Download or read book The Intentional Father written by Jon Tyson and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-initiation is killing our young men. Without strong mentors, boys are walking alone into a wilderness of conflicting messages about who they should be as men. It's no wonder that our sons are confused about what the world expects from them and what they should expect of themselves. The Intentional Father is the antidote. This concise book is filled with practical steps to help men raise sons of consequence--young men who know what they believe, know who they are, and will stand up against the negative cultural trends of our day. Jon Tyson lays out a clear path for fathers and sons that includes specific activities, rites of passage, and significant "marking moments" that can be customized to fit any family. It's not enough to hope our sons will become good men. We need them to be good at being men. This book shows how fathers, grandfathers, and other male mentors can lead the way.

Download or read book Dad Was Right written by Brian David Floyd and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years," Mark Twain is rumored to have quipped. In "Dad Was Right" Brian David Floyd explores this common sentiment teenage sons often have towards their fathers, and the change of heart that comes once they too enter adult hood.In ten short chapters, Floyd conveys key life lessons his father taught him through funny and touching stories he recalls from his teenage years. Such lessons include the fact that hard work is a part of life...someday you'll actually need what they're teaching in school...why you must be smart when you have to fight....never being afraid to ask the prettiest girl to dance...and of course the importance of calling your grandmother. "Dad Was Right" is full of the wisdom fathers pass on to their sons, though it's often initially rejected. But ironically, it is these lessons sons will cleave to as they become adults and seek to pass on their children as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative, yet humorous, book is a look at how the Housing Crisis and subsequent recession of 2007 impacted a young family striving to succeed in suburban, middle-class America. The story takes a look at the very personal perspective of the financial crisis that turned our nation upside down. It shows how the nationwide catastrophe forced change on this average American family and details some of the lessons that were and are still being learned from that change. The book is unapologetically faith-based without being "preachy." The author pokes fun at each member of the family (except his mother-in-law) while giving the reader a glimpse into the crazy and hectic world that he lives in.

Book 101 Life Lessons According to Dad

Download or read book 101 Life Lessons According to Dad written by H. Thorp Minister III and published by Mira Digital Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As most divorced couples know -- with kids in the mix -- it is very difficult to have a positive influence on a child particularly when dad lives out of state -- far removed from the rigors of the day to day challenges of raising a child. My original plan was to write one life lesson each week and mail it to my daughter for her to read, study and keep for future reference. Sort of like homework with dad yet still be educational and fun in the process. I wrote my first Life Lesson on June 28, 2011. After many revisions, the book was completed a year later. At the time, I would hand write the Life Lesson on a legal sized piece of paper and photocopy it at the local Post Net store and send the original to my daughter Kelsey in Seattle. I kept the photocopy. After dozens of trips, the young woman working behind the counter, Kate Krutilova, says "You know Thorp, you need to write a book!" I thought about it for a moment and realized she was absolutely right! I finally reached my goal of 100 Life Lessons... Three weeks later another one popped into my head at 3am in the morning... So I ended up with 101! The funny thing about reading this book is that there is no rhyme or reason as to the order in which each Life Lesson is written. It's just what came to me at the time. (That is the great thing about having ADD.) Special thanks to Dr. Victoria Ibric at the Neurofeedback & NeuroRehab Institute in Pasadena, CA. I hope you will find this book entertaining, heart-warming and full of really good tips. Buy one for yourself... Better yet, buy two and give it to someone you care about. Thanks for your support! Enjoy!

Book Life s Lessons from a Father to His Daughter

Download or read book Life s Lessons from a Father to His Daughter written by Bob Grossmann and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life's Lessons from a Father to his Daughter uses twenty-four stories, pictures and artwork to help teach our children life's lessons with the aim of helping our children learn to make good decision-making skills. Decision-making skills are often not well taught or integrated into a strong sense of personal philosophy. Human nature can be impulsive. The use of stories (real life or metaphors) to pass on life lessons from one generation to another is at the core of our oral and written traditions. Parents can help to pass on this information as a creative way to install core values, help reduce the chance of mishap, and enhance lifelong success. Part of the challenge is establishing a dialogue that allows worldviews to be discussed: both the commonalties and the differences. Perhaps part of the failure to achieve a sustained dialogue is that we as parents wait too long to start the dialogue. Part of the challenge, too, is that the lessons have different levels of meaning as we age. So Life's Lessons from a Father to his Daughter was written to have meaning at the different stages of life: in one's mid-teens, mid-twenties, and again in mid-life. Value exists in the stories being real. Non-fiction can carry more weight. Children need to learn early that their parents continue to go through what they are experiencing. We, too, make mistakes, that we try and fail, and we are both individuals and members of larger communities. All the increasing access to information may not make decision-making easier. Greater discrimination and better choices will be essential. So, read the vignettes with your children and see where the discussion goes. Be sure to have a few good laughs along the way! Life's Lessons from a Father to his Daughter is a tool to help parents communicate with their children by providing a context for parents to add their own personal stories.

