Book excerpt: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of altering host plant on the mortality, Fitness and growth rate of the generalist and specialist aphids. 1.There was a significant increase in mortality of generalist aphids on Z. mays but low mortality on V. fabae. Mortality of specialist aphids was significantly low among V. fabae host plant and C. acutum. 2.The generalist aphids showed the highest fitness, growth rate and performance on V. fabae whereas specialist aphids showed lower fitness, growth rate and performance on V. fabae than on C. acutum. The generalist aphids took significantly different time to complete their development than specialists on V. fabae. 3. Biochemical plant secondary metabolites content among three aphid infested host plants The biochemical changes in plant secondary metabolites due to aphid infestation had been investigated. Host plant defence secondary metabolites differs from studied non host or toxic plants. The physiological changes in aphid enzymes among three different host plants had been investigated. Host plant alteration cause changes in enzymes activities between generalist aand specialist aphids.

The intrinsic properties and taxonomy of aphid-borne viruses are also examined. Comprised of 22 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the importance of aphids as vectors, their biology, and the properties of the viruses they transmit. These introductory chapters prepare the reader for later ones on aphid-virus-plant interactions. The next section deals with transmission mechanisms, with emphasis on several novel alternatives to many of the traditionally held concepts of how aphids transmit viruses. Accessory factors in non-persistent virus transmission are considered. Subsequent chapters focus on technological advances in aphid-virus research, including the use of aphid cell culturing, radioisotope methodology, membrane feeding, and electrical measurement systems. The most promising frontiers in epidemiological and control-oriented research are discussed in the last two sections. The fine line between presenting a few topics in great detail or many topics in veneer has been carefully drawn, such that the book contains sufficient diversity to cover the field and a few topics in some depth. After the reader has penetrated the crust of what has been learned about chemical ecology of insects, the deficiencies in our understanding of this field should become evident. These deficiencies, to which no chapter topic is immune, indicate the youthful state of chemical ecology and the need for further investigations, especially those with potential for integrating elements that are presently isolated from each other. At the outset of this volume it becomes evident that, although we are beginning to decipher how receptor cells work, virtually nothing is known of how sensory information is coded to become relevant to the insect and to control the behavior of the insect.
