetoric into institutional and extrainstitutional settings at the end of the nineteenth century and diverges into several distinct streams of community-embodied theory and practice in the twentieth. Treating key rhetors, genres, settings, and movements from the early republic to the present, these essays collectively challenge and complicate many previous claims made about the stability and development of gendered public and private spheres, the decline of oratorical culture and the limits of women's oratorical forms such as elocution and parlor rhetorics, and women's responses to rhetorical constraints on their public speaking. Enriching our understanding of women's oratorical education and practice, this cutting-edge work makes an important contribution to scholarship in rhetoric and communication.
