Book excerpt: Genetic World will take you on a suspense-filled tour to incredible real-world locations, and introduce you to amazing history and scientific advancements where facts are indeed stranger than fiction. The novel is reminiscent of the religious intrigue in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code . . . and the high concept science-driven suspense in Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park and West World. When an Oxford professor and New York Times reporter are invited to a press conference and presentation by two billionaire brothers, they are soon swept into the bizarre world surrounding their creation of Genetic World, the most advanced theme park and science R&D center in the world. As they sort through a series of clues which lead them on a high-stakes whirlwind trip to Jerusalem, Florence, Rome, and Paris, they discover a major conspiracy and a discovery that could change history. They soon realize that the founders have conflicting objectives for Genetic World. One brother is intent on creating an educational and entertainment park that rivals Disney World and all other amusement parks-including fictional theme parks such as Jurassic Park and West World. The other brother has been involved in activities that push the boundaries of ethics and science, and his actions have led to the theft of historic art and relics.Todd Easterling is a novelist and has worked with HBO, Disney, and other companies in the entertainment and technology sector-the highlight being the reception of a group Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Book excerpt: Todd Easterling, who has worked with HBO and was discovered by the Garon-Brooke Literary Agency of John Grisham fame, takes a big swing with Genetic World--clearly aiming at the religious and high concept intrigue that are reminiscent of the brilliant Dan Brown Robert Langdon series (Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, Inferno, Origin), and the suspenseful science-driven storytelling that was the hallmark of the late great Michael Crichton's visionary work in 1990's Jurassic Park and his iconic 1973 film Westworld. When Oxford professor Francesca Ferrari is invited to a press conference and VIP presentation by the world's two richest individuals--billionaire brothers Winston McCarthy and Ethan McCarthy--she is soon swept into the bizarre world surrounding their creation of Genetic World, the most innovative theme park and science R&D center in the world. Francesca is a renowned expert in ancient religions, iconography, soteriology--the study of salvation--and eschatology, the study of the "end of times." She and her longtime friend and acclaimed New York Times reporter, Sawyer Clemens, are asked by one of the brothers to investigate a highly sensitive archeological discovery--a controversial discovery that acclaimed real-life Oscar-winning film director James Cameron executive produced a documentary on. Francesca and Sawyer sort through a series of clues that lead them to Jerusalem, Rome, Vatican City, Florence, and Paris. Eventually they uncover a discovery that will change history. They soon determine that Genetic World's billionaire founders have conflicting objectives for the theme park and R&D center, which are located on four real-world islands off the coast of San Diego and northern Mexico . . . essentially sovereign territory not under the control or laws of any country. One brother is intent on creating an educational and entertainment park that rivals Disney World and all other amusement parks--including fictional theme parks such as Jurassic Park and Westworld. The other brother has been up to activities that push the boundaries of ethics and science. The history is real. The locations are real. The science is real. Welcome to Genetic World . . . where nothing can go wrong. Enjoy your visit.

Book excerpt: “Jillian Cantor’s In Another Time is a love song to the most powerful of all human emotions: hope. It is the story of Max and Hanna, two star-crossed lovers fighting to stay together during an impossible moment in history. It is gripping, mysterious, romantic, and altogether unique. I was enchanted by this beautiful, heartbreaking novel.” — Ariel Lawhon, author of I Was Anastasia A sweeping historical novel that spans Germany, England, and the United States and follows a young couple torn apart by circumstance leading up to World War II—and the family secret that may prove to be the means for survival. 1931, Germany. Bookshop owner Max Beissinger meets Hanna Ginsberg, a budding concert violinist, and immediately they feel a powerful chemistry. It isn’t long before they fall in love and begin making plans for the future. As their love affair unfolds over the next five years, Hitler comes to power. Their love is tested with the new landscape and the realities of war, not the least of which is that Hanna is Jewish and Max is not. But unbeknownst to Hanna is the fact that Max has a secret, which causes him to leave for months at a time—a secret that Max is convinced will help him save Hanna if Germany becomes too dangerous for her because of her religion. In 1946, Hanna Ginsberg awakens in a field outside of Berlin. Disoriented and afraid, she has no memory of the past ten years and no idea what has happened to Max. With no information as to Max’s whereabouts—or if he is even still alive—she decides to move to London to live with her sister while she gets her bearings. Even without an orchestra to play in, she throws herself completely into her music to keep alive her lifelong dream of becoming a concert violinist. But the music also serves as a balm to heal her deeply wounded heart and she eventually gets the opening she long hoped for. Even so, as the days, months, and years pass, taking her from London to Paris to Vienna to America, she continues to be haunted by her forgotten past, and the fate of the only man she has ever loved and cannot forget. Told in alternating viewpoints—Max in the years leading up to WWII, and Hanna in the ten years after—In Another Time is a beautiful novel about love and survival, passion and music, across time and continents.

