Book excerpt: Education in Scotland is markedly different from what happens in the rest of the UK - with a different National Curriculum, school boards to oversee school management and a General Teaching Council which has been in existence since 1965. Whilst there are many examples of successful and innovative practice in Scotland, the system is quite often not recognised as different by writers who talk about the UK education system as if it were one smooth whole. This book describes recent developments in both legislation and practice in Scotland, drawing comparisons with the English system. Chapters cover: * administration and management * the professional competence of teachers * early years education provision * the 'National Curriculum' in Scotland * Secondary Education * Special Educational Needs

Book Teacher Education Policy

Download or read book Teacher Education Policy written by Rob McBride and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To improve schools we need to improve teachers. This volume provides recent research evidence that suggests that current education policy is not Promoting Effective Teacher Education And That Teacher Education Policy has: failed to support the formation of professional partnerships in initial teacher education; has almost ignored the induction of newly qualified teachers; and has narrowed in-service education into support for the implementation of central policy.; The evidence gathered in this book is used to argue for new forms of teacher education in every phase, built upon the foundation of professional partnership between schools and institutions of higher education. It is suggested that the funding for such changes could be drawn from less effective forms of school improvement, such as National Curriculum development and school inspection. With the implementation of such changes, it is argued, good quality teacher education programmes would prosper and foster a broad concensus about educational development that is often absent.

Book The Journal of Education for Teaching at 40

Download or read book The Journal of Education for Teaching at 40 written by Peter Gilroy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, the Journal of Education for Teaching celebrated 40 years of original contributions on the subject of international teacher education with the publication of an anniversary virtual special issue. Its unique contribution to debates about the preparation and lifelong learning of teachers in a variety of fields, including medical education and language education, have been expressed in a variety of formats and international contexts. These include high quality academic papers using innovative qualitative and quantitative methodologies, symposia in the form of Platonic dialogues, and even critical positions expressed in verse. This virtual special issue was freely available online throughout 2015 but the strong demand for the papers has prompted their re-publication in this volume, with the addition of several more articles. Taken together, this collection will allow the reader to experience the variety of the dozen or so international contexts represented in the journal and its academic quality. Included in the volume is the original Editorial from the first issue of the journal. The fact that the points made in this forty-year-old piece still ring true suggests that the threats to high quality teacher education remain much the same as they did four decades or more ago. The Journal of Education for Teaching continues to provide an indispensable platform for colleagues to make their voices heard in what appears to be an increasingly shrill evidence-free environment. Long may it do so.
