Book Does the Gender Wage Gap Influence Intimate Partner Violence in Brazil

Download or read book Does the Gender Wage Gap Influence Intimate Partner Violence in Brazil written by Elizaveta Perova and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving women's economic status has been presented in theory as a protective mechanism against intimate partner violence. Using panel data from 2011-16 for the most populous 20 percent of municipalities in Brazil, the analysis tests if the gender wage gap is causally associated with three administrative measures of violence against women: homicides, overnight hospitalizations for assault, and incidents of domestic violence reported by attending health workers about patients. The analysis finds that a narrowing in the gender wage gap leads to a reduction of homicides of women, especially among younger women and in municipalities with a low Human Development Index. The impact on less severe forms of violence, also captured in medical reports, depends on the context. A reduction in the gender wage ratio triggers a decrease in reports in municipalities that have police stations specifically designed to address crimes against women, but it has the opposite impact in the absence of such services. The results suggest that while improvements in gender equality in the labor market curtail the most severe forms of violence against women, they need to be complemented by policies directly focused on women's safety to reduce less severe violence effectively.

Book Decomposing the Effect of Trade on the Gender Wage Gap

Download or read book Decomposing the Effect of Trade on the Gender Wage Gap written by Felipe Benguria and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper utilizes regional variation in exposure to increased Chinese imports in Brazil to investigate the impact of trade on gender wage inequality. We find that rising imports reduced wages in local Brazilian labor markets, but that this wage reduction was entirely borne by male workers (thus reducing the gender wage gap). Using Oaxaca-Blinder decompositions, we find that this reduction in the wage gap was largely explained by differences in the occupational employment of female and male workers, with trade increasing the female share of workers in higher-paying occupations and increasing the (relative) returns to primarily-female occupations.

Book The Effect of a Change in Legislation on the Wage Gap in Brazil

Download or read book The Effect of a Change in Legislation on the Wage Gap in Brazil written by Jorge Arbache and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article investigates gender wage discrimination based on a natural experiment, namely, the introduction of compulsory open exams applied in Brazil to public service job candidates as a way to prevent clientelism and nepotism. Our hypothesis is that if there is discrimination, so we should observe gender wage gap reduction after the introduction of the open exams. We find evidence in favor of this hypothesis, thus suggesting that there is discrimination against women.

Book Firms and the Decline in Earnings Inequality in Brazil

Download or read book Firms and the Decline in Earnings Inequality in Brazil written by Jorge Alvarez and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We document a large decrease in earnings inequality in Brazil between 1996 and 2012. Using administrative linked employer-employee data, we fit high-dimensional worker and firm fixed effects models to understand the sources of this decrease. Firm effects account for 40 percent of the total decrease and worker effects for 29 percent. Changes in observable worker and firm characteristics contributed little to these trends. Instead, the decrease is primarily due to a compression of returns to these characteristics, particularly a declining firm productivity pay premium. Our results shed light on potential drivers of earnings inequality dynamics.

Book Race and Gender Differentials

Download or read book Race and Gender Differentials written by Paulo R. A. Loureiro and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article investigates the existence of discrimination in the urban and rural labor markets in Brazil. Tests the hypothesis that returns to education are different for black and white workers, male and female, in the urban and rural sectors. The methodology used allows for the decomposition of the difference in the mean earnings of male and female workers in the urban and rural sectors in a share that can be explained by characteristics such as education, hours of work and experience, and in another share that reflects the existence of discrimination. The analysis is carried out with microdata from the National Household Surveys (PNADs) of 1992 and 1998. The choice of the period of analysis was made with the aim of investigating whether changes in the economic environment affect the standard of returns to education. The results suggest the existence of strong discrimination by gender and race, besides the presence of substantial wage differentials between urban and rural workers.