Book Letters to Our Next Generation

Download or read book Letters to Our Next Generation written by Lane Cohee and published by . This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after my oldest son Chase turned 14, he tested for his Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. The motto of his school is, "Black Belt Earned, Never Given." True to their word, they put him through several hours of challenges, testing all the skills he'd developed over the previous five years. Like me at his age, he was still fairly small which made the physical tests even more difficult. But, after he persevered, I realized he was much closer to being a young man than a boy any longer. The realization of our children passing into young adulthood comes to fathers in unique and diverse ways. But when it comes, most of us realize that no matter how many life lessons we've taught them and how well they've responded, there's much more left to teach than there is time together to teach it. As I've entered mid-life, I've realized that no period of time shaped my life more prominently than my late teens and early 20s. The decisions I made during that period had more impact on the direction of my life than any other. Ironically, it seems that it's during that period of life that our children need the wisdom they won't naturally acquire until later. That's where we fathers are supposed to help, and that's part of our calling. As I pondered this reality in my relationship with Chase, I became increasingly convicted that I needed to write him a roadmap for those transitional years. At mid-life, we often joke about how we wished we'd known then what we know now (and I'm sure we'll say the same thing in 20 more years). But, what if, as parents, we were intentional about providing our children the breadcrumbs that could lead them past some of the minefields of our youth? What if, as parents, we wrote our children "messages in a bottle," that they might only partially understand now, but might more fully understand as they entered the experiences of young adulthood?I published Letters to Our Next Generation in hopes that the letters might inspire other fathers to write their own philosophy of life, their own experiences, and their own wisdom for their children. Letters may be a helpful starter, guide, or even template, but they are not meant to replace any man's unique story or style. Instead, I am hopeful that more fathers, and mothers alike, will realize the benefit of writing their own letters - letters that may follow from generation to generation-and letters your children will treasure because of the sacrifice and personal deposit you have left them. They are not meant to replace personal time, but they can be messages lasting long beyond the earthly experience you have together.CONTENTS* Introduction: To Christian Fathers* To My Sons* Rings of the Circle* The Inner Ring: Knowing Yourself* The Inner Ring: Idols* The Inner Ring: Idol Detection* The Inner Ring: The Path of Identity* The Inner Ring: Journeying the Path of Identity* The Inner Ring: Identity Killers - Fear* The Inner Ring: Identity Killers - Shame* The Inner Ring: Your Thought Life* The Inner Ring: Character* The Inner Ring: Character Traits* The Middle Ring: Relationships* The Middle Ring: Dating* The Middle Ring: Purity* The Middle Ring: God's Choice for You* The Middle Ring: The Calling of a Husband* The Middle Ring: Friendship* The Middle Ring: Discipleship* The Middle Ring: Making Disciples* The Outer Ring: Calling* The Outer Ring: Learning and Education* The Outer Ring: Skills for Any Profession* The Outer Ring: Leadership* The Outer Ring: Leadership Directions* The Outer Ring: Service and Ministry* The Outer Ring: Money* The Outer Ring: Rest and Balance * The Seasons of Life

Book excerpt: For fathers who long to make a positive, lasting difference in their sons’ lives, passing down a legacy of values and ideals that will help them mature into men—into true men, leaders, voices of strength and wisdom for the next generation and beyond—the challenge has become more daunting than ever. I Call Shotgun is a practical playbook designed to equip dads for this vital task, increasing our influence and deepening our father-son relationships. Written as letters from the authors to their own sons, the book’s sixty-four bite-size chapters cover a wide range of territory, from courage and compassion to finance and faith, from peer pressure and purity to hard work and humility. The life lessons within these pages teach sons how to cultivate integrity, follow True North, avoid victimitis, hang with the wise, laugh at political correctness, train for adversity, seek God first, make no excuses, build productive habits, and much more. Shooting from the heart, Tommy Newberry and Curt Beavers—men of faith, influencers, entrepreneurs, and battle-tested dads themselves—offer an engaging, highly personal collection of potent insights, a just-in-time antidote to the empty counterfeits that today’s culture tries to pass off as wisdom. At the end of each chapter, simple yet carefully crafted questions invite deeper conversations between dads and sons. Relevant to any man, but especially tailored for fathers and their teen or pre-teen sons, I Call Shotgun will help you to instill character in the boys who are growing into men right before your eyes—and it might just sharpen your own character in the process.
