Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Economic Models provides information pertinent to the adaptive processes in economics. This book discusses the developments on research in the field of adaptive economics. Organized into 23 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the study of economic processes using concepts of adaptation. This text then explains how concepts arising from biology can be formulated in such a way that they can be a source of insight into man's social systems. Other chapters present a general view of the adaptation of the firm to its environment and discuss how a firm with a definite commodity in mind can decide whether to enter a given established market. This book discusses as well the simple duopoly problem in which firms are in error in the sense that they specify an incomplete model and add a random error term. The final chapter deals with the set of models and problems for the development of a theory of money and financial institutions. This book is a valuable resource for economic theorists and economists.

Book excerpt: This innovative new text from Jeffrey Sachs and Xiokai Yangintroduces students to development economics from the perspectivesof inframarginal analysis and marginal analysis. The bookdemonstrates how the new-found emphasis on inframarginal analysishas influenced a shift back to an interest in Classical Economicsfrom Neoclassical Economics. Inframarginal Analysis vs. Marginal Analysis is presented as aconsistent theoretical framework throughout. Shows how the relationship of Inframarginal Analysis toMarginal Analysis has influenced the shift back to an interest inClassical Economics from Neoclassical Economics with regard toeconomic development. Allows economists to reduce their overall reliance on marginalanalysis, which may be less relevant to development economics thanit is to the economics of development countries. Brings considerable analytic machinery to bear on importantproblems. A focus on institutions and transaction costs that is veryrelevant to development economics. Offers a thorough analysis of trade (CHs. 3 - 7) andmacroeconomics (CHs. 16 - 19), both of which are not dealth with indepth by comparable textbooks.

Download or read book Dominant Currency Paradigm A New Model for Small Open Economies written by Camila Casas and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most trade is invoiced in very few currencies. Despite this, the Mundell-Fleming benchmark and its variants focus on pricing in the producer’s currency or in local currency. We model instead a ‘dominant currency paradigm’ for small open economies characterized by three features: pricing in a dominant currency; pricing complementarities, and imported input use in production. Under this paradigm: (a) the terms-of-trade is stable; (b) dominant currency exchange rate pass-through into export and import prices is high regardless of destination or origin of goods; (c) exchange rate pass-through of non-dominant currencies is small; (d) expenditure switching occurs mostly via imports, driven by the dollar exchange rate while exports respond weakly, if at all; (e) strengthening of the dominant currency relative to non-dominant ones can negatively impact global trade; (f) optimal monetary policy targets deviations from the law of one price arising from dominant currency fluctuations, in addition to the inflation and output gap. Using data from Colombia we document strong support for the dominant currency paradigm.

As with all bubbles, there are varying explanations for its occurrence, but the hype which surrounds the internet has shouldered a lot of the blame. There is however, no doubt that the internet has significantly changed the way people live, think and do business. This impr
