Book Gene Expression at the Beginning of Animal Development

Download or read book Gene Expression at the Beginning of Animal Development written by M.L. DePamphilis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of life may be a miracle to some, and a mystery to others, but it is certainly one of the most exciting and perhaps controversial fields of scientific investigation in the 21st century. Among the metazoa, life begins when an egg is fertilized by a sperm. The sperm provides a genetic blueprint from the father and perhaps some critical proteins. The egg provides a genetic blueprint from the mother together with a large reservoir of mRNAs and proteins that are required for DNA replication, cell division and the onset of zygotic gene expression. All of the thousands of genes in these two mature gametes are transcriptionally silent and remain so until fertilization. This work focuses on three biological systems, providing the reader with a clear understanding of the current state of affairs, and the ability to identify common principles as well as critical differences that are responsible for beginning the process of animal development. The essays presented will be of practical value to all those who are interested in improving fertilization in vitro, in designing novel methods of contraception, in developing preimplantation genetic diagnosis for various diseases, in cloning animals by transplanting nuclei from adult cells to an enucleated egg, and in the application of embryonic stem cells to curing genetic diseases or replacing damaged tissues. But above all, this volume is offered to those who simply have an insatiable curiosity about life and its beginnings.

Book Frontiers in Computational and Systems Biology

Download or read book Frontiers in Computational and Systems Biology written by Jianfeng Feng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-06-14 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological and biomedical studies have entered a new era over the past two decades thanks to the wide use of mathematical models and computational approaches. A booming of computational biology, which sheerly was a theoretician’s fantasy twenty years ago, has become a reality. Obsession with computational biology and theoretical approaches is evidenced in articles hailing the arrival of what are va- ously called quantitative biology, bioinformatics, theoretical biology, and systems biology. New technologies and data resources in genetics, such as the International HapMap project, enable large-scale studies, such as genome-wide association st- ies, which could potentially identify most common genetic variants as well as rare variants of the human DNA that may alter individual’s susceptibility to disease and the response to medical treatment. Meanwhile the multi-electrode recording from behaving animals makes it feasible to control the animal mental activity, which could potentially lead to the development of useful brain–machine interfaces. - bracing the sheer volume of genetic, genomic, and other type of data, an essential approach is, ?rst of all, to avoid drowning the true signal in the data. It has been witnessed that theoretical approach to biology has emerged as a powerful and st- ulating research paradigm in biological studies, which in turn leads to a new - search paradigm in mathematics, physics, and computer science and moves forward with the interplays among experimental studies and outcomes, simulation studies, and theoretical investigations.

Book Computational Systems Biology

Download or read book Computational Systems Biology written by Julien Delile and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose a theoretical, yet realistic agent-based model and simulation platform of animal embryogenesis, called MecaGen, centered on the physico-chemical coupling of cell mechanics with gene expression and molecular signaling. This project aims to investigate the multiscale dynamics of the early stages of biological morphogenesis. Here, embryonic development is viewed as an emergent, self-organized phenomenon based on a myriad of cells and their genetically regulated, and regulating, biomechanical behavior. Cells’ mechanical properties (such as division rate, adhesion strength, or intrinsic motility) are closely correlated with their spatial location and temporal state of genetic and molecular dynamics (such as internal protein and external ligand concentrations) and affect each other concurrently. In a second part, we illustrate our model on artificial data (gene regulation motifs and cell sorting), then demonstrate a customization and application to a real biological case study in the zebrafish early development. We use as an example the episode of intercalation patterns appearing during the first phase of epiboly and the movements of the deep cells between the yolk and the enveloping layer. A domain of the model’s multidimensional parameter space is explored systematically, while experimental data obtained from microscopy imaging of live embryos is used to measure the “fitness” of the virtual embryo and validate our hypotheses.

Book Environmental Stress and Gene Regulation

Download or read book Environmental Stress and Gene Regulation written by Kenneth B. Storey and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 1999 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental physiology and comparative biochemistry are shifting to a new level of focus-the gene. New developments in molecular biology have put simplified techniques for screening and analysis of gene expression into the hands of physiologists and biochemists who are using these for novel explorations of organismal responses to environmental stress. Selected topics cover both animal and plant systems to focus on recent advances in gene expression responses to environmental stresses including low and high temperature, freezing, oxygen limitation, reactive oxygen species, nutrient restriction as well as environmentally-cued programmed cell death. The book highlights the latest techniques and approaches for exploring the regulation of gene expression and illustrates, in selected systems, the interactions between genes and environmental stress that underlie adaptive responses.

  • Pages : 431 pages

Download or read book From Gene to Animal written by David de Pomerai and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-11-30 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of molecular biological techniques to the study of development has had a profound effect on our understanding of developmental processes. This 1985 book expounds some of the views on which hierarchies of genes control aspects of animal development. There is an emphasis on the best-studied systems, namely Drosophila and the nematode Caenorhabditis, though some features of mouse and sea-urchin development are also discussed. The book focuses on how information obtained from the study of mutants, combined with molecular details of the structure, regulation and functions of the genes involved, sheds light on the complex processes of animal development. The 1990 second edition, which is reprinted here, is an expanded and largely rewritten version of Dr de Pomerai's successful first edition. It features extensive additions to the chapter on insect development, a chapter discussing nematode development and another addressing differentiation in vertebrate systems.

Download or read book The Science and Applications of Synthetic and Systems Biology written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many potential applications of synthetic and systems biology are relevant to the challenges associated with the detection, surveillance, and responses to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. On March 14 and 15, 2011, the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Forum on Microbial Threats convened a public workshop in Washington, DC, to explore the current state of the science of synthetic biology, including its dependency on systems biology; discussed the different approaches that scientists are taking to engineer, or reengineer, biological systems; and discussed how the tools and approaches of synthetic and systems biology were being applied to mitigate the risks associated with emerging infectious diseases. The Science and Applications of Synthetic and Systems Biology is organized into sections as a topic-by-topic distillation of the presentations and discussions that took place at the workshop. Its purpose is to present information from relevant experience, to delineate a range of pivotal issues and their respective challenges, and to offer differing perspectives on the topic as discussed and described by the workshop participants. This report also includes a collection of individually authored papers and commentary.
