Download or read book Geneva and the Coming of the Wars of Religion in France 1555 1563 New edition Foreword by Mack P Holt Postface by Robert M Kingdon written by Robert M. Kingdon and published by Librairie Droz. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Myths about the St Bartholomew s Day Massacres 1572 1576

Download or read book Myths about the St Bartholomew s Day Massacres 1572 1576 written by Robert McCune Kingdon and published by . This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epochal event in French history, the St. Bartholomew's Day religious massacres are still the subject of controversy. A leading historian of the early modern period, Robert Kingdon, writes about the reactions to the massacres that were published at the time, showing how the relatively new medium of print was used by the Protestants to shape reaction to the catastrophe an early example of the printing press as an agent of social and political change. Kingdon describes the loosely connected network of printers in Geneva, Basel, Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Heidelberg, London, La Rochelle, and other cities that printed and distributed the grisly accounts of the murders of thousands of Protestants by Catholic zealots. But the pamphlets encompassed more than the making of martyrs. Some linked the massacres with an evil international conspiracy led by the French monarchy, Rome, and Spain. Others were political treatises arguing for a type of government that would no longer claim absolute power and would permit the survival of an ideological minority. Thus, the book contributes to an understanding of the history of printed propaganda and the role of myths in historical events, and illuminates important aspects of international diplomacy and political thought during the period of the later Reformation.

Book American Philanthropy Abroad

Download or read book American Philanthropy Abroad written by Merle Curti and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells for the first time, in rich detail, and without apologetics, what Americans have done, in the voluntary sector and often without official sanction, for human welfare in all parts of the world. Beneath the currently fashionable rhetoric of anti-colonialism is the story of people who have aided victims of natural disasters such as famines and earthquakes, and what they contributed to such agencies of cultural and social life as libraries, schools, and colleges. The work of an assortment of individuals, from missionaries to foundation executives, has advanced public health, international education, and technical assistance to the Third World. These people have also assisted in relief and relocation of refugees, displaced persons, and those who suffered religious and racial persecution. These activities were especially noteworthy following the two world wars of the twentieth century. The United States established great foundations--Carnegie, Rosenwald, Phelps-Stokes, Rockefeller, Ford, among others--which provided another face of capitalist accumulation to those in backward economic regions and those suffering political persecution. These were meshed with religious relief agencies of all denominations that also contributed to make possible what Arnold Toynbee called "a century in which civilized man made the benefits of progress available to all mankind." This is a massive work requiring more than five years of research, drawing upon a wide array of hitherto unavailable materials and source documents.

Download or read book Hitler Confronts England written by Walter Ansel and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fateful summer of 1940 Germany stood astride a prostrate Europe while the world held its breath and wondered, “Where next?” Hitler’s war machine had smashed Poland the previous fall, and the dull months of “Sitzkrieg” which followed had gradually lulled the Allies into anticipation of settlement. Then, in the spring, the German legions had suddenly burst into Denmark and Norway and through the Low Countries and France to the Channel coast. What could stop them? The German leader, Adolf Hitler, had rolled up an immense strategic initiative. It seemed plain that England came next. He mounted a powerful invasion force at the Channel. The troops trained and drilled, the ships formed and reformed. Yet the operation never sailed on its mission. “Why Not?” has been a tantalizing question ever since. The full answer may never be given. In it may lurk the first signs of Germany’s eventual defeat. Other studies have presented the problem through the events and their documentation. This book treats it along two distinct but related lines: along the line of a running evaluation of the German leadership and the command relationships that that leadership imposed, and along the line of an examination of the German invasion capability as judged by a naval officer long experienced in amphibious warfare. As a Forrestal Fellow of the U. S. Naval Academy during 1952 and 1953, Admiral Ansel consulted high and low participants of the invasion planning, ordering mounting, and drilling. He found little doubt about the seriousness of the German effort. He was able to discuss with the men involved the import of, and interpretation placed on, the orders and plans issued. From these factors he was enabled to bring his own professional judgment to bear on the operation’s prospects.
