Book Gender Variations in Delinquency and the Impact of Peer Relationships

Download or read book Gender Variations in Delinquency and the Impact of Peer Relationships written by Taylor Renee Wiggins and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to look at the impact of gender on peer relationships and juvenile delinquency. The research hypothesizes that there is a relationship between negative peers and juvenile delinquency when considering females. In order to test this hypothesis, the research uses di-identified, secondary analysis data of self-reported delinquency.. The study consists of 502 participants who were at-risk or substantiated cases of maltreatment from DCF referrals from 5 areas in the United States. Policy and future research are discussed in the context of study findings.

Book Adolescent Friendship Groups Gender and Delinquency in a Cross National Context

Download or read book Adolescent Friendship Groups Gender and Delinquency in a Cross National Context written by Jonathan Uhl and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most strongly supported findings in criminological research is that there is a relationship between delinquent friends and one's own delinquency. Yet, much of the supportive research for this finding has been conducted in the United States. The main objective of this dissertation is to situate the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship in a cross-national context to observe if and how it varies. Previous research that has examined this relationship cross-nationally often contains small sample sizes, uses ambiguous measures of delinquent peers and delinquency, and/or only uses data from one country (Hartjen and Priyadarsini 2003; Kobayashi and Farrington 2019; Wang and Jensen 2017; Weerman et al. 2015). Therefore, a more generalized estimation, using a uniform survey instrument and sampling strategy across a large number of countries, of the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship has not yet been established. In this project, I use a large data set that contains respondents from 30 countries to provide some insight into the cross-national relationship between delinquent friends and delinquency. Gender is an especially important characteristic related to adolescent friendship groups, delinquent peers, and delinquency. Compared to males, female friendship groups are usually more intimate. Females are less likely than males to have delinquent peers and are less likely to be involved in serious acts of delinquency. While important, most of the findings surrounding gender, adolescent friendship groups, and delinquent peers have also been concentrated in western, particularly, North American, countries. Gender is a societal institution that varies cross-nationally, especially with elements like gender norms and expectations. Therefore, it is possible that gender impacts the relationship between adolescent friendship groups, delinquent peers, and delinquency in distinct ways depending on country context. That said, a secondary objective of this project is to examine how gender impacts adolescent friendship group characteristics and the delinquent peers/delinquency relationship. To meet these objectives, this project draws on sociological and criminological theories and empirical methods. Theoretically, this project is mainly guided by differential association theory, a commonly used theoretical frame in the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship literature. Gender and crime literature and theorizing further informs the secondary goal of this dissertation (Steffensmeier and Allan 1996). Empirically, I address the above objectives using responses from the second wave of the International Self-Reported Delinquency Study (ISRD-2), a self-report survey administered to adolescents aged 12-15 in 30 different countries. I use responses to various questions on friendship group characteristics, delinquent friends, and delinquency. The first part of my analysis is descriptive and examines the relationship between friendship group characteristics, delinquent friends, and delinquency across the data set as a whole. I also examine cross-national and gender variation in adolescent friendship group characteristics, delinquent friends, and delinquency. In the second part my analysis, I use fixed-effects and random intercepts logistic regression models to estimate the effect of delinquent friends and friendship group characteristics on delinquency. These regression models also control for other common predictors of delinquency like parental measures and school performance. I then disaggregate these models by type of delinquency, type of delinquent friends, and gender and note how these changes affect results. Four important sets of findings emerge from my analysis. First, I find a strong significant relationship between delinquent friends and delinquency between and within countries, as well as by type of delinquency and type of delinquent friends. These findings provide some evidence of cross-national generalizability of the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship. Second, I find that when delinquent friends are disaggregated by type, each has a distinct effect on the likelihood of delinquency and these effects are multiplicative. I also find that the type of delinquent friend is somewhat related to the type of delinquency an individual is involved in. Third, while I do not find cross-national variation in the relationship between delinquency, delinquent friends, and adolescent friendship group characteristics, I do find substantial variation in the prevalence of these measures by country. In other words, delinquency and delinquent friends are much more common in some countries than others. Certain features of adolescent friendship groups like whether the friendship group spends a lot of time hanging out in public places and whether the friendship group accepts doing illegal things also vary by country. Fourth, I find that the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship has similar effects by gender. Both males and females are more likely to engage in delinquency if they have delinquent friends. This is true when delinquency and delinquent friends are disaggregated by type. I do however find substantial variation in the prevalence of delinquency, delinquent friends, and adolescent friendship group characteristics by gender. Specifically, adolescent females have lower levels of delinquency and fewer delinquent friends than adolescent males. This dissertation makes several important contributions to criminology and related social science fields. First, very few studies have explored the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship in contexts outside of the U.S. This is a misstep given the substantial confidence criminologists place in the relationship between delinquent friends and delinquency. The studies that have examined this relationship in contexts outside the U.S. often contain small sample sizes and use somewhat ambiguous measures of delinquent friends and delinquency. By using a large sample of adolescents from many countries and using less ambiguous measures of delinquent friends and delinquency, this dissertation provides a partial test of the cross-national generalizability of the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship. Second, gender is an important characteristic to consider in research on the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship. By examining gender differences in the delinquent friends/delinquency relationship using a cross-national data source, I also contribute to research and theorizing on the gender and crime/delinquency relationship and how the effects of gender on common predictors of delinquency do (or do not) vary by country.

