Download or read book Bird Species written by Dieter Thomas Tietze and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-19 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average person can name more bird species than they think, but do we really know what a bird “species” is? This open access book takes up several fascinating aspects of bird life to elucidate this basic concept in biology. From genetic and physiological basics to the phenomena of bird song and bird migration, it analyzes various interactions of birds – with their environment and other birds. Lastly, it shows imminent threats to birds in the Anthropocene, the era of global human impact. Although it seemed to be easy to define bird species, the advent of modern methods has challenged species definition and led to a multidisciplinary approach to classifying birds. One outstanding new toolbox comes with the more and more reasonably priced acquisition of whole-genome sequences that allow causative analyses of how bird species diversify. Speciation has reached a final stage when daughter species are reproductively isolated, but this stage is not easily detectable from the phenotype we observe. Culturally transmitted traits such as bird song seem to speed up speciation processes, while another behavioral trait, migration, helps birds to find food resources, and also coincides with higher chances of reaching new, inhabitable areas. In general, distribution is a major key to understanding speciation in birds. Examples of ecological speciation can be found in birds, and the constant interaction of birds with their biotic environment also contributes to evolutionary changes. In the Anthropocene, birds are confronted with rapid changes that are highly threatening for some species. Climate change forces birds to move their ranges, but may also disrupt well-established interactions between climate, vegetation, and food sources. This book brings together various disciplines involved in observing bird species come into existence, modify, and vanish. It is a rich resource for bird enthusiasts who want to understand various processes at the cutting edge of current research in more detail. At the same time it offers students the opportunity to see primarily unconnected, but booming big-data approaches such as genomics and biogeography meet in a topic of broad interest. Lastly, the book enables conservationists to better understand the uncertainties surrounding “species” as entities of protection.

Book Naturalised Birds of the World

Download or read book Naturalised Birds of the World written by Christopher Lever and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-01-29 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the world's naturalised (successfully introduced) species of bird. Many species have been introduced to countries outside their natural range by people, either deliberately or accidentally, with varied consequences for both those species themselves and the native fauna of their 'new' homes. In Britain, the introduced Canada Goose has quickly become ubiquitous at every lake and riverside, while the Golden Pheasant remains a scarce and unobtrusive inhabitant of a few scattered, remote woodlands. The House Sparrow and Common Starling, both in decline over parts of their native range, are thriving in a naturalised state in North America and elsewhere in the world. Naturalised populations of Mallard in various parts of the world are threatening a total of seven other duck species with extinction through hybridisation. This book discusses each species in turn, describing how, why, when and where its introduction took place, how it became established, and the ecological and economic impacts its presence has had in the country or countries it is naturalised in. Each account has a map, showing natural and introduced range, and there is a wealth of beautiful line drawings of the species concerned.

Book Commercial and Ornamental Game Bird Breeders Handbook

Download or read book Commercial and Ornamental Game Bird Breeders Handbook written by Allen Woodard and published by Surrey, B.C.: Hancock House. This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three of the most imminent researchers in the keeping, rearing, and nutritional studies of pheasant, quail, and partridge have combined their sixty years of experience to produce this handbook of aviculture. An indispensable tool. Upland game birds represent some of the most colorful and attractive birds in the world. Certain species of pheasants, quail, and partridges are raised for their economic importance as birds for sport shooting and as gourmet food items. Millions of these birds are harvested in the wild and on private shooting clubs. Privately owned game bird farms supply the birds that are released at shooting clubs. Some of these birds are also used for populating established or new game bird habitats. Exotic and rare species of game birds are also kept in special aviaries throughout the world, Most bird fanciers are interested only in maintaining exotics for their beauty, but some do recognize the importance of conserving the pure blood lines of species that are threatened by habitat destruction and uncontrolled hunting pressure. Many aspects of husbandry for domestic and exotic game birds are similar, yet there are important differences as to the amount of space needed for breeding stock, method of breeding (mass or pedigree mating), housing, nutrition, and egg care and incubation practices. This book was written for the purpose of updating the most recent methods used to reproduce commercial and exotic species of game birds. The most current methods of egg handling, incubation, nutrition, housing, lighting, and disease control are described for domestic and exotic species of pheasants, partridges, and quail. The authors offer detailed information on genetics, embryo development, artificial insemination techniques, and bird biology that are considered helpful to beginners, experienced game breeders, and bird biologists. This book can be used as a text or reference for college courses in avian or upland game bird management.