Book excerpt: Emmy award winner Todd Easterling, who has worked with HBO and was discovered by the Garon-Brooke Literary Agency of John Grisham fame, aims at the suspense-thriller genre with The First Witness, a CIA conspiracy story reminiscent of books by Tom Clancy, Brad Thor, David Baldacci, and James Patterson. When a top Washington Post reporter discovers what he believes is an unauthorized CIA and military mission, he finds himself caught in the middle of a global crisis, international intrigue, and enamored with a beautiful and exotic woman he desperately wants to trust. Shawn Coyne, as Senior Editor at Doubleday/Random House, said of Todd's writing, "This is certainly a thriller that builds to global dimensions and I liked the way Mr. Easterling tackled the plot by having his journalist piece together the clues. The final revelation is also believable and consistent with the pervading paranoia in DC."The story follows Tom Lassiter in a fast-paced race to separate facts from propaganda, and ends in a heart-stopping glimpse of the new world we live in.

Book excerpt: The weirdness of actor Nicolas Cage and the weirdness of science-fiction author Philip K. Dick seem like a natural fit. The premise, taken from a short story by Dick, is a good one: A mediocre Las Vegas magician named Chris Johnson (Cage) can see into the future--but only about two minutes at the most. Just enough to pull off his act and to make some money at the gambling tables, so long as he's discreet. Unfortunately, he hasn't been discreet enough; a government agent (Julianne Moore) has sussed out his precognitive talent and wants to use him to track down terrorists. But all Johnson cares about is a beautiful young woman (Jessica Biel, The Illusionist) that he can see in his future--much further in his future than he's ever seen before. Next has flashes that point to a much, much better movie than it turned out to be. A sequence in which Johnson, clairvoyantly explores all the different permutations of how he might approach his mystery woman is both funny and thought-provoking, and when Johnson avoids pursuers by knowing just the right moment to turn a corner or duck his head, it's smart and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the terrorist part of the plot is utterly perfunctory and precognition is reduced to an action movie gimmick. Somewhere in there is the kernel of a romantic comedy about precognition that's just waiting to be made. Cage gives a solid if unsurprising performance, Moore is basically earning a paycheck, but Biel is unexpectedly good (and her part is considerably better-written than your usual romantic interest); her performance suggests a better future than anyone might have predicted.

Book excerpt: When her thirteen-year-old daughter's life is threatened, the mother, Katie, takes matters into her own hands to try and protect her and inadvertently finds herself swept into a romantic and exotic, far from home breathtaking adventure. David Stein, as Senior Editor at Simon and Schuster said, "Strong writing, strong characters, solidly researched, exciting novel. Great love scenes, powerful imagery. A very strong novel..." San Diego, California author Todd Easterling, originally discovered by the Jay Garon-Brooke Literary Agency of master novelist John Grisham fame, demonstrates genre crossover into the romantic suspense, medical suspense, family life, and adventure arena in this exciting, well-written high concept literary novel which was inspired by the brilliant works of Nicholas Sparks and Nicholas Evans (The Horse Whisperer), and pays homage to classics from Ernest Hemingway (The Snows of Kilimanjaro) and Karin Blixen/Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa. The author paints vivid atmospheric settings, real world dilemmas, and sympathetic characters who leave an indelible impact on the reader in this touching story of life, death, rebirth, the protective love between a mother and daughter, and the passion possible between a man and a woman. On a mission to take control of what has threatened to destroy everything that's important to her, Katie leaves behind her life in Kentucky horse country, where she works for a thoroughbred breeding and genetics facility, and finds herself on an unexpected dangerous adventure in Africa pursuing the world's most renowned expert on genetics, a doctor devoted to saving and bringing back endangered species in the amazing new field known as de-extinction. To ensure accuracy with technical aspects of the story, the author enlisted the help of celebrated experts including Nobel Prize nominee Sir Ian Wilmut, who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his astonishing breakthrough in cloning a mammal (Dolly the sheep), and Dr. Hal Broxmeyer, who pioneered work in a revolutionary new procedure. "Strong writing, strong characters, solidly researched, exciting novel. Great love scenes, powerful imagery. I think this is the best written book I've read for you. A very strong novel, and a good writer who, frankly, I think has more and quite possibly better books in him." David Stein, as Senior Editor, Simon & Schuster "The writing is good and atmospheric. Todd Easterling is an author with talent." Joseph Pittman, as Senior Editor, Dutton Signet, a division of Penguin USA "Todd Easterling certainly tells an intensely emotional story that features many sympathetic characters and he sets it convincingly in two vividly depicted, distinct locales. It has great cinematic potential." Maggie Crawford, as Senior Editor, Bantam-Doubleday-Dell, Random House Publishing Group

Book My Freshman Year

Download or read book My Freshman Year written by Rebekah Nathan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-07-25 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After fifteen years of teaching anthropology at a large university, Rebekah Nathan had become baffled by her own students. Their strange behavior—eating meals at their desks, not completing reading assignments, remaining silent through class discussions—made her feel as if she were dealing with a completely foreign culture. So Nathan decided to do what anthropologists do when confused by a different culture: Go live with them. She enrolled as a freshman, moved into the dorm, ate in the dining hall, and took a full load of courses. And she came to understand that being a student is a pretty difficult job, too. Her discoveries about contemporary undergraduate culture are surprising and her observations are invaluable, making My Freshman Year essential reading for students, parents, faculty, and anyone interested in educational policy.