Book Social Learning Theory and the Explanation of Crime

Download or read book Social Learning Theory and the Explanation of Crime written by Ronald L. Akers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social learning theory has been called the dominant theory of crime and delinquency in the United States, yet it is often misrepresented. This latest volume in the distinguished Advances in Criminological Theory series explores the impact of this theory. Some equate it with differential association theory. Others depict it as little more than a micro-level appendage to cultural deviance theories. There have been earlier attempts to clarify the theory's unique features in comparison to other theories, and others have applied it to broader issues. These efforts are extended in this volume, which focuses on developing, applying, and testing the theory on a variety of criminal and delinquent behavior. It applies the theory to treatment and prevention, moving social learning into a global context for the twenty-first century. This comprehensive volume includes the latest work, tests, and theoretical advances in social learning theory and will be particularly helpful to criminologists, sociologists, and psychologists. It may also be of interest to those concerned with current issues relating to delinquency, drug use/abuse, and drinking/alcohol abuse.

Book Culture Peers and Delinquency

Download or read book Culture Peers and Delinquency written by Joseph R Ferrari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increase your understanding of the etiology, prevention, and treatment of delinquency! This informative book provides you with specific strategies to assess delinquency and to increase the effectiveness of any prevention program. In addition, it presents a community peer model of delinquency with important implications for delinquency prevention programs and for delinquency research. Examining specific cultural groups in the United States, including Caucasians, East Asians, South-East Asians, Polynesians/Micronesians, and Vietnamese, as well as Japanese youths in their homeland, this model shows how families, schools, and neighborhoods affect the formation of peer groupsand how these groups can facilitate or inhibit delinquency. Culture, Peers, and Delinquency explores the interplay of historical, traditional culture with contemporary youth culture. It also examines the relationship between individual outcome and community disorganization and illustrates how peer relationships are conditioned by gender. The book will increase your understanding of the etiology, prevention, and treatment of delinquency with examples that show treatment alternatives and outcomes, focusing on: intercultural differences in major descriptors of the attitudes and activities of youth the demographics, economics, and history, as well as a fascinating and disturbing cultural analysis of the ever-increasing rate of juvenile delinquency in Japan the influence of peers and culture on Vietnamese youth gangs in Honolulu gender-difference studies of mixed-culture incarcerated adolescentsand what these youths have to say about the detention facility where they go to school a careful analysis of homes, schools, and neighborhoods in terms of their dysfunctions and how they increase the likelihood that their youth will spend time with similar peers and without adult supervision

  • Pages : 405 pages

Download or read book Juvenile Crime Juvenile Justice written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-06-05 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though youth crime rates have fallen since the mid-1990s, public fear and political rhetoric over the issue have heightened. The Columbine shootings and other sensational incidents add to the furor. Often overlooked are the underlying problems of child poverty, social disadvantage, and the pitfalls inherent to adolescent decisionmaking that contribute to youth crime. From a policy standpoint, adolescent offenders are caught in the crossfire between nurturance of youth and punishment of criminals, between rehabilitation and "get tough" pronouncements. In the midst of this emotional debate, the National Research Council's Panel on Juvenile Crime steps forward with an authoritative review of the best available data and analysis. Juvenile Crime, Juvenile Justice presents recommendations for addressing the many aspects of America's youth crime problem. This timely release discusses patterns and trends in crimes by children and adolescentsâ€"trends revealed by arrest data, victim reports, and other sources; youth crime within general crime; and race and sex disparities. The book explores desistanceâ€"the probability that delinquency or criminal activities decrease with ageâ€"and evaluates different approaches to predicting future crime rates. Why do young people turn to delinquency? Juvenile Crime, Juvenile Justice presents what we know and what we urgently need to find out about contributing factors, ranging from prenatal care, differences in temperament, and family influences to the role of peer relationships, the impact of the school policies toward delinquency, and the broader influences of the neighborhood and community. Equally important, this book examines a range of solutions: Prevention and intervention efforts directed to individuals, peer groups, and families, as well as day care-, school- and community-based initiatives. Intervention within the juvenile justice system. Role of the police. Processing and detention of youth offenders. Transferring youths to the adult judicial system. Residential placement of juveniles. The book includes background on the American juvenile court system, useful comparisons with the juvenile justice systems of other nations, and other important information for assessing this problem.

