Book excerpt: It is not often that one has the opportunity to send a public birthday greet ing to a friend and colleague of many years, and to congratulate him on having reached the age of reason. In fact it happens only once, and comes then as a surprise. Surely it was only a few years ago that we sat together at an International Genetics Congress in Ithaca, and only yesterday that we became members of the same department. The eighth floor of Schermerhorn Hall had a north end where the flies were and a south end furnished with mice, and in between, a seminar room and laboratory. There the distances were short and the doors open and the coffee pot busy. But it now appears that yesterday has fallen thirty years behind and that we have grown up. I find it interesting and appropriate that Dobzhansky's lifetime spans the period of maturation of the fields to which this volume is devoted. This is true in a chronological sense for his birth occurred in the same year, 1900, in which modern genetics began. The rediscovery of Mendel's princi ples and the interpretation of the nature of heredity and variation to which this event led were necessary prerequisites to the development of evolution ary biology as presented in this collection of essays.

Thanks to the progress achieved during the last ten years in the fields of devel opmental and molecular genetics, work on Drosophila develop ment has considerably expanded creating an even greater need for the information that we present here. Our own interest for wildtype embryonie development arose several years ago, when we began to study the development of mutants. It governs predator-prey relationships, kin and mate selection, food localization, maternal behaviors and avoidance of environmental toxins. Olfactory behavior is determined by the concerted action of multiple genes that interact with one another and with the environment, be it external, genetic or sexual. Like a number of other quantitative traits, odor-guided behavior shows significant sex-specificity in its phenotypic expression. However, the molecular basis of sexual dimorphism remains poorly defined. This study provides the first example of an autosomal pleiotropic gene that undergoes sex-specific transcriptional regulation to provide the potential for sexually dimorphic olfactory behavior. The phenotypic and molecular characterization of a P-element tagged locus, smi97B, reveals that the multiple PDZ (PSD-95, Discs-large, Zo-1) and LRR (Leucine-Rich Repeat) domain protein, Scribble (Scrib) is responsible for olfactory behavior in adult and larval stages of Drosophila melanogaster. In the adult, scrib is alternatively spliced to generate sex-specific transcripts that are correlated with sexually dimorphic olfactory phenotypes. Head-derived scrib splice variants differ in the number and positions of protein-interaction (PDZ and LRR) domains they encode. Since, Scrib is a synaptic scaffolding protein, these differences may direct the organization of sexually dimorphic synaptic signaling assemblies that contribute to odor-guided behavior.
