Book Behavioral Genetics of the Mouse Volume 1 Genetics of Behavioral Phenotypes

Download or read book Behavioral Genetics of the Mouse Volume 1 Genetics of Behavioral Phenotypes written by Wim E. Crusio and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume in the new Cambridge Handbooks in Behavioral Genetics series, Behavioral Genetics of the Mouse provides baseline information on normal behaviors, essential in both the design of experiments using genetically modified or pharmacologically treated animals and in the interpretation and analyses of the results obtained. The book offers a comprehensive overview of the genetics of naturally occurring variation in mouse behavior, from perception and spontaneous behaviors such as exploration, aggression, social interactions and motor behaviors, to reinforced behaviors such as the different types of learning. Also included are numerous examples of potential experimental problems, which will aid and guide researchers trying to troubleshoot their own studies. A lasting reference, the thorough and comprehensive reviews offer an easy entrance into the extensive literature in this field, and will prove invaluable to students and specialists alike.

Book Genetics of Hypertension

Download or read book Genetics of Hypertension written by Xi Cheng and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypertension, or elevated blood pressure, is a major risk factor for various cardiovascular, renal diseases, and stroke. The form of hypertension with no identifiable cause is referred to as Essential Hypertension. Familial studies indicate that Essential Hypertension is heritable and, thereby, classical genetic approaches have been applied on both human and other mammalian models of hypertension to map the locations of the allelic variants within quantitative trait loci for blood pressure. The post genome era has further elevated this area of research into large-scale genome-wide association studies of hypertension in humans. Collectively, these studies have resulted in the prioritization and cataloging of several genomic regions containing allelic variants as candidates linked or associated with essential hypertension. Further, they are providing evidence to suggest that the inheritance of hypertension is rather complex, encompassing multiple variants both within protein-coding and non-coding annotations, each of which may act independently or interactively with other genes and/or environmental factors to differentially regulate blood pressure. This book provides an overview of the various methods employed to study the genetics of hypertension and discuss the progress and prospects of this area of research that may contribute towards individualized clinical management of hypertension in the future.

Book Social Learning In Animals

Download or read book Social Learning In Animals written by Cecilia M. Heyes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-05-23 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing realization among behaviorists and psychologists is that many animals learn by observation as members of social systems. Such settings contribute to the formation of culture. This book combines the knowledge of two groups of scientists with different backgrounds to establish a working consensus for future research. The book is divided into two major sections, with contributions by a well-known, international, and interdisciplinary team which integrates these growing areas of inquiry. Integrates the broad range of scientific approaches being used in the studies of social learning and imitation, and society and culture Provides an introduction to this field of study as well as a starting point for the more experienced researcher Chapters are succinct reviews of innovative discoveries and progress made during the past decade Includes statements of varied theoretical perspectives on controversial topics Authoritative contributions by an international team of leading researchers