Book Gender and Crime

Download or read book Gender and Crime written by Sandra L. Browning and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-23 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes stock of contemporary perspectives on gender and crime. In 1975, Freda Adler published her pathbreaking book, Sisters in Crime: The Rise of the New Female Criminal. She made the bold claim that changes in American society—including changing attitudes and opportunities—would allow for greater participation of women in criminal enterprises. Beyond her substantive thesis, which turned out to be partially accurate, Adler opened up a vibrant new area within criminology: the study of gender and crime. Now nearly a half‐century later, the field of criminology is replete with women scholars who are making plentiful and important contributions. As a result, this volume explores cutting‐edge issues. Part I starts by laying out a theoretical foundation, focusing on the origins of theories of female criminality, and then providing an overview of more contemporary perspectives. Part II explores the role of race in shaping women’s criminality, drawing on the novel approaches of “Black Criminology” and the study of intersectionality. Part III gives attention to issues that heretofore were male‐centric, illuminating female desistance from crime, the effects of peer groups, and gender differences in attitudes toward criminal justice policies. Finally, Part IV considers the explanation of three important realms of criminality—risky lifestyles, white‐collar crime, and terrorism. This volume will be of interest to a wide range of criminologists and is an ideal choice for use in graduate seminars and upper‐level undergraduate courses.

Book Gender Differences in Peer Influence and Friend Selection for Adolescent Delinquency Drinking and Smoking

Download or read book Gender Differences in Peer Influence and Friend Selection for Adolescent Delinquency Drinking and Smoking written by Cassandra Mcmillan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research has confirmed that friend selection and peer influence concurrently explain why adolescents tend to exhibit similar problem behaviors as their friends. However, substantially less work has considered whether gender moderates these relationships. In this study, I examine whether the selection and influence processes regarding three specific problem behaviors (delinquency, drinking alcohol, and smoking tobacco) operate differently for adolescent girls and boys. I consider whether girls or boys are more likely to select friends with similar problem behaviors as their own and whether one gender is more prone to influence from their friends participation in such behaviors. Using SIENA software, I construct dynamic stochastic actor-based (SAB) models that are ideal for disentangling whether friends behavior similarity is the result of selection or influence processes. I apply these models to five waves of respondent-nominated friendship data on students who participated in the PROSPER peers study, yielding a sample of over 13,000 adolescents who attended sixth through ninth grade in one of 26 U.S. school districts. The sample includes respondents from two consecutive grade cohorts, resulting in 51 complete friendship networks. Findings suggest that the problem behavior of both girls and boys can be explained by friend selection and peer influence; however, for certain problem behaviors, girls experiences are particularly shaped by these processes. Compared to boys, the delinquent behavior of girls is more susceptible to influence from their friends and girls are more likely to select friends who have similar smoking behaviors as their own.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Gender Sex and Crime

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Gender Sex and Crime written by Rosemary Gartner and published by Oxford Handbooks. This book was released on 2014 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors, Rosemary Gartner and Bill McCarthy, have assembled a diverse cast of criminologists, historians, legal scholars, psychologists, and sociologists from a number of countries to discuss key concepts and debates central to the field. The Handbook includes examinations of the historical and contemporary patterns of women's and men's involvement in crime; as well as biological, psychological, and social science perspectives on gender, sex, and criminal activity. Several essays discuss the ways in which sex and gender influence legal and popular reactions to crime. An important theme throughout The Handbook is the intersection of sex and gender with ethnicity, class, age, peer groups, and community as influences on crime and justice. Individual chapters investigate both conventional topics - such as domestic abuse and sexual violence - and topics that have only recently drawn the attention of scholars - such as human trafficking, honor killing, gender violence during war, state rape, and genocide.

