Book excerpt: "While most genealogy books focus on original records and primary sources, this title focuses on secondary sources that have proliferated because of the growth of genealogy. It identifies and explains the vast number of published genealogical sources, acting both as a guidebook and a bibliography to the printed material in the field. The introduction alone is a treasure trove of information, and should be called Genealogy Sources 101. Coverage includes encyclopedias, gazetteers, indexes, abstracts, histories, biographies, military sources, periodicals, and much more. Appendixes include CD-ROMs for family historians, major genealogical libraries in the Inited States, and a list of genealogical publishers and booksellers. This monumental source is highlyrecommended in all libraries for the beginner or expert ".--"Outstanding Reference Sources : the 1999 Selection of New Titles", American Libraries, May 1999. Book Genealogical Material in the St Louis Public Library Classic Reprint

Download or read book Genealogical Material in the St Louis Public Library Classic Reprint written by Katharine Twining Moody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogical Material in the St. Louis Public Library Today, although it is true that this collection still lacks important sets, it has reached a point in its development where fairly satisfactory research is possible. Naturally, in View of the fact that acquisitions are constantly being received, this list must serve merely as a basis or guide. Since, however, current additions to the collection are listed in the Library's Monthly Bulletins, persons interested may, with little trouble, possess an up-to-date catalogue. It is, of course, impossible to mention all titles which afford genealogical information, for most biographies and histories might be included. Contrary to the custom of many libraries the greater part of the collection here listed is kept upon open shelves in the Reference Room. Such easy access arouses much favorable comment for reasons easily understood. It scarcely needs to be urged that a small collection used exhaustively is more satisfactory than resources inaccessible and material unsuspected. Book Living Books

Download or read book Living Books written by Janneke Adema and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reimagining the scholarly book as living and collaborative--not as commodified and essentialized, but in all its dynamic materiality. In this book, Janneke Adema proposes that we reimagine the scholarly book as a living and collaborative project--not as linear, bound, and fixed, but as fluid, remixed, and liquid, a space for experimentation. She presents a series of cutting-edge experiments in arts and humanities book publishing, showcasing the radical new forms that book-based scholarly work might take in the digital age. Adema's proposed alternative futures for the scholarly book go beyond such print-based assumptions as fixity, stability, the single author, originality, and copyright, reaching instead for a dynamic and emergent materiality. Adema suggests ways to unbind the book, describing experiments in scholarly book publishing with new forms of anonymous collaborative authorship, radical open access publishing, and processual, living, and remixed publications, among other practices. She doesn't cast digital as the solution and print as the problem; the problem in scholarly publishing, she argues, is not print itself, but the way print has been commodified and essentialized. Adema explores alternative, more ethical models of authorship; constructs an alternative genealogy of openness; and examines opportunities for intervention in current cultures of knowledge production. Finally, asking why it is that we cut and bind our research together at all, she examines two book publishing projects that experiment with remix and reuse and try to rethink and reperform the book-apparatus by taking responsibility for the cuts they make.
