Book excerpt: The uprising will destroy everything. A change of heart could stop it. In the aftermath of a deadly virus attack on Exilon 5, life appears to be returning to normal. For ITF Director Bill Taggart, temporary alliances with old foes have been forgotten. Armed with only a fragile peace treaty, Bill wields it to keep all factions of society lawful. But things turn sinister when a new force takes control of the cities—a move that ousts Bill from his position. With three opposing sides seeking independence, he scrambles to work out who is behind the deadly move. When an old ally reaches out, Bill thinks he understands the reason for the citywide attack. But the deeper he digs into the enemy’s motives, the less obvious the reasons become. Without a strong leader and plan, the uprising appears unstoppable. But Bill fears that to enact real reform on Exilon 5, change must begin with him. Genesis Rising is the eighth book in the Genesis series. If you like strong heroines, dysfunctional characters, and nail-biting scenes, then you’ll love the final installment in Eliza Green’s alien invasion/dystopian series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal in its style yet radical in its vision, Radical Ecopsychology offers an original introduction to ecopsychology—an emerging field that ties the human mind to the natural world. In order for ecopsychology to be a force for social change, Andy Fisher insists it must become a more comprehensive and critical undertaking. Drawing masterfully from humanistic psychology, hermeneutics, phenomenology, radical ecology, nature writing, and critical theory, he develops a compelling account of how the human psyche still belongs to nature. This daring and innovative book proposes a psychology that will serve all life, providing a solid base not only for ecopsychological practice, but also for a critical theory of modern society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfinished at Puccini's death in 1924, Turandot was not only his most ambitious work, but it became the last Italian opera to enter the international repertory. In this colorful study two renowned music scholars demonstrate that this work, despite the modern climate in which it was written, was a fitting finale for the centuries-old Great Tradition of Italian opera. Here they provide concrete instances of how a listener might encounter the dramatic and musical structures of Turandot in light of the Italian melodramma, and firmly establish Puccini's last work within the tradition of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi. In a summary of the sounds, sights, and symbolism of Turandot, the authors touch on earlier treatments of the subject, outline the conception, birth, and reception of the work, and analyze its coordinated dramatic and musical design. Showing how the evolution of the libretto documents Puccini's reversion to large musical forms typical of the Great Tradition in the late nineteenth century, they give particular attention to his use of contrasting Romantic, modernist, and two kinds of orientalist coloration in the general musical structure. They suggest that Puccini's inability to complete the opera resulted mainly from inadequate dramatic buildup for Turandot's last-minute change of heart combined with an overly successful treatment of the secondary character.

Book The Soundtrack of My Life

Download or read book The Soundtrack of My Life written by Clive Davis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music legend Clive Davis recounts an extraordinary five-decade career in the music business, while also telling a remarkable personal story of encounters with some of the greatest musical artists of our time, including Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, Barry Manilow, the Grateful Dead, Patti Smith, Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, and Alicia Keys. Orphaned in his teens, Davis earned a full scholarship to New York University and another to Harvard Law School. He served as General Counsel of Columbia Records and, in a totally unexpected stroke of fate, became head of the company overnight. More surprisingly, he learned he had “ears,” a rare ability to spot special talent and hit records. Those ears contributed to the success of three companies—Columbia, Arista, and J—where Davis discovered and developed more unique artists than anyone in the history of the music industry. What began on the grass at the Monterey Pop Festival with the signing of Janis Joplin has evolved into a lifelong passion and calling, spanning genres, including rock, pop, R&B, country, jazz fusion, and hip-hop. His is the imprimatur that has helped shape contemporary music and, over the years, our popular culture. The Soundtrack of My Life is an essential book for anyone interested in the story of popular music, the fascinating ups and downs of the music business, the alchemy of hits, and the dramatic life of a brilliant leader...and listener. It is a riveting read from beginning to end.
