Book Genetic Conservation of Salmonid Fishes

Download or read book Genetic Conservation of Salmonid Fishes written by Joseph G. Cloud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the human population increases and nations become more industrialized, the habitat and water quality required for the survival of fish continues to decline. In addition to these environmental factors, fish populations are directly or potentially affected by harvesting, enhancement programs and introgression with hatchery-propagated or transgenic fish. To our knowledge no other scientific meeting has been assembled to consider the breadth of the problem, to review the technology that is presently available for the preservation of the germ plasm of salmonid stocks and to identify the scientific advances that are required to overcome the problems. Because many salmonids have spawning grounds within the confines of a specific region or county but will spend a large portion of their life cycle within the territorial waters of other countries or in the open ocean, the preservation of unique genes or gene pools in these animals requires international cooperation. This scientific meeting has provided a forum in which to discuss the problems, evaluate the present methods or technology for addressing the problems and suggest new directions or innovations that need to be implemented. During this meeting we limited our discussion to salmonid fishes. However, the general conclusions about the factors that affect the population dynamics of fish stocks and the technical aspects concerning the preservation of germ plasm will be applicable to other fish species.

Download or read book The Handbook of Salmon Farming written by Selina M. Stead and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-01-14 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years, there has been significant growth and development in the salmon farming industry. In order to be successful, practitioners not only need to know how the salmon lives and survives in the wild but, amongst other things have knowledge of disease, production processes, economics and marketing. The Handbook of Salmon Farming is a practical guide that covers everything the practitioner needs to know, and will also be of great use to academics and students of aquaculture and fish biology. The editors have invited contributions from experts in academia, the fish industry and government to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive handbook.

Book Molecular Genetics in Fisheries

Download or read book Molecular Genetics in Fisheries written by Gary R. Carvalho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic principle of all molecular genetic methods is to employ inherited, discrete and stable markers to identify genotypes that characterize individuals, populations or species. Such genetic data can provide information ori the levels and distribution of genetic variability in relation to mating patterns, life history, population size, migration and environment. Although molecular tools have long been employed to address various questions in fisheries biology and management, their contributions to the field are sometimes unclear, and often controversial. Much of the initial impetus for the deployment of molecular markers arose from the desire to assess fish stock structure based on various interpretations of the stock concept. Although such studies have met with varying success, they continue to provide an impetus for the development of increasingly sensitive population discriminators, yielding information that can be valuable for both sustainable exploitation and the conservation of fish populations. In the last major synthesis of the subject, Ryman and Utter (1987) summarized progress and applications, though this was prior to the wide-scale adoption of DNA methodology. New sources of genetic markers and protocols are now available, in particular those that exploit the widely distributed and highly variable repeat sequences of DNA, and the amplification technique of the polymerase chain reaction.

Book Salmon at the Edge

Download or read book Salmon at the Edge written by Derek Mills and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salmon at the Edge covers, in depth, the problems faced by wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout in estuaries and coastal zones, and in their early weeks at sea. The book also reflects the current precarious state of many migratory salmonid populations and the need for new approaches to a number of threats to these populations. Generated from papers given at the landmark Sixth Atlantic Salmon Symposium, held in Edinburgh, UK, Salmon at the Edge contains a huge wealth of information on such important topics as the impact of salmon farming, the behaviour of post-smolts in their early migration and their vulnerability to by-catch, and the use of nutrient enrichment and habitat enhancement to increase production of juvenile salmonids. With chapters written by internationally-known and respected authors, and including a message of support from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, this important volume is essential reading for all those involved with salmonid fishes, including fish biologists, fisheries scientists and managers, environmental, marine and freshwater scientists, and personnel involved in salmon aquaculture. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should have copies on their shelves. The Sixth Atlantic Salmon Symposium, from which chapters in this book have been generated, was organised by The Atlantic Salmon Trust and The Atlantic Salmon Federation, and was published with the financial support of The Fishmongers’ Company and Scottish and Southern Energy. Derek Mills of The Atlantic Salmon Trust, Pitlochry, Perthshire, UK has many years of research, writing and editing experience in salmon biology and fisheries

Book The Atlantic Salmon

Download or read book The Atlantic Salmon written by Eric Verspoor and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic Salmon is a cultural icon throughout its North Atlantic range; it is the focus of probably the World’s highest profile recreational fishery and is the basis for one of the World’s largest aquaculture industries. Despite this, many wild stocks of salmon are in decline and underpinning this is a dearth of information on the nature and extent of population structuring and adaptive population differentiation, and its implications for species conservation. This important new book will go a long way to rectify this situation by providing a thorough review of the genetics of Atlantic salmon. Sponsored by the European Union and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, this book comprises the work of an international team of scientists, carefully integrated and edited to provide a landmark book of vital interest to all those working with Atlantic salmon.

Download or read book Intraspecific Genetic Diversity written by Yuri Petrovich Altukhov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-16 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population and evolutionary genetics have been quickly developing ?elds of biological research over the past decades. This book compiles our current understanding of genetic processes in natural populations. In addition, the book provides the author’s original ideas and concepts based on the data obtained by himself and his close coworkers. The author introduces his pioneering concept of population genetic stability, and much of thebook is concerned with the factors and conditions of such stability. Why does genetic stability matter so much? Altukhov argues that the sustainable use of natural resources, including genetic resources of popu- tions, critically depends on the maintenance of their stability. The preser- tion of well-adapted genetic characteristics from one generation to the next is essential for this stability. Traditionally, population genetics has been - cusedonevolution andthe role of evolutionary factorsinshapinggenetic structures of populations. While the idea of a population as a dynamic unit of evolution has been widely accepted, the signi?cance of genetic stability and its implications for the long-term survival of populations and species have not been fully appreciated.