Book The Handbook of Race Ethnicity Crime and Justice

Download or read book The Handbook of Race Ethnicity Crime and Justice written by Ramiro Martinez, Jr. and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook presents current and future studies on the changing dynamics of the role of immigrants and the impact of immigration, across the United States and industrialized and developing nations. It covers the changing dynamics of race, ethnicity, and immigration, and discusses how it all contributes to variations in crime, policing, and the overall justice system. Through acknowledging that some groups, especially people of color, are disproportionately influenced more than others in the case of criminal justice reactions, the “War on Drugs”, and hate crimes; this Handbook introduces the importance of studying race and crime so as to better understand it. It does so by recommending that researchers concentrate on ethnic diversity in a national and international context in order to broaden their demographic and expand their understanding of how to attain global change. Featuring contributions from top experts in the field, The Handbook of Race and Crime is presented in five sections—An Overview of Race, Ethnicity, Crime, and Justice; Theoretical Perspectives on Race and Crime; Race, Gender, and the Justice System; Gender and Crime; and Race, Gender and Comparative Criminology. Each section of the book addresses a key area of research, summarizes findings or shortcomings whenever possible, and provides new results relevant to race/crime and justice. Every contribution is written by a top expert in the field and based on the latest research. With a sharp focus on contemporary race, ethnicity, crime, and justice studies, The Handbook of Race and Crime is the ideal reference for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students, and scholars interested in the disciplines such as Criminology, Race and Ethnicity, Race and the Justice System, and the Sociology of Race.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescence is a distinct, yet transient, period of development between childhood and adulthood characterized by increased experimentation and risk-taking, a tendency to discount long-term consequences, and heightened sensitivity to peers and other social influences. A key function of adolescence is developing an integrated sense of self, including individualization, separation from parents, and personal identity. Experimentation and novelty-seeking behavior, such as alcohol and drug use, unsafe sex, and reckless driving, are thought to serve a number of adaptive functions despite their risks. Research indicates that for most youth, the period of risky experimentation does not extend beyond adolescence, ceasing as identity becomes settled with maturity. Much adolescent involvement in criminal activity is part of the normal developmental process of identity formation and most adolescents will mature out of these tendencies. Evidence of significant changes in brain structure and function during adolescence strongly suggests that these cognitive tendencies characteristic of adolescents are associated with biological immaturity of the brain and with an imbalance among developing brain systems. This imbalance model implies dual systems: one involved in cognitive and behavioral control and one involved in socio-emotional processes. Accordingly adolescents lack mature capacity for self-regulations because the brain system that influences pleasure-seeking and emotional reactivity develops more rapidly than the brain system that supports self-control. This knowledge of adolescent development has underscored important differences between adults and adolescents with direct bearing on the design and operation of the justice system, raising doubts about the core assumptions driving the criminalization of juvenile justice policy in the late decades of the 20th century. It was in this context that the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) asked the National Research Council to convene a committee to conduct a study of juvenile justice reform. The goal of Reforming Juvenile Justice: A Developmental Approach was to review recent advances in behavioral and neuroscience research and draw out the implications of this knowledge for juvenile justice reform, to assess the new generation of reform activities occurring in the United States, and to assess the performance of OJJDP in carrying out its statutory mission as well as its potential role in supporting scientifically based reform efforts.

Book excerpt: Studies investigating the etiology of delinquent involvement have pointed to two influential theories: Differential Association Theory and Social Control Theory. Both theories suggest that bonding can impact delinquent behavior. Strong friend relationships influence delinquent involvement while strong parental relationships serve as a positive influence in the curtailment of adolescent delinquency. Indeed, a great deal of research has shown that both friends and families are an integral part of adolescent delinquent involvement. Although these theories provide us with a framework for understanding adolescent delinquency, the contextual nuances of the connections among friend relationships, parental relationships, and delinquency are still unclear. In this project, I investigate the gender and race/ethnicity of the respondent as well as the predominant race/ethnicity and gender of the respondents' friendship networks to better understand how both friend and parent-child relationships affect adolescent delinquency. I utilize data from the Toledo Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS). Results suggest that both friend relationships and parental relationships impact respondent delinquency; however, such effects differ by the gender and race/ethnicity of the respondent. Furthermore, the predominant race/ethnicity and predominant gender of the respondents' friendship network appear to effect delinquent involvement for some groups and not others. The exploration of this topic provides a much-needed look into some understudied areas in human behavior. The long-standing tradition of investigating the role of peers in criminal offending has certainly examined the importance of family and the dynamics of friendships. However, few studies have incorporated both gender and race/ethnicity in their investigations into the relationship between friendships and delinquency. In addition, this study is unique in that it examines friendship network characteristics and how they relate to delinquency. Furthermore, this project explores how family and friend influences on delinquent behavior vary across different groups. Neither of these aspects have been adequately explored in past research. It is the purpose of this study to being to fill this gap in the literature and highlight how both gender and race/ethnicity influence involvement in delinquency.
